Springtime Joy at Fermilab: Arrival of Baby Bison Heralds New Life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Batavia, IL \u2013<\/em> In a celebration of new beginnings, the Department of Energy\u2019s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory welcomed two adorable baby bison on April 21, kicking off the annual calving season at this unique site where cutting-edge particle physics research meets the beauty of the American prairie.<\/p>\n

Cleo Garcia, Fermilab’s herdsman, expressed the excitement of the moment, noting, "Our herd is doing well. Each year, we monitor the cows closely to estimate how many calves we\u2019ll have. It\u2019s always exciting to see the first birth of the season." This year, Garcia anticipates around 20 calves to be born by June.<\/p>\n

Fermilab’s bison herd has been a part of the laboratory\u2019s landscape since 1969, cultivating a deep-rooted connection to the heritage of the prairie. Currently comprising 23 cows and two bulls, the herd’s management promotes genetic diversity, with thorough testing confirming their purity as American bison.
