Maybe in a car, maybe at a kitchen table, maybe watching something on a phone at one in the morning. Something settled, and you meant it.

Then the advice arrived, and it was all one sentence long: find a church. And here you are, weeks later, not in one. Maybe there isn’t a good one nearby. Maybe you left the last one and the thought of a lobby makes your chest tight. Maybe you work Sundays. Maybe you just cannot walk into a room full of strangers who all seem to know when to stand up.

So the real question is not whether church is good. The question is what happens to you in the meantime, and whether the meantime counts.

Show Me Day 1

Someone in the Bible asked your exact question

In Acts 8 there is a man riding home in a chariot. He is an official from Ethiopia, in charge of a queen’s treasury, and he has just been to Jerusalem to worship. He is reading the prophet Isaiah out loud, and he does not understand a word of it.

Philip catches up to the chariot and asks whether he understands what he is reading. And the man answers with the sentence you have probably said some version of this month:

“How can I, except some man should guide me?”

That is the whole problem, stated by someone a very long way from home, with no church, no small group and no Christian friend. He is not lacking sincerity. He is not lacking the text — he has a scroll of Isaiah with him, and Luke says he ran a queen’s treasury, so he is a man with resources. What he lacks is one person to sit down and point.

Then his guide was taken away, mid-journey

Here is the part almost nobody mentions. Philip gets in the chariot, explains the passage, preaches Jesus to him, and the man asks to be baptised on the spot. They stop at some water by the road and Philip baptises him.

And then, in the same verse, Philip is gone:

“And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.”

Read that sequence slowly, because the order of it is remarkable. The man says he cannot do this without a guide. God sends him a guide. The guide answers the question, baptises him — and is then removed before the water has dried. One lesson. No follow-up visit. No phone number. No congregation waiting at the other end of the road.

Luke had every chance to write that ending as a loss. He wrote rejoicing instead. Whatever had just happened to that man was not fragile enough to need Philip standing next to it.

Paul’s first three years are nearly blank

There is a second case, and it belongs to the man who wrote most of the New Testament’s letters. Paul tells the Galatians what he did immediately after God got hold of him:

“Immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.”

Three years, then a fortnight with Peter. That is the entire account of his mentoring in the opening chapter of Galatians.

Be careful with this one, because Paul is making a specific argument and it is worth stating honestly: he is defending where his message came from, not writing a how-to on discipleship. Elsewhere, Acts 9 puts him among the disciples at Damascus, so “alone” overstates it. But the shape of what he says still stands, and he says it without a trace of apology — the years that formed him had no apostle in them, and he did not treat that as a defect in his start.

The smallest number Jesus ever named was two or three

You have probably heard Matthew 18:20 quoted at a half-empty room: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

It is usually quoted as comfort about a low turnout, and in context it is not even about turnout — the verses just above it are instructions for sorting out a falling-out between two people. But the number is still the number, and it is worth noticing how small it is. Jesus attached His own presence to a figure that fits in a car.

And it is not one. That is the honest reading, and it is actually the most useful thing on this page: the target you are aiming at is not a building, a service time or a membership form. It is one other person. That is a dramatically smaller thing to go looking for, and it is the kind of thing you can find at work, in a family, in a text thread, or in a comment section before you ever find a congregation you trust.

What this is not

This is not a case against church. Hebrews says plainly, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is” — a direct instruction not to drift out of gathering, written to people who were already doing exactly that. Gathering is not optional extra credit.

But look at how the first believers actually lived, in Acts 2:46: “continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house.” Both halves, every day. The temple half is the big gathering. The house-to-house half needs a kitchen and somebody to sit in it.

Only one of those halves requires anyone else’s schedule. Start the half you can start. Keep looking for the other one.

What to actually do this week

Here is the ordinary version, with no spiritual athleticism in it.

Pick a time, not a target. Fifteen minutes attached to something you already do without deciding to — the kettle, the commute, the ten minutes after the house goes quiet. Attaching it to something that already happens means you do not have to remember it.

Read one Gospel in order, start to finish. Not a verse from a search result. The Gospels are four accounts of one life, and read in order they make sense in a way a daily verse never will. Mark is the shortest.

Write the question down. The eunuch’s first move was to say out loud that he did not understand. Keep a note on your phone of what confused you. You now have something concrete to ask a real person, which is far easier than asking “will you teach me about God?”

Talk to Jesus in your own words, out loud, badly. There is no register you are failing to use. Plain speech is the register.

Go find your one person. Not a church yet — a person. Ask the one you suspect might say yes.

Do that for a month and the thing you were afraid of does not happen. You do not drift. You arrive at the far end actually knowing something about Jesus rather than knowing that you ought to — and you walk into whatever church you eventually find as someone with questions and a bit of ground under them, not as someone starting from zero at the back of the room.

The one thing the man in the chariot was missing

He had the text, and he had an honest question. What he lacked was a guide, for about twenty minutes, on a road.

That is the gap, and it is the only gap. Not willpower, not a building, not better feelings. Just somebody to go first through the part where you do not know what you are looking at.

30 Days Walking with Jesus was built to be that, for someone doing this on their own. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time, in order, so you are reading an actual story instead of hunting for verses. Each day has a short devotional video under a minute, a full-chapter audio reading for the days you can only listen, and a PDF study guide with journal prompts for the question you want to write down. There are five quick-reference scripture guides for when you need to find something fast. It is beginner-friendly on purpose, because that is who it is for. Under ten minutes a day, thirty days, and at the end of it you will have read the Gospels with someone pointing.

It costs nothing. No card, no payment, no upsell, no expiry — the words of Jesus should not sit behind a paywall. Instant access on any device, and it is yours to keep. If you would rather start reading on your own first, our guide on how to start reading the Bible when you don’t understand it is a good next click, and if the honest problem right now is that none of this feels like anything, we wrote about how to follow Jesus when you don’t feel anything too. You are the man in the chariot, and the road is where this started.

Start Walking with Jesus – Day 1

Questions People Are Asking

Q: Can you follow Jesus on your own, without going to church?
A: You can start, and the New Testament shows people doing exactly that. In Acts 8 an Ethiopian official believes and is baptised on a desert road, and the man who taught him is taken away immediately afterwards — Luke writes that he “went on his way rejoicing” as he travelled home, with no congregation waiting for him. That said, Scripture does not treat gathering as optional: Hebrews 10:25 says “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is.” The honest answer is that following Jesus starts the day you decide, and gathering with other believers is something to keep seeking rather than something you must arrange before you are allowed to begin.

Q: How do I start following Jesus if I don’t know anything about the Bible?
A: Read one Gospel from beginning to end, in order, rather than reading single verses from search results. Mark is the shortest of the four. Give it a fixed fifteen minutes attached to something you already do daily, keep a note of anything you do not understand, and talk to Jesus in plain language out loud. Not understanding is a normal starting point, not a disqualification — the Ethiopian official in Acts 8 said outright, “How can I, except some man should guide me?”, and that question is what got him an answer.

Q: What does “where two or three are gathered” actually mean?
A: Matthew 18:20 reads, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” It is usually quoted as reassurance about a small turnout, though the verses immediately before it are instructions for resolving a dispute between two people. What the number shows is how low the floor is: Jesus attached His presence to two or three, not to a crowd or a building. It is worth noting the floor is not one, which is why the practical goal for someone starting alone is to find a single other believer rather than a whole congregation.

Q: Did Paul have anyone teaching him after he became a believer?
A: By his own account, very little at first. In Galatians 1 he writes, “Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.” Paul’s point there is about where his message came from rather than about discipleship method, and Acts 9 does place him among the disciples at Damascus, so he was not strictly alone. But he describes three years with no apostle in them and shows no embarrassment about it.

Q: What is 30 Days Walking with Jesus, and what does it cost?
A: It is a beginner-friendly reading plan that walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time through the Gospels, designed to take under ten minutes a day for thirty days. It includes thirty short devotional videos of under a minute each, thirty full-chapter audio readings, a complete PDF study guide with journal prompts, and five quick-reference scripture guides. It is free — no payment, no card required and no upsell — with instant access on any device, and it stays yours.
