What they found was a vast filament of gas, cooled and threading its way inward, funneling material into a spinning disk about 800 light-years wide. Inside that disk, gas races around the black hole at speeds up to 600 kilometers per second.<\/p>\n

The black hole’s own jets heat some of the surrounding gas and fling it outward — but instead of that gas escaping for good, it eventually cools, condenses into thin filaments, and drifts right back down toward the center.
