KINGSTON, R.I.\u2014SEPT. 15, 2025<\/strong>\u2014A recent public opinion poll conducted by researchers at the University of Rhode Island has revealed a striking consensus among residents: a staggering 93%<\/strong> believe that housing costs pose a significant problem. However, opinions diverge sharply when it comes to potential solutions, suggesting that while many recognize the pressing need for action, the pathway to resolution remains unclear.<\/p>\n

This poll, part of the Rhode Island Survey Initiative<\/strong>, surveyed 500<\/strong> Rhode Island residents aged 18 and older from Aug. 1 to Aug. 18, 2025<\/strong>. The initiative, spearheaded by URI\u2019s Harrington School of Communication and Media and supported by various departments, aims to provide valuable insights into state issues. The margin of error for this poll is \u00b16.01%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As Ashlea Rundlett, URI associate professor of political science and a member of the research team, noted, \u201cGiven rising costs and the lack of affordable housing, it felt pertinent to explore Rhode Islanders\u2019 opinions on the topic.\u201d While residents showed broad support for solutions such as repairing existing affordable units (90%) and converting vacant buildings into housing (87%), they expressed mixed feelings about the construction of new housing in their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

For instance, while between 73% and 81%<\/strong> of respondents supported various housing types at the state level, only 42%<\/strong> were on board with new single-family homes in their own areas. Support dwindled further for public housing (21%) and homeless shelters (17%). Yet, an overwhelming 65%<\/strong> indicated they would back measures to sanction towns opposing affordable housing.<\/p>\n

This dissonance reflects a broader tension many face: the desire for communal empathy often conflicts with localized concerns. Interestingly, a majority of 75%<\/strong> of respondents supported the creation of a public medical school at URI to address the doctor shortage. This proactive approach shows that communities are willing to invest in their future, aligning with the principle of stewardship which emphasizes taking action for the common good.<\/p>\n

Trust and Governance<\/h3>\n

When it comes to government trust, approximately 60%<\/strong> of respondents expressed confidence in local and state leadership, a significant contrast to the diminished trust in federal branches. With 81%<\/strong> of Rhode Islanders perceiving political violence as a serious concern, this highlights a collective yearning for stability and unity, reflecting the biblical call to pursue peace and justice in societal structures.<\/p>\n

Despite the complexities of political landscapes, many Rhode Islanders are still seeking hope through governance. Voter uncertainty remains high in the upcoming Democratic primary, with 40.6%<\/strong> of respondents undecided\u2014a reminder of the critical engagement needed in civic duty.<\/p>\n
