When you think of heroines in the Bible, women like Ruth and Esther may come to mind immediately. But today, let’s turn our spotlight onto Jael, whose story unfolds in the Book of Judges. Jael\u2019s bold act not only showcases bravery but also offers timeless lessons on courage and faith.<\/p>\n

The Setting: Israel\u2019s Oppression<\/h2>\n

The story of Jael takes place during a period in which the Israelites were suffering under the oppression of King Jabin of Canaan. Deborah, a prophetess and judge of Israel, called upon Barak to lead an army and go against Jabin’s general, Sisera. Deborah\u2019s faith-driven leadership paints the backdrop for Jael\u2019s moment of courage. Judges 4:3 describes the dire situation: \u201cBecause he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the Lord for help.\u201d<\/p>\n

With courage and a tent peg in hand, she struck Sisera, delivering Israel from a fierce adversary.<\/p>\n

Judges 5:24-26 sums up her courage: \u201cMost blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women. He asked for water, and she gave him milk; in a bowl fit for nobles, she brought him curdled milk. Her hand reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman\u2019s hammer. She struck Sisera, she crushed his head, she shattered and pierced his temple.\u201d<\/p>\n
