Grace. Righteousness. Covenant. Somebody used “sanctification” in a sentence last Sunday like it was a normal word, and you nodded.

So the plan becomes obvious: learn more first. Get the knowledge down, then start actually living it. It sounds humble and it sounds responsible. There is a short conversation in Luke 10 that takes it apart completely, and it does it in the gentlest way possible — because the man asking the question had already done every bit of the learning.

Take the First Step

The man who asked knew the Scriptures cold

Luke sets the scene in one line: “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25, KJV).

That word “lawyer” has nothing to do with a courtroom. In the Gospels it means a specialist in the law of Moses — a man whose whole working life was the Scriptures. If anyone in that room had the vocabulary, the memorized passages and the confident answers, it was him.

Hold that next to your highlighter and your list of words. The person who starts this conversation is the one who already finished the reading.

Jesus didn’t answer. He asked two questions back.

Here is the reply, and it is worth reading slowly, because almost everyone remembers the first half and drops the second: “He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?” (Luke 10:26, KJV).

Two questions, not one. The first one is about the text — what does it say? The second one is not about the text at all. It is about the person holding it. How are you reading this?

And the man answers. Correctly, from memory, no help: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself” (Luke 10:27, KJV).

Then comes the sentence that should take the pressure off anyone new: “And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live” (Luke 10:28, KJV).

Thou hast answered right. The expert had the right answer the whole time, and Jesus said so out loud. Nothing was added. No deeper teaching, no correction, no reading list. The only thing in that reply the man did not already have was two words: this do.

“How readest thou?” is not the question Jesus usually asks

This is the part that surprised me, and it is easy to check for yourself. When Jesus asks people about reading in the Gospels, the question almost always has the same shape — and it is a yes-or-no question.

“Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred” (Matthew 12:3, KJV) — also Mark 2:25 and Luke 6:3.

“Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4, KJV).

“Have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God” (Matthew 22:31, KJV) — also Mark 12:26.

“Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner” (Matthew 21:42, KJV).

Every one of those asks whether. And notice who is standing there each time: Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, chief priests. The people getting asked “have ye not read” are the people who had read it most. They had the pages practically memorized and still walked straight past the point.

In Luke 10 the question changes shape. Not whether he had read it. How. That is the only question in the set that a brand-new believer is already fully equipped to answer.

Then Jesus does the same thing again, and the professionals walk past

The lawyer is not quite finished. “But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?” (Luke 10:29, KJV). So Jesus tells the story everyone knows — a man beaten and left half dead on the Jericho road.

Look at who comes down that road first. “And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side” (Luke 10:31-32, KJV).

A priest and a Levite. The two men in the story whose entire careers were built around the Scriptures. They both saw him. The Levite even stopped and looked. Then a Samaritan — the outsider, the one with no standing to teach anybody anything — “had compassion on him” (Luke 10:33, KJV) and handled it.

And Jesus closes it exactly the way He closed the first round. He asks the man a question (Luke 10:36). The man answers it right again: “He that shewed mercy on him.” And Jesus says, “Go, and do thou likewise” (Luke 10:37, KJV).

Twice in one conversation, Jesus is handed a question by the best-read man in the room, and twice He hands it back, lets the man answer it himself, and finishes with something to go do. Not one new fact was ever supplied.

What that changes about tomorrow morning

If knowledge were the gate, the lawyer would have been through it. He wasn’t short on information. So your shortage of information is not what stands between you and walking with Jesus, and you can stop treating it like a debt you have to pay off before you are allowed to begin.

Which means a new believer Bible study does not have to be a study of words you don’t know yet. It can be ten minutes of Jesus’s second question. Tomorrow, try it in this order:

Read one scene. One story about Jesus, not a chapter block. Five or six verses is plenty.

Answer question one. Say what happened, out loud, in your own ordinary words. If you can retell it, you have read it.

Answer question two. “How readest thou?” Ask what this scene is asking of you, today, in the life you actually have.

Name one thing to go do. Small and specific. A text you have been avoiding. A phone call. Letting something go.

That is under ten minutes, and here is what shifts after a couple of weeks of it. The Bible stops being a syllabus you are permanently behind on. It turns into the place you go in the morning to find out what the day is for. You will still have words you cannot define — and you will have stopped needing them in order to start.

It helps enormously to not be guessing what to open. If you are still deciding where to begin, here is why Genesis is the wrong first stop, and if you would rather have the whole route mapped out, this new believer reading plan reads one Gospel twice instead of racing you through four. And for the morning you oversleep and miss it entirely, there is a plan built around the day you miss.

A plan built for doing, not for cramming

This is the whole reason 30 Days Walking with Jesus exists. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time — a beginner-friendly reading plan through the Gospels — so you never open the app wondering where to go. Each day arrives in a few different shapes, so the ten minutes fit the day you are actually having:

30 short devotional videos, each under 60 seconds

30 full-chapter audio readings, for the car, a walk, or while the coffee brews

A complete PDF study guide with journal prompts, for when you want to sit with question two a little longer

5 quick-reference scripture guides to keep nearby

It is Luke 10 given a calendar: read the scene, say what it says, ask how you are reading it, go do the one thing.

Begin Your 30 Days Walking with Jesus

It is completely free. No payment, no card, no upsell — the words of Jesus should not sit behind a paywall, so there is nothing to buy and nothing that expires. You get instant access on any device, it is yours forever, and it takes under 10 minutes a day. You do not need to know more first. The man who knew the most was told the same thing you are being told: this do, and thou shalt live.

Questions People Are Asking

Q: Do I need to learn more about the Bible before starting a new believer Bible study?
A: No. In Luke 10:25-28, the man who questioned Jesus was a lawyer — in the Gospels that means a specialist in the law of Moses, someone who had already done all the study. He gave the right answer from memory, and Jesus told him, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live” (Luke 10:28, KJV). What he was missing was not more information. A beginner can start with one short scene about Jesus and one honest question about it on the very first day.

Q: What does “how readest thou” mean in Luke 10:26?
A: Luke 10:26 records Jesus replying to a question with two questions of His own: “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” (KJV). The first asks what the text says. The second asks about the reader — how the person is taking it in and what they are doing with it. It is a striking pairing, because elsewhere in the Gospels Jesus’s questions about reading ask whether people had read a passage at all, as in “Have ye not read what David did” (Matthew 12:3, KJV).

Q: Where should a new believer start reading the Bible?
A: Start with the life of Jesus in the Gospels rather than at Genesis 1, because the Gospels show you directly who you are getting to know. Read one scene at a time — five or six verses — instead of large chapter blocks, and stay in one Gospel long enough to get used to it. That gives you a clear picture of Jesus before you take on the harder books.

Q: How long should a new believer spend on Bible study each day?
A: Ten minutes a day, done regularly, does more than an occasional long session, because the point is building a rhythm you can actually keep rather than finishing a quantity of reading. A workable ten minutes looks like this: read one short scene, retell what happened in your own words, ask what it is asking of you today, and name one small thing to go and do.

Q: Is there a free new believer Bible study that walks through the life of Jesus?
A: Yes. 30 Days Walking with Jesus is a free, beginner-friendly plan that goes through the life of Jesus one day at a time in the Gospels. It includes 30 short devotional videos under 60 seconds each, 30 full-chapter audio readings, a complete PDF study guide with journal prompts, and 5 quick-reference scripture guides. It takes under 10 minutes a day, requires no payment and no card, and you can <a
