Someone said it to you at the worst possible moment.<\/p>\n

Maybe at a graveside. Maybe in a hospital waiting room. Maybe over the phone when you were barely holding it together and you needed someone to just sit with you in the hard of it.<\/p>\n

“All things work together for good.”<\/em><\/p>\n

You heard Romans 8:28. And something in you either reached for it like a lifeline \u2014 or quietly pulled back.<\/p>\n

Because there’s a version of this verse that doesn’t quite land. The version where bad things are secretly fine because they’ll eventually produce something better. The version where pain is a detour God is rerouting around. The version that feels like it’s asking you to sign a theological permission slip before you’re allowed to feel what you’re actually feeling.<\/p>\n

That’s not what Paul wrote.<\/p>\n

And if you go back to the Greek \u2014 the actual word Paul used \u2014 the verse becomes something entirely different. Something harder. And something that holds more weight.<\/p>\n

The Verse Everyone Knows<\/h2>\n

Romans 8:28 \u2014 here’s how most translations render it:<\/p>\n

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. You’ll find it on cross-stitch patterns, greeting cards, memorial posts, and Pinterest boards. And those aren’t wrong \u2014 the verse is real comfort. It has steadied people in genuinely terrible situations.<\/p>\n

But there’s a Greek word sitting at the center of this verse that most people never examine. And when you actually look at it, the verse stops being a promise about outcomes \u2014 and starts being a promise about presence.<\/p>\n

The word is synergeo<\/strong> (\u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u03b5\u1fd6).<\/p>\n

What Synergeo Actually Means<\/h2>\n

You already know the root. We use it in English.<\/p>\n

Synergy.<\/em> When two forces combine to produce something neither could have produced alone.<\/p>\n

Syn<\/em> \u2014 together. Ergon<\/em> \u2014 work, activity, effort.<\/p>\n

Synergeo doesn’t mean things get rearranged<\/em>. It doesn’t mean time heals<\/em>. It doesn’t mean fate has a plan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It means: active, ongoing cooperation to produce a result.<\/strong> It’s a verb. Present tense. The chemistry is happening now.<\/p>\n

Paul uses a form of this word in 1 Corinthians 16:16 to describe co-workers \u2014 people actively collaborating. It appears in contexts where the Lord is described as working with<\/em> the disciples \u2014 present in the doing, not watching from a distance.<\/p>\n

This is always an active word. Always a partnership between an agent and a material.<\/p>\n

In Romans 8:28, God is the agent. The all things<\/em> \u2014 panta<\/em> in the Greek \u2014 are the material.<\/p>\n

What “All Things” Actually Includes<\/h2>\n

Look at what Paul has been writing in the chapters leading to verse 28.<\/p>\n

By Romans 8:17, he has already said that believers are “co-heirs with Christ \u2014 if indeed we share in his sufferings.” Not when we avoid<\/em> suffering. When we share in it.<\/em><\/p>\n

By Romans 8:18, he writes: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” Present sufferings. He’s writing about real, current, unresolved suffering \u2014 not the past kind that’s already been redeemed.<\/p>\n

Then Romans 8:26: “We do not know what we ought to pray for.” Paul is describing the experience of being in the middle of something so hard you don’t even know how to ask God for help. You open your mouth and nothing comes out. (If that’s ever been you, this might help<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

And then<\/em> \u2014 in that context \u2014 Romans 8:28.<\/p>\n

Panta<\/em> \u2014 all things \u2014 does not mean good things<\/em> or things that will eventually make sense<\/em>. In the Greek, panta means all things. The broken things. The things that shouldn’t have happened. The things with no visible path to redemption.<\/p>\n

Paul is not saying those things are good.<\/p>\n

He is saying God is synergizing them.<\/p>\n

God Is Not Waiting for Better Materials<\/h2>\n

Most of us read Romans 8:28 as a promise about the future. Eventually this will make sense. Eventually this will be part of something good.<\/em><\/p>\n

That’s not wrong. But synergeo is a present-tense word. Paul isn’t saying God will work<\/em> everything together. He’s saying God is working<\/em> \u2014 actively, right now \u2014 in what you’re currently carrying.<\/p>\n

A chemist doesn’t sort through the lab looking for only the beautiful materials. A chemist works with what’s there. And the specific conditions of a reaction \u2014 including the ones that look like failure, the ones that produce heat, the ones that require pressure \u2014 are often exactly what makes the compound possible.<\/p>\n

Paul knew this not as theory. He wrote from lived experience. He had been beaten, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and betrayed by people he trusted. In 2 Corinthians 12, he described a persistent suffering \u2014 a “thorn in the flesh” \u2014 that God had not removed despite multiple prayers. Interestingly, recent neuroscience has found a striking parallel<\/a> to what Paul wrote about breaking being part of building \u2014 the biology of it matches his theology.<\/p>\n

Paul was not writing Romans 8:28 from a comfortable chair after everything worked out.<\/p>\n

He was writing it from inside the chemistry.<\/p>\n

What This Verse Is Not Saying<\/h2>\n

This matters enough to say clearly.<\/p>\n

Romans 8:28 is not saying your pain is secretly fine.<\/p>\n

It is not saying you should feel better about loss because it’s part of a plan.<\/p>\n

It is not saying the bad thing shouldn’t have happened.<\/p>\n

Paul doesn’t explain why<\/em> the bad things happen. He doesn’t give you a theology of suffering that makes the grief disappear. He doesn’t tell you when the chemistry will produce results.<\/p>\n

He says: there is an agent at work. And that agent is not fate. Not time. Not your effort to make meaning.<\/p>\n

God.<\/p>\n

The subject of synergeo is God. God is the one doing the active work \u2014 taking up what’s broken, what’s painful, what shouldn’t have happened \u2014 into a chemistry that produces something the beautiful materials alone could never have made.<\/p>\n

That’s the promise. Not that everything is okay. That God is not absent from what is not okay.<\/p>\n

The Word Changes How You Read the Verse<\/h2>\n

There’s something worth sitting with here.<\/p>\n

Synergeo implies collaboration. A compound reaction. It takes at least two things.<\/p>\n

Paul’s word says God is working with<\/em> your suffering \u2014 not around<\/em> it, not despite<\/em> it. With it. The painful thing is not waiting in the hallway while God works in another room. The painful thing is inside the chemistry.<\/p>\n

Which means the suffering you’ve been carrying \u2014 the loss that doesn’t make sense, the door that didn’t open, the prayer that seemed to disappear \u2014 is already in the room where the work is happening.<\/p>\n

Not waiting to be included.<\/p>\n

Already included.<\/p>\n

Paul didn’t write the verse as comfort for people whose suffering was resolved. He wrote it for people who were still in it. And his word for what God was doing was a present-tense active verb.<\/p>\n

God is synergizing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Not past tense. Not future tense.<\/p>\n

Right now.<\/p>\n

Actions to Take<\/h2>\n

Read Romans 8:18\u201328 in one sitting.<\/strong> Start at verse 18, not verse 28. Let the verse land in the context Paul actually wrote \u2014 inside the suffering chapters, not after them. Notice how the promise reads differently when you’ve been in the hard before it arrives.<\/p>\n

Name what’s actually in the room.<\/strong> In a journal, or quietly in your mind: write down the real thing you’re carrying. Not a softened version. Paul’s word says God is working with the actual material \u2014 not a cleaned-up version of it. Naming it is the first move.<\/p>\n

Watch for the verb, not the result.<\/strong> Instead of scanning for evidence that things are “working out,” try a different question: where is God present in this right now?<\/em> Synergeo is a process word. The chemistry question is different from the outcome question.<\/p>\n

Journaling Prompts<\/h2>\n

What’s one thing you’ve been carrying that you’ve never fully named out loud \u2014 even to yourself? What would it feel like to bring the real version of it into a conversation with God, instead of the edited one?<\/em><\/p>\n

Think about a moment in your life when something difficult eventually became part of something meaningful. Looking back \u2014 where was God in the process, not just in the outcome?<\/em><\/p>\n

If synergeo is true and God is actively working with your current circumstances right now, what would you want to say to God about what He’s working with?<\/em><\/p>\n

A Prayer<\/h2>\n

Lord, I’m not always sure what to do with Romans 8:28. Sometimes it helps, and sometimes it feels like a verse people quote when they don’t have anything else to say. So I’m coming to you with what’s actually in the room \u2014 not the version I’ve already made peace with, but the real thing. The part that still hurts. The part that still doesn’t make sense. And I’m asking you to do what Paul said you do \u2014 to be present in it, to be working in it, not waiting for me to figure it out first. I’m trusting the verb. Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n
