Detroit Mom Finds Relief from Financial Struggles through Innovative Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

DETROIT (WXYZ) \u2014<\/strong> As the New Year rolls in, many individuals and families find themselves reassessing their financial situations. The daunting tasks of paying off debts and saving for significant goals, such as homeownership, can feel overwhelming. Yet, for one Detroit mother, a program designed to empower those facing financial challenges has provided a ray of hope and guidance.<\/p>\n

Latoya Kelly, a single mother of three, faced a significant setback when she lost her job in October. With a credit score hovering around 580 and financial burdens from credit card debt and collections, the situation felt hopeless. \u201cVery stressful,\u201d she reflected, recalling the countless housing applications that ended in rejection.<\/p>\n

In search of help, Latoya joined the HarMoney<\/strong> program offered by Gesher Human Services<\/strong><\/a>, a financial repair initiative aimed specifically at low-to-moderate income families. Through the program, Latoya learned to differentiate between her needs and wants, allowing her to identify unnecessary expenses \u2014 like her daily coffee run \u2014 that were impacting her finances.<\/p>\n

Starting in February, Gesher will host another session of the HarMoney program, which includes weekly virtual classes designed to provide attendees with vital financial skills. The program\u2019s curriculum includes practical tasks such as mapping out credit card payment schedules, with the goal of boosting participants’ credit scores. According to Laltsha Cunningham, the financial education manager at Gesher, many families have seen credit score increases of over 200 points within 90 days of completing the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who finish the webinar can qualify for up to $2,500, which can be used to pay off debts or served as a down payment on a house,\u201d explained Jason Charnas, Director of Business and Career Services at Gesher. This year, the program has expanded thanks to increased funding from Huntington Bank, allowing them to assist even more individuals seeking financial stability and the dream of homeownership.<\/p>\n

Latoya utilized the grant money to pay off debt in hopes of raising her credit score and eventually becoming a homeowner herself. \u201cDon\u2019t be embarrassed,\u201d she advises others facing similar financial struggles. \u201cReach out for help. This program has helped me tremendously.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lessons learned through this program resonate with the biblical principle found in Proverbs 16:3: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." It highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and guidance in our endeavors, particularly regarding financial stewardship. By participating in HarMoney, Latoya exemplifies a commitment not only to her financial recovery but also to building a more secure future for her family.<\/p>\n
