You’re checking all the right boxes. You’re paying your bills, showing up to work, keeping the house somewhat tidy, and trying to stay on top of the laundry. On paper, you are doing fine. But just beneath the surface, there’s this nagging, low-grade exhaustion. It’s a quiet voice whispering, Is this all there is? You aren’t necessarily in crisis. You’re just feeling completely stagnant. You feel unfruitful, like a car spinning its tires in the mud, burning energy but going absolutely nowhere.

When we hit this wall, our modern culture’s default prescription is usually a heavy dose of self-focus. We are told to look inward. We buy expensive journals to track our moods, we take personality quizzes to find our "true passion," or we book a spa day hoping a deep-tissue massage will somehow knead the existential dread out of our shoulders. While taking care of yourself is genuinely important, it rarely cures the deeper ache of stagnation. Why? Because the root of that empty feeling isn’t a lack of pampering or a missing grand passion. The root is disconnection. We spend so much time hyper-focused on our own internal weather—our own stress, our own goals, our own comfort—that our worlds shrink. And when your world is only as big as your own problems, it eventually feels suffocating.

The way out of a rut isn’t to look deeper inside yourself. The way out is to look around. A friend once put it to me this way: "If you want to feel like your life has fruit, you have to plant yourself in someone else’s garden for a little while." She told me she first encountered the idea in Titus 3:14—but the concept doesn’t require a religious framework to be true. It’s just quietly profound wisdom that happens to have ancient roots: when we learn to devote ourselves to doing good, specifically by helping others with their urgent, practical needs, we suddenly stop feeling unfruitful. We find our purpose not by overthinking it, but by being tangibly useful to someone else.

Stop waiting for a grand, cinematic calling. We often get paralyzed because we think "doing good" means starting a non-profit, moving across the world, or quitting our jobs to build houses. But true purpose is usually much quieter and far more local. You don’t need a life-changing epiphany to be helpful. You just need to be willing to look at the ordinary spaces you already occupy—your neighborhood, your office, your kid’s school—and ask who might be struggling today. The extraordinary is almost always found hidden in the incredibly ordinary.

Look for the practical gaps. The best way to step out of your own head is to address a tangible, immediate need. Is there a co-worker drowning under a deadline who could use someone to grab them lunch? Does the elderly neighbor on your street need their driveway shoveled or their lawn mowed? Is a friend navigating a brutal week with a sick kid who desperately needs someone to just drop off a bag of groceries on the porch? When you shift your energy toward solving a concrete, practical problem for someone else, the abstract, heavy problems in your own mind tend to lose their paralyzing grip.

Make it a regular devotion, not just a random act. It’s wonderful to pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the drive-thru, but true traction in life comes from consistency. Try turning helpfulness into a steady habit. Dedicate a specific couple of hours a week to step outside your own bubble. Volunteer at a local food bank, mentor a student, or simply commit to checking in on an overwhelmed friend every single Tuesday. It’s the steady, predictable rhythm of showing up for others that slowly rebuilds your own foundation of meaning.

Let the action change your feelings. We usually think we need to feel motivated before we take action. We wait for a wave of inspiration to strike before we start doing good. But human psychology actually works in reverse. Action creates momentum. When you start helping others—even if you feel completely exhausted and empty on day one—the act of being genuinely useful begins to generate the very joy and energy you were waiting for. You don’t have to feel ready; you just have to start.

You don’t have to stay stuck in the mud, spinning your wheels and wondering what the point of it all is. Your life is meant to have impact, texture, and deep meaning. The next time you feel the walls closing in and the routine grinding you down, try an experiment. Take the spotlight off your own life for just a moment, and shine it on someone who needs a hand. Where might there be an urgent, practical need right in your own orbit today, and how could you step in to meet it?

I’d love to hear from you—what’s one small, practical way someone recently helped you when you really needed it?
