Maybe it’s the call you’ve been putting off — the doctor, the ex, the boss. Maybe it’s the email that says the numbers didn’t work out this month. Whatever is waiting for you today, some part of you is standing at the edge of it thinking the same thing: I don’t feel strong enough for this.

If you’ve searched for Bible verses about strength, you’ve probably landed on the usual ones — Philippians 4:13, Isaiah 40:31. They’re true, and they’re beautiful. But there’s an older verse, spoken to a man about to lead two million grieving, terrified people into a land full of armies, that says something the popular verses skip past entirely. And it starts with one Hebrew word most translations flatten into a single English phrase: be strong.

The command God repeated four times in one chapter

Moses had just died. Joshua — his assistant, not a king, not a prophet, just the man who used to carry Moses’s tent gear — was suddenly responsible for an entire nation standing on the edge of the Jordan River, staring at a land full of walled cities. In the space of eighteen verses, God tells him the same thing four separate times:

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9, KJV)

That’s not a throwaway pep talk. God says some version of “be strong” in verse 6, verse 7, and verse 9 — and the people echo it back to Joshua in verse 18. Whatever this word means, it was the one thing Joshua needed to hear four times before he’d believe it.

What “chazaq” actually means — and it isn’t a feeling

The Hebrew word behind “be strong” here is chazaq (חָזַק). In English, we hear “be strong” and picture an emotional state — confidence, courage, gritting your teeth. But chazaq shows up all over the Old Testament doing something much more physical. In 2 Chronicles 24:13, it’s the word used for workmen who repaired the temple — they didn’t feel their way through it, they grabbed the broken stones and fastened them back into place. In Nehemiah 3, it’s used more than thirty times for men and women physically repairing sections of Jerusalem’s broken wall, stone by stone, hand over hand.

Chazaq means to seize. To grasp firmly. To fasten something loose back into place. When God tells Joshua “chazaq” — be strong — He isn’t asking Joshua to summon a feeling he doesn’t have. He’s telling him to grab hold of something, the same physical motion you’d use to grip a tool, tighten a strap, or fasten a stone back into a crumbling wall.

The strength was never something you had to manufacture first

This is the part that changes how you read the verse. Every time God tells Joshua to chazaq, He immediately says why: “for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” The command isn’t work up enough courage to go. It’s take hold of the One who’s already going with you. The strength was never a feeling Joshua had to produce on his own before he could move. It was a Person he had to grip — the way you’d grip a hand held out to you, not the way you’d talk yourself into confidence in a mirror.

That reorders something most of us have backward. We wait to feel strong enough before we make the call, send the email, walk into the appointment. But chazaq works the other direction: you take hold first — hands shaking or not — and the strength shows up in the gripping, not before it.

What this looks like on an ordinary Tuesday

You don’t need a wall to repair or a nation to lead to use this. The next hard thing on your list today — the conversation, the decision, the appointment — doesn’t require you to feel ready first. It requires you to reach for it the way Joshua reached for the promise in front of him: uncertain, and moving anyway, because the strength was never sitting inside you waiting to be found. It was always something — Someone — you take hold of.

Three ways to practice this today

Write the verse where you’ll see it before the hardest part of your day. A sticky note on the bathroom mirror, the dashboard, your work monitor — “for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Let it be the last thing you read before the hard thing.

Do the next physical task in front of you before you feel ready. The load of laundry, the budget spreadsheet, the doctor’s-appointment call — start the motion. Chazaq is a verb, not a mood. Let the resolve catch up to your hands.

Reach out to the one person you’ve been avoiding out of fear. Send the text or make the call today, before you feel confident enough to. That’s what taking hold looks like when it’s not a metaphor.

Related: if this is landing because you’re running on empty in a more specific way, Bible Verses About Healing: What Rapha Really Means walks through the Hebrew word behind healing the same way. My hands are shaking a little just thinking about it. I don’t need You to make me feel brave before I move — I just need to know You’re actually going with me, the way You went with Joshua. It’s used elsewhere in the Old Testament for physically repairing walls and buildings, not just for an emotional state.

Why does God tell Joshua to “be strong” so many times?
Joshua had just inherited leadership of Israel after Moses died, facing a hostile, walled land. God repeats the command in Joshua 1:6, 1:7, and 1:9, and the people repeat it back to him in 1:18 — because it’s the thing he needed to actually take hold of, not just hear once.

Is biblical strength the same as confidence?
Not exactly. Chazaq describes an action — grasping, fastening, taking hold — more than an emotional state like confidence. The strength in Joshua 1:9 comes from God’s presence, not from Joshua feeling capable on his own.

What’s a short prayer for strength?
A simple prayer: “God, I don’t feel ready, but I know You’re going with me.
