In a significant step toward bolstering military health readiness, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research \u2013 Europe\u2013Middle East (WRAIR-EME) conducted its inaugural disease surveillance training for the Polish Armed Forces Epidemiological Response Center in Tbilisi, Georgia, from February 17 to 21. This pioneering initiative underscored an essential aspect of military operations and care that often lies in the shadows\u2014disease prevention and vector surveillance.<\/p>\n

The training encompassed the entire spectrum of vector surveillance, from the meticulous field collection of mosquitos and ticks to advanced genetic testing and data analysis. Colonel Barbara Bujak, Director of WRAIR-EME, remarked, \u201cThis training was the first of many to come. Training the Polish Armed Forces and synergizing our efforts helps us better understand the vectors and the disease threats.\u201d This reinforces a vital truth echoed in scripture\u2014that knowledge and preparedness serve as tools for protection and service, underlying the principle found in Proverbs 2:6, \u201cFor the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since beginning their collaboration in 2020, the two forces have focused on ticks and their associated pathogens, ultimately leading to a formal data-sharing agreement. Plans to expand vector collection efforts to include other potential health risks such as mosquitos and sandflies reflect a proactive approach to military health challenges, resonating with the biblical tenet of loving one\u2019s neighbor by ensuring the safety and health of those who serve.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the underlying ethos of this training initiative\u2014strengthening partnerships and enhancing interoperability\u2014serves as a reminder of the community, support, and love that is essential in any mission. As Col. Bujak stated, \u201cBy hosting this training and facilitating more trainings in the future, we are strengthening our partnerships, enhancing interoperability, and maintaining medical readiness for our warfighters.\u201d <\/p>\n
