You say it in the car. You say it at the sink. You’ve mostly stopped saying it to other people, because then they ask how it’s going, and you don’t have an answer.

So you went looking for a custom prayer candle with that name on it. Maybe it’s a son who stopped calling, a husband waiting on a scan, or a friend in a hard year. You’re not after a decoration. You want something on the table that says this one, God, this person, every day.

Here’s the honest answer first. MyCandlePrayers candles don’t come with a name printed or engraved on them. There’s no monogram and no made-to-order option, so if the printed name is the whole point, this isn’t that. But what you’re trying to do has a very old pattern behind it, and that pattern has a surprising detail about where the names go.

The Bible Has a Custom Engraving Job

In Exodus, God gives instructions for what Israel’s high priest will wear, and part of it reads like an order to a stonecutter. Two onyx stones, twelve names, cut the way a seal is cut:

“With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel” (Exodus 28:11, KJV)

Those two stones sat on the priest’s shoulders. Twelve more stones, carrying the same names, sat on his chest. They were the names of the tribes, so picture family names for a whole people rather than a list of individuals. Exodus says why they were there:

“And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually.” (Exodus 28:29, KJV)

So the names went in two places: on the shoulders, where a person carries weight, and over the heart, where a person keeps what they love. Exodus doesn’t explain that choice, but anyone who has prayed for the same person for a long time will recognize it.

The Detail Most People Walk Past

Now look at what else was in that room. The holy place held the golden lampstand, and Aaron tended it. Exodus 30:7-8 has him dressing the lamps in the morning and lighting them “at even,” which is old English for evening. (We looked at that twice-a-day rhythm in our piece on the 7 day prayer candle.)

The instructions for that lampstand are long and fussy. Pure gold, six branches, bowls shaped like almonds, knops and flowers. They never mention a name.

So the light had no names on it, and the man who tended the light had them on his body. Exodus never draws that comparison for us, so hold it lightly. But it’s the most useful thing we can tell you about a candle with a name. The Bible’s engraved names didn’t go on the lamp. They went on the person who came to the lamp.

In your house, that person is you. The name you wanted on the glass is already on you. You’ve been carrying it around for months.

What you may want now is a place to bring it. Each MyCandlePrayers candle carries one Bible verse, so while the glass can’t hold their name, it can hold the verse that fits what they’re going through.

Find the Verse That Fits

Four Ways to Put the Name There Yourself

You can still have the name at the candle. It just goes on by hand, and that suits the purpose.

Write it on the bottom of the glass. Use a paint pen on the underside of the jar before the first lighting. Nobody else will see it, but you’ll know it’s there. When the wax is gone and the glass is washed, the name is still on it.

Tie on a tag for the hours it isn’t lit. A paper tag on twine, with the name in your own handwriting, looks lovely, especially on a gift. Take it off before you light the candle, every time, because paper doesn’t belong near a flame. That small step can become part of the prayer: the name is in your hand before the match is.

Pray the shoulders and the heart. At the light, say two short things about this person: one thing they’re carrying, and one thing you love about them. On a tired night, that can be the whole prayer.

Let a verse take their name. Choose a verse and pray it with their name where the “you” sits. Romans 15:13 begins, “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.” At your table that can become a prayer of your own: God of hope, fill ______ with joy and peace. You aren’t changing the verse. You’re asking God for what it describes.

A Prayer With a Space for the Name

Use this the first time you light it, and change anything that doesn’t sound like you.

God, I’ve brought ______ to you again.
You have heard this name from me more times than I can count, and I know you haven’t forgotten it.
I’m the one who needs the light on.
Here is what they’re carrying today: ______. I can’t lift it, so I’m bringing it to you.
Here is what I love about them: ______. Thank you for that.
Keep them tonight in the places I can’t reach.
Amen.

Who Actually Needs the Reminder

A candle with a name on it can slide toward a bad idea, so let’s say this plainly. The flame doesn’t keep anyone safe, and it doesn’t remind God of anything. It’s a reminder for you, and an act of prayer.

Isaiah settles who does the remembering. Zion complains that God has forgotten, and God answers with the strongest picture there is, a mother and a nursing child: “yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee” (Isaiah 49:15, KJV). Then the engraving comes back, and this time the hands are God’s:

“Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” (Isaiah 49:16, KJV)

Christians read one step further, because the high priest’s job didn’t end with Aaron. Hebrews says of Jesus, “he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25, KJV). John says He “calleth his own sheep by name” (John 10:3, KJV). And on the night before the cross, Jesus told a friend who was about to fall apart, “Simon, Simon,” and then, “I have prayed for thee” (Luke 22:31-32, KJV).

So when you say that name at your kitchen table, you aren’t the only one saying it.

Choosing the Candle for That Name

Since the glass won’t carry the name, let the verse carry the situation. Start with what they’re going through:

Fill Me With Hope, Lord for a diagnosis, a treatment, or a long wait on healing.

God, Protect Me Today for someone far from home or in a risky season.

Trust In God’s Plan for a road that doesn’t make sense yet.

Give Me Courage, Lord for a scary next step.

God, Be My Strength for someone who is simply worn out.

Our earlier look at what makes a verse candle personal walks through the full range. If the name you’re carrying belongs to someone who has died, we wrote about that separately: a custom prayer candle in memory of a loved one.

Every candle also has a QR code that opens more than 100 written prayers sorted by need, including strength, healing, peace, guidance and protection. You don’t need an app or an account. The prayer above is yours today, and those hundred are there for the mornings when the blank stays blank. The candle itself is 9 oz of soy wax with a 50 to 60 hour burn, the glass is made to keep, and it ships to your door.

Picture a month from now. The tag is in your pocket, the name is on the bottom of the jar, and the wax has dropped an inch. Nothing about the situation may have changed yet. But you’ve brought that name to the same place, on purpose, a few dozen times, and you’ve stopped carrying it around with nowhere to set it down.

Find the Right Candle for Them

Questions People Are Asking

Q: Can you get a custom prayer candle with a name on it?
A: Not from the MyCandlePrayers line. There is no printed or engraved name, monogram or photo option. What you choose is the verse. You can add a name yourself by writing it on the underside of the glass with a paint pen, or by tying on a paper tag that you remove before lighting. You can choose the verse that fits them from the full range on one page.

Q: Why did the high priest wear names on his breastplate?
A: Exodus 28 tells Israel’s high priest to wear the names of the twelve tribes on two onyx stones at his shoulders and on twelve stones over his heart. Exodus 28:29 (KJV) says Aaron bore them “upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually.” He carried his whole people with him when he came near to God.

Q: Is it biblical to pray for someone by name?
A: Yes. In Luke 22:31-32 (KJV), Jesus says “Simon, Simon” and tells him, “I have prayed for thee.” John 10:3 (KJV) says the shepherd “calleth his own sheep by name.” Saying a person’s name in prayer isn’t required for God to know who you mean, but it keeps your prayer specific and keeps that person in front of you.

Q: Does lighting a candle for someone help them?
A: The candle has no power of its own, and the flame doesn’t protect or heal anyone. In Christian practice a prayer candle is a reminder and an act of prayer. It sets aside a time and place for you to bring a person to God. God doesn’t need the reminder: Isaiah 49:15 (KJV) says, “yet will I not forget thee.”

            <div
