The statement from her family called it “unexpected.” Within hours, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was trending again, the way it does every few years \u2014 a solar eclipse, a viral cover, a movie needle-drop, a death. Most people who know every word of that chorus couldn’t tell you what the song is actually about. Neither could most people who wrote about Tyler this week. Jim Steinman \u2014 the songwriter behind Tyler’s hit and much of Meat Loaf’s catalog \u2014 wrote “Total Eclipse of the Heart” for a musical he was developing based on Nosferatu<\/em>, the 1922 vampire film. The working title was “Vampires in Love.” That musical never got made. The song survived, got reworked for Tyler, and became one of the best-selling singles of all time \u2014 while quietly keeping its original DNA.<\/p>\n

Steinman apparently believed that too, whether he meant to or not. He wrote a love song about darkness for a vampire that never got made, handed it to a Welsh singer with a voice roughened by throat surgery, and it became the sound of exactly that moment \u2014 the turning, not the falling.<\/p>\n

Bonnie Tyler’s own voice is part of why the song works. Vocal cord surgery in the 1970s left her with the rasp that made “Total Eclipse of the Heart” sound less like a pop confection and more like someone who had actually been in the dark and knew what she was singing about.
