Yet, for French interior designer Nicolas Payet, bending the rules is at the heart of his creative process. Nestled in a quaint 1930s apartment building in Neuilly-Plaisance, Payet’s compact 78-square-meter home\u2014affectionately known as the chambre de bonne<\/em>\u2014was originally the maid\u2019s quarters tucked away in the attic. His goal? To create a \u201ccontemporary and colorful cabin\u201d that reflects both his personal history and design vision, inspired by his childhood love for tree houses. In this serene space, he lives with his two daughters, Mila, age 11, and Liv, age 7, who share a bedroom dressed in cheerful pink and yellow hues.<\/p>\n

\u201cColor for me is my way of expressing myself,\u201d Payet emphasizes, embodying a biblical principle of embracing creativity as a form of worship and self-expression. The green Hay Quilton sofa, a stunning emerald piece designed by Doshi Levien, serves as both the focal point and foundation for Payet’s interiors. \u201cI was completely obsessed with this vibrant green,\u201d he recalls, choosing to celebrate it throughout the space\u2014including in the arches he constructed in the walls and the carefully curated decor in his open-plan living area. Payet undertook extensive renovations to transform the space, removing layers of old tiles to reveal the original pine floor and creating bespoke storage to optimize the limited area. Through this process of transformation, he embodies the biblical concept of renewal, as shared in 2 Corinthians 5:17, which states, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
