This imaginary version of you is fantastic. They read challenging books, spend deeply present evenings with their partner, work on fulfilling creative projects, and never hit the snooze button.

Then there is the real you. The one who comes home exhausted, orders takeout, doom-scrolls for two hours, and falls asleep to a true-crime documentary.

If you are anything like me, the gap between these two realities isn’t just frustrating—it’s exhausting. You know what you want to value. You say you value your relationships, your health, your personal growth. But when you look at how your days actually unfold, your actions tell a completely different story. It’s easy to beat yourself up over this. We label ourselves as lazy, undisciplined, or unmotivated. We assume that because we aren’t acting on our supposed values, there is something fundamentally broken in our internal wiring.

But the problem isn’t a lack of discipline. The problem is a massive misunderstanding of how human affection actually works.

We have bought into a myth about passion and motivation. We believe that caring deeply about something causes us to invest in it. We think that if we can just manufacture enough desire, the right actions will naturally follow. You wait to feel deeply in love to start planning romantic dates. You wait to feel inspired to sit down at the keyboard. You wait to feel passionate about your health before you go to the gym.

We treat our hearts like compasses that we just have to follow. But your heart isn’t a compass. It’s a trailing indicator. It doesn’t lead; it follows.

The hard truth is that you don’t invest your time and energy into things because you care about them. You care about them because you have invested your time and energy into them.

A friend once put it this way: "Your affections will always follow your investments. Wherever you place your most valuable resources, your emotional attachment will naturally migrate." He told me he first encountered the idea in Matthew 6:21 — but the concept doesn’t require a religious framework to be true. It’s just quietly profound wisdom that happens to have ancient roots.

Think about the last time you bought a new car, or even just an expensive piece of clothing. Suddenly, you cared immensely about where you parked, how close the grocery carts were, or how it was washed. You didn’t inherently care about that specific metal box or fabric a week ago. But because you put your money and time into it, your emotional attachment instantly locked on.

The same mechanism governs the rest of your life. If you spend three hours a day scrolling through a social media feed, your mind will naturally care about the manufactured drama and fleeting dopamine of that platform. Not because it matters, but because you funded it with your attention.

If you want to change what you care about, you have to change what you fund. Here is how you can start shifting your investments to close the gap between the life you have and the life you want.

Audit your actual bank statements and screen time. You cannot change your trajectory until you are brutally honest about where your resources are currently going. Pull out your phone right now and look at your screen time report. Open your banking app and look at the last thirty days of spending. These numbers do not lie, and they do not care about your intentions. They are a perfectly accurate map of what you currently value. If you want to know why you feel disconnected from your family, your goals, or your own peace of mind, this audit will usually give you the exact reason. You are likely funding your own distraction.

Force the initial investment before the feeling arrives. Stop waiting for inspiration to strike before you act. If you want to care more about your relationship, book a weekend away and pay for it now, or block out two hours on a Tuesday night where your phone is locked in another room. If you want to care about a creative pursuit, invest in the tools or carve out thirty minutes every morning where nothing else is allowed to happen. You have to lead with your resources. Give your time, your money, and your undivided attention to the things you want to value, and trust that your feelings will eventually catch the train.

Starve the things you want to stop caring about. Just as investments create attachment, withdrawal creates detachment. This is going to be incredibly uncomfortable at first. When you delete the app, cancel the subscription, or stop engaging in the toxic gossip at work, you will feel a phantom limb syndrome. Your brain will scream for the familiar investment. Let it scream. By pulling your resources away from the things that drain you, you are actively cutting off the lifeblood of those negative attachments. Without your ongoing investment, those desires will eventually wither and fade.

Embrace the emotional lag time. This is where most people quit. When you start investing in a new area of your life, your emotions will not align immediately. You will sit down to read instead of watching television, and you will feel bored. You will take a walk with your partner without your phones, and the conversation might feel forced. Do not panic, and do not retreat to your old habits. The mind takes time to realize that the resource allocation has changed. The feeling of friction isn’t a sign that you are doing the wrong thing; it is the feeling of your internal attachments slowly being uprooted and replanted.

You are building the architecture of your own desires every single day. Every minute of attention, every dollar spent, and every ounce of energy given is a brick laid in the foundation of who you will become tomorrow.

You don’t have to be a victim of your own apathy. You have the power to decide what you care about, simply by choosing where you place your treasure today. Look at your calendar for the next twenty-four hours. Where are you placing your investments, and is that the direction you actually want your life to go?

What is one area of your life where your investments (time, money, or attention) completely contradict what you actually want to care about? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

If positive Biblical wisdom matters to you, I’d love your support of the mission

Q&A about Matthew 6:21

Q: How can I actually figure out what my "treasure" is according to Matthew 6:21?
A: To identify your treasure, you simply need to look honestly at where you consistently spend your time, energy, and finances. The apostle Paul urges believers in Colossians 3:2 to set their minds on things above rather than on earthly things, which means your daily habits and recurring thoughts reveal your true priorities. You can practically assess your spiritual health today by reviewing your bank statement and calendar to see if they reflect a life primarily invested in yourself or in God’s kingdom.

Q: Does Matthew 6:21 mean it’s a sin for me to have a savings account or want nice things?
A: Having money or enjoying nice things is not inherently sinful, but allowing those things to become your primary source of security and joy is where the spiritual danger lies. Paul clarifies this distinction when he warns in 1 Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, showing that the issue is our affection, not the currency itself. You can faithfully manage a savings account and enjoy God’s blessings as long as you hold earthly wealth loosely, practice regular generosity, and keep Christ as your ultimate safety net.

Q: If my heart is too focused on worldly things right now, how do I shift my treasure back to God?
A: If you find yourself overly attached to earthly success or material goods, the most practical way to realign your heart is to start actively giving your resources away. Jesus illustrated this principle when He told the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:21 to sell his possessions and give to the poor in order to have treasure in heaven, demonstrating that radical generosity breaks the grip of materialism. By intentionally choosing to tithe, volunteer, and financially support your local church or those in need, you deliberately retrain your heart to care about eternal things.

Q: Why does Jesus say my heart follows my treasure instead of my treasure following my heart?
A: We usually assume that we only spend money on the things we already love, but Jesus is revealing the profound truth that our active investments actually create and shape our future affections. As Christ explains just a few verses later in Matthew 6:24 when He warns that no one can serve both God and money, our loyalties are continually forged by where we place our trust and our tangible resources. If you want to cultivate a deeper, more passionate love for God, start investing your finances and free time into His kingdom, and your feelings of devotion will inevitably catch up to your investment.

                <div
