Maybe it was you, lying awake, after a phone call you never wanted to get. And most of us answer the same way. We look up. We point at the sky.

So what does the Bible say about heaven? Quite a lot, and much of it is not what we picture. We picture leaving. We picture a long trip upward to somewhere far away.

The last two chapters of the Bible show something else. Something is moving, yes. But it is not moving the way you think.

What Does the Bible Say About Heaven? Three Things, Not One

Part of the confusion is that the Bible uses the word “heaven” for three different things.

The sky. Birds fly “in the open firmament of heaven” (Genesis 1:20, KJV).

Space. God tells Abraham, “Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars” (Genesis 15:5, KJV).

The place where God is. “The LORD’s throne is in heaven” (Psalm 11:4, KJV).

It also helps to know there are two stages in view. The first is what happens when a believer dies. Paul wrote that he would rather be “absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8, KJV). Jesus told a dying man, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43, KJV). Those lines tell us who you are with. They tell us very little about what it looks like.

The second stage is the end of the whole story. That is where the Bible finally opens the curtain, and it is where we are going today. (Other questions deserve their own room. We looked at whether we will know each other in heaven and whether people in heaven watch over us separately.)

The City Is Going the Wrong Way

Here is the scene near the very end of the Bible. Read it slowly, and watch the direction.

“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” (Revelation 21:2-3, KJV)

Coming down.

Nobody in this scene flies up. The city comes down. The Bible’s big ending is not people finally getting away from earth. It is God moving in with people.

The word “dwell” there is a tent word in Greek. It means to pitch a tent and live beside someone. It shows up only five times in the whole New Testament. Four are in Revelation. The other one is here:

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14, KJV)

That is the same verb. What began in Bethlehem finishes in Revelation 21. God has been moving in this direction for a long time.

A Question Solomon Asked Centuries Too Early

Now go back to the day King Solomon opened the temple in Jerusalem. It was the finest building his people had ever made. And in the middle of his prayer, he stopped and asked the honest question:

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?” (1 Kings 8:27, KJV)

Will God indeed dwell on the earth?

Revelation 21:3 reads like the answer. Yes. God will. And the room Solomon built holds a clue about how.

The Whole City Has the Shape of One Room

Deep inside that temple was the most holy room of all. The King James Bible calls it the oracle. You may know it as the Holy of Holies. Here are its measurements:

“And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold;” (1 Kings 6:20, KJV)

Long, wide and tall, all the same. That is a cube, roughly 9 metres each way, covered in pure gold.

Now here is how John measures the city coming down:

“twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.” (Revelation 21:16, KJV)

Another cube. This one is roughly 2,200 kilometres each way. And it is made of “pure gold, like unto clear glass” (Revelation 21:18, KJV).

I should be careful here. John never says, “this city is the Holy of Holies.” You get there by laying the two passages side by side. Revelation is also full of picture language, and Christians do not all agree on how literally to take the city. So hold the measurements loosely.

But then John says this:

“And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.” (Revelation 21:22, KJV)

No temple, because the whole place is now what the temple was for.

Think about what that room meant. Hebrews says that only “the high priest alone once every year” went in, and “not without blood” (Hebrews 9:7, KJV). One man. One day a year. For everyone else, the place where God was closest stayed behind a curtain.

In the city, everyone lives in that room.

Streets of Gold Were Never About Being Rich

This changes one of the most famous details about heaven. Revelation does say “the street of the city was pure gold” (Revelation 21:21, KJV). People often hear that as luxury, as if heaven were a reward with a very nice address.

But look at the temple again. “And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold, within and without” (1 Kings 6:30, KJV).

Gold underfoot was not a rich man’s driveway. It was the floor of God’s house. If you are reading this with very little money, hear this plainly: the gold is not a prize for people who did well. It tells you whose house you are standing in.

Two Things That Were Once Out of Reach

Then comes a line worth reading twice.

“And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.” (Revelation 22:4, KJV)

Both halves of that sentence were once impossible.

The face. Moses, of all people, asked to see God’s glory. He was told, “Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live” (Exodus 33:20, KJV). In the city, that line is gone. “They shall see his face.” Not one great prophet. All of them.

The name. The high priest wore a plate of pure gold, engraved with the words “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” (Exodus 28:36, KJV), and it sat “upon Aaron’s forehead” (Exodus 28:38, KJV). One person in the whole nation wore God’s name there.

In the city, everybody does.

Whatever else heaven is, it is not a place where a few special people get close while the rest watch from far away. The nearness that once belonged to one man on one day belongs to everyone, all the time.

What About “Many Mansions”?

You have probably heard this line at a funeral:

“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2, KJV)

It is easy to picture a big private house with your name on the gate. But the Greek word behind “mansions” is mone. It comes from a verb meaning to stay, and it simply means a place where you stay.

That word appears only twice in the entire New Testament. Both times are in this one chapter. Here is the second, just 21 verses later. Jesus says it:

“If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” (John 14:23, KJV)

“Abode” is the same word.

Read those two side by side. In verse 2, Jesus goes to prepare a staying place for you. In verse 23, God comes to make a staying place with you. Same word. Opposite direction. And the second one does not wait until you die.

Heaven Is Not Your Exit. It Is Where This Is All Heading

Here is what that does to an ordinary Tuesday.

If heaven is only a place you leave for, then this life is a waiting room. You keep your head down and hold on until your name is called.

But if the story ends with God coming here, then this world is not being thrown away, and neither is your small life in it. Jesus taught people to pray for exactly this direction: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10, KJV). Heaven was never meant to stay up there.

That does not mean it has fully arrived. If you are reading this after a loss, you already know it has not. The promise is still ahead of us:

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4, KJV)

Notice how close that is. You cannot wipe a tear from a distance. It is the same movement as the rest of the chapter. God comes all the way down, near enough to touch your face.

And it is not a picture of doing nothing forever, either. The next chapter says “his servants shall serve him” (Revelation 22:3, KJV). There is still something to do. If you want to know how little the Bible gives us beyond that, the closest eyewitness simply refused to describe what he saw. Even the line people quote about it, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard” (1 Corinthians 2:9, KJV), is followed straight away by “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:10, KJV).

We do not get a map. We get a direction. God is coming toward us, and has been the whole time.

Actions to Take

Read the ending out loud. Open Revelation 21:1-5 and read it slowly. It teaches that believers who die are “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8), and it ends with a new heaven and a new earth in Revelation 21. There, a holy city comes down from God, and a voice says “the tabernacle of God is with men.” The final picture is God living with people, with no more death, sorrow, crying or pain. The Bible gives few physical details and says more about who is there than what it looks like.

Do Christians go to heaven right after they die?

The Bible points to being with Jesus after death, though it gives few details. Jesus told a dying criminal, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” in Luke 23:43, and Paul described being “absent from the body” and “present with the Lord” in 2 Corinthians 5:8. Christians understand the details in different ways. Many distinguish this time with God after death from the final resurrection and the new creation described in Revelation 21.

What does “many mansions” mean in John 14:2?

In John 14:2, Jesus says, “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” The Greek word translated “mansions” is mone, which means a dwelling or place to stay, rather than a large private house. It appears only twice in the New Testament. The second use is John 14:23, where Jesus says that he and the Father “will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” The word translated “abode” is the same word, so the chapter describes both a place prepared for believers and God making a home with them.

Is the New Jerusalem in Revelation a cube?

Revelation 21:16 says of the New Jerusalem that “the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal,” which describes a cube measuring twelve thousand furlongs, roughly 2,200 kilometres. The Holy of Holies in Solomon’s temple was also a cube, twenty cubits long, wide and high, overlaid with pure gold, according to 1 Kings 6:20. Revelation does not state this link directly. Christians also differ on how literally to read the city, since Revelation uses a great deal of symbolic language.

How does a person get to heaven according to the Bible?

The Bible ties the way to God to a person rather than to a record of good deeds. In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” In Luke 23:43, Jesus promised paradise to a dying criminal who had nothing left to offer and could not repair his life. The New Testament presents this as trust in Jesus and a gift from God rather than something a person earns.

            <div
