Norway Leads the Way in Global CO\u2082 Absorption with Ambitious Storage Project<\/h3>\n

Norway has ambitious plans to combat climate change, recently launching Phase 2 of the world\u2019s foremost cross-border CO\u2082 storage site. The initiative aims to absorb around 5 million tons of carbon<\/strong> annually, marking a significant step in the quest for global pollution management. Situated approximately 2,600 meters (8,530 feet)<\/strong> beneath the seabed of the North Sea, this project sets the stage for a transformative approach to carbon capture and storage (CCS).<\/p>\n

A Recap of the Initial Phase of Northern Lights<\/h4>\n

This endeavor is part of Longship<\/strong>, Norway\u2019s government-backed CCS program, led by energy giants Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies<\/strong>. The initial phase of the Northern Lights project, completed in 2025, successfully injected CO\u2082 from Heidelberg Materials\u2019 cement plant in Brevik into an Aurora reservoir under the North Sea. By utilizing a 100-kilometer (62-mile)<\/strong> subsea pipeline, 1.5 million tons<\/strong> of CO\u2082 are slated for storage each year. Prominent players such as Yara (Netherlands), \u00d8rsted (Denmark), and Stockholm Exergi (Sweden)<\/strong> have already joined, laying the groundwork for industrial-scale carbon handling.<\/p>\n

Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV, has reported that the initial phase is functioning effectively, signaling a promising future for carbon storage.<\/p>\n
