PLAIN CITY, Ohio \u2014 The excitement of space exploration resonated through the Jonathan Alder Local School District as students gathered for the annual \u2018Space Day\u2019 event. Recently back from the Artemis II mission, former NASA astronaut Dr. Don Thomas captivated the audience with his tales from orbit and visions for the future.<\/p>\n

With an impressive career spanning 20 years at NASA and four space shuttle missions, Thomas, an Ohio native, shared his experiences and insights into the Artemis II mission\u2014an endeavor that marked the farthest distance humans have ventured from Earth. "I was more than just a little bit envious of that crew," Thomas remarked, reflecting on the thrill of space travel and its impact on both students and adults alike.<\/p>\n

In discussing the mission, Thomas emphasized not just the importance of the Artemis II flight, but the hope it ignites for future generations. \u201cI\u2019m too old to go to Mars, but I want to see us get to Mars,\u201d he said, encouraging students to dream big. "The astronauts going to Mars are the generation we have today."<\/p>\n

This legacy of inspiration mirrors the biblical principle found in Proverbs 22:6, which reads, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Just as education shapes the minds of future leaders, Thomas’s visit serves as a beacon for young dreamers, reminding them of their potential to achieve great things.<\/p>\n

Emily Byers, director of technology and innovation at Jonathan Alder, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host Thomas. \u201cWhat he is sharing can inspire our students,\u201d she noted, reflecting on the school\u2019s aspiration to cultivate future astronauts among their ranks.<\/p>\n

The event, which is now in its third year in collaboration with Amazon, also featured hands-on activities that allowed students to engage deeply with the wonders of space exploration. <\/p>\n

As the students listened to Thomas’s story, they were reminded that their dreams can reach beyond the stars. \u201cIt\u2019s important for me to challenge them,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cWe need astronauts for going to Mars.\u201d<\/p>\n
