As the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) pervades nearly every facet of our lives, a cautionary voice emerges from the realm of Catholic bioethics. According to Charles Camosy<\/strong>, a professor at the Catholic University of America, it is \u201cnot too late\u201d to mitigate the potential hazards associated with AI technology. The stakes are high, he asserts, and we must avoid letting this \u201cgenie out of the bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Leo XIV<\/strong>, a recent voice on the matter, has echoed these concerns, particularly regarding the negative impacts of AI on youth development. He linked his papacy’s name to that of Leo XIII<\/strong>, who faced similar technological upheavals during the Industrial Revolution. \u201cWe\u2019re undergoing right now a similar technological change that is going to totally transform the culture,\u201d Camosy remarked, invoking the urgency of contemplating our response.<\/p>\n

In an article for The Atlantic<\/em>, Camosy argues that addressing AI could become the significant legacy of Pope Leo XIV. He highlights how AI’s increasing capability challenges our understanding of human connection, noting, \u201cpeople often can’t tell the difference between a human being and a chatbot.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Spiritual and Ethical Implications<\/h3>\n

As technology reshapes our interactions, Camosy raises an existential question: \u201cHow do we respond?\u201d He emphasizes the fundamental difference between humanity and machines, extending beyond data processing to our intrinsic value\u2014being created in the image of God. This perspective resonates with the teachings of Jesus, who emphasized the significance of human relationships and the value of each individual:<\/p>\n

A Call to Ethical Action<\/h3>\n

The Church has actively addressed AI’s ethical considerations through working groups, demonstrating a proactive stance on the complexities of this emerging technology. Camosy notes, \u201cThe Church has been ahead of the broader culture on AI.\u201d He references the Vatican\u2019s document, "Antiqua et Nova,"<\/strong> which explores the intersection of artificial and human intelligence.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Camosy implores society to ensure that technology serves humanity, rather than the reverse. He emphasizes that the integrity of work\u2014an essential aspect of our human experience\u2014must be preserved. \u201cWe need protections for work. We need protections for workers,\u201d he asserts.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on this critical juncture in our technological evolution, Camosy exclaims, \u201cThank God we have someone like Pope Leo\u201d to guide us. His remarks invite us to ponder not just the implications of AI, but also our responsibilities as stewards of creation.<\/p>\n
