Weeks later, you’re still crying in the car after drop-off, still catching yourself mid-sentence about to call someone who isn’t there anymore, and somewhere in the back of your mind is a quiet, ugly little voice asking: shouldn’t you be over this by now? Shouldn’t a person who trusts God be handling this better?

If you’ve ever wondered what does the Bible say about grief — whether faith is supposed to make loss hurt less — there’s one moment in the Gospel of John that answers it more honestly than almost anything else in Scripture.

The Moment Jesus Grieved a Death He Was About to Undo

In John 11, Jesus gets word that his close friend Lazarus is dying. He doesn’t rush to Bethany. He waits two extra days — and then tells his disciples plainly why: “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep” (John 11:11). Jesus isn’t confused about what’s about to happen. He already knows Lazarus’s death isn’t the end of the story. He’s walking toward that tomb with the ending already written.

By the time he arrives, Lazarus has been dead four days. Mary meets him in tears, and the crowd around her is weeping too. And here’s the part that gets skipped past most often: Jesus doesn’t respond with a pep talk about resurrection being minutes away. John says he was “troubled” and “groaned in the spirit” (John 11:33). Then come two words that stand alone as the shortest verse in the entire Bible: “Jesus wept” (John 11:35).

He weeps at a grave he is about to empty. Not because he doubts what’s coming. Not because he’s forgotten the plan. He weeps because the loss in front of him is real, right now, regardless of what he already knows is coming next.

Grieving Isn’t the Opposite of Trusting God

This matters because of a verse a lot of grieving Christians have had weaponized against them without anyone meaning to. Paul writes, “I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Read quickly, that sounds like an instruction not to grieve. Read carefully, it isn’t that at all — Paul isn’t telling believers to skip sorrow. He’s telling them not to grieve the way people grieve who have nothing beyond this life to hold onto. The sorrow itself was never the problem. Hopeless sorrow is.

If the deeper question underneath your grief is why God allowed the loss in the first place, Job’s story addresses that directly — and lands somewhere most people don’t expect.

Even the tears themselves aren’t treated as a lapse in faith anywhere in Scripture. The psalmist writes to God directly: “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” (Psalm 56:8) — picturing something ancient mourners actually did, collecting tears in small clay bottles as a physical record of grief too significant to just let evaporate. If lament as an act of worship, not weakness, is a new idea, the Psalms of lament go even deeper into this. God’s own picture of himself isn’t one who’s counting how long your grief is taking. It’s one who’s keeping track of every tear, on purpose, because none of them were wasted.

The Reframe: Your Tears Are Evidence You Loved, Not Evidence You Doubt

Here’s what changes once you actually sit with John 11: the most faith-filled person who ever lived stood at a grave with the resurrection already in his hands — and still let himself feel the loss in full. He didn’t grieve less because he had more faith. If anything, he modeled that grief and hope were never meant to cancel each other out. They’re meant to sit in the same room.

So if you’re still finding yourself blindsided by grief months after everyone else has stopped asking how you’re doing, that’s not a faith problem. That’s not you failing to “trust the plan” enough. Grief on a schedule was never the biblical model. Grief witnessed by God, carried with hope woven through it, is.

What Does the Bible Say About Grief, Really?

Put simply: the Bible never asks grieving people to grieve less, or faster, or quieter. It shows God’s own Son weeping at a grave he was seconds from reversing. It shows a psalmist trusting that his tears were valuable enough for God to bottle and record. And it draws one real distinction — not grief versus no grief, but grief with hope woven through it versus grief with nothing underneath it at all. If your grief is specifically the loss of a pregnancy or a baby, Jeremiah 31 names that exact grief directly by name — you’re not the first person Scripture has met in that particular loss.

Three Ways to Sit With This Today

Write down one specific memory. A phrase they used, a smell, a Tuesday that meant nothing at the time. Don’t turn it into a lesson. Just let it be a memory — the way Jesus let himself feel Lazarus’s death before he did anything about it. (About 5 minutes.)

Send one text to someone else who misses this person too. Just: “Still thinking about them today.” No follow-up needed. (About 2 minutes.)

If you’ve been carrying guilt about how long you’ve grieved, write down where that timeline came from — a comment someone made, a number you assumed, an expectation nobody actually wrote down — and ask honestly whether it holds up against John 11. (About 10 minutes.)

God, I don’t know how to explain this ache to people who think I should be past it by now. Some days I forget and then remember all over again, and it knocks the wind out of me the same way it did the first time. I don’t think you’re disappointed in these tears — I think you’re the one who’s been collecting them. Help me believe that grieving this deeply doesn’t mean I trust you any less. Sit with me in this, the way you sat with Mary before you did anything else. Amen.

A Question Worth Sitting With

Do you think churches today make more room for grief that lingers past the funeral, or is there still an unspoken timeline people feel pressured to meet? Share your take in the comments.

I used to think still grieving months later meant something was wrong with my faith. Then I actually read John 11 — Jesus wept at a grave he was about to empty. Grief and faith were never opposites.

“Jesus wept.” Two words. The shortest verse in the Bible. And maybe the most honest permission to grieve you’ll ever get.

Turns out God isn’t timing how long my grief is taking. He’s collecting the tears. Psalm 56:8 changed how I think about this whole season.

Questions and Answers

What does the Bible say about grief?
The Bible never treats grief as a lack of faith. In John 11, Jesus himself weeps at Lazarus’s tomb even though he already knows he’s about to raise him from the dead — showing that real loss deserves real grief, regardless of what you know is coming next.

Is it wrong for a Christian to grieve for a long time?
No. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 doesn’t tell believers not to grieve — it says not to grieve “as others which have no hope.” The instruction is about the presence of hope inside the grief, not a deadline on the grief itself.

What is the shortest verse in the Bible, and why does it matter?
“Jesus wept” (John 11:35) is the shortest verse in the Bible. It matters because Jesus said it at a grave he was seconds away from reversing — proof that grief and certainty about God’s plan aren’t mutually exclusive.

Does the Bible say God notices our tears?
Yes. Psalm 56:8 says God keeps a record of every tear — “put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” — a picture of grief being witnessed and valued by God, not overlooked.

How can I apply what the Bible says about grief to my own life today?
Start small: write down one honest memory without turning it into a lesson, tell someone else who misses the same person that you’re still thinking about them, or examine where any pressure to “be over it” by now is actually coming from.
        <div
