It is not the present. It is that you will not see their face when they open it. Somebody else’s living room, a phone call squeezed between other people’s Christmas, and a gift that has to do all the work from a thousand miles away.

Maybe it is a daughter spending her first Christmas in another country. A son on shift at the hospital. A father in a care home where visiting hours and Christmas Day refuse to line up. Kids at the other parent’s house this year. Choosing the gift is the easy part. Being absent on the day is the hard part, and no amount of wrapping paper fixes it.

So here is a different way to send a candle. Not as an object that arrives. As an appointment the two of you keep.

A Gift Arrives. A Moment Has to Be Arranged.

Anything you mail has the same weakness: it lands on a random afternoon, gets admired, gets set on a shelf, and the two of you are never actually in the same moment together. You imagine them opening it; they imagine you imagining it. A better gift does not close that gap. A shared time does. Which is why the most useful idea here is not a gift idea at all. It is a time and a direction, and it is very old.

The Bible’s Oldest Long-Distance Arrangement Was Set Up Before Anyone Needed It

When Solomon finished the temple, he prayed a long dedication prayer. Most of it is what you would expect. Then, in the middle, he does something strange: he starts praying for people who do not exist yet, in a situation that has not happened yet, asking God to listen to prayers made from a very long way off.

“And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:” (1 Kings 8:48, KJV)

On the best day in that building’s history, Solomon is making provision for the people who will not be able to come. Just a direction to face, and the promise that the prayer still arrives.

Generations later, somebody used it. Daniel had been carried off to Babylon as a young man, and when a law was passed that made praying a crime, this is what he did:

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.” (Daniel 6:10, KJV)

Here is the detail almost everyone reads straight past. The famous courageous act was not a gesture invented for the crisis. The verse says he prayed “as he did aforetime” — same direction, same three times a day, exactly as he always had. What held under pressure was an appointment he had been keeping for years.

Those set hours were ordinary, not heroic. “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray,” says Psalm 55:17. Centuries after Daniel, two of Jesus’ friends are still at it: “Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour” (Acts 3:1). Notice the two small words that matter for your Christmas: together, and the hour. Not an hour. The hour. Everybody knew which one.

Daniel could not be in the room either. What he had was a direction and a time — the two things distance cannot touch. You can give someone those this Christmas. The candle is simply what marks them.

Find the Verse That Fits

How to Give a Candle as an Appointment, Not an Ornament

Pick the hour before you send it. Choose the day and time yourself and put it in the card, so they are not handed a decision along with a present. “Sunday evenings at eight. I’ll light mine too.”

Agree on the moment, not the clock. If there are hours between you, write both down: “8pm yours, 1pm mine.” If the gap is enormous, pick the day instead of the minute.

Keep the same verse in both houses. This is what makes it feel like one room — a second candle if you want one, or that verse written on a card by your own sink.

Say what you will be praying. One sentence: “I’m going to be asking God to make your flat feel like home.” Now they know they are not holding up their end alone.

Let them off the hook in advance. Write that if they forget, or they are working, nothing is broken. An appointment with guilt attached stops being a gift.

And be clear about what the candle is, because this is where people get muddled. The wax is not doing anything. The flame is not a signal God needs in order to listen, and lighting it at the same second does not make a prayer stronger. It is a reminder with a time attached. The agreement does the work, and God hears both rooms at once without any help from a match.

A Prayer for the Hour You Agreed On

Write this in the card, so whoever lights their candle first has the words ready. It is shaped so both of you can pray it from two different rooms.

God, we are not in the same room tonight, and you are in both of them. Thank you for this person, and for the years that put us far apart without putting us out of reach. Be near them in the quiet after everyone leaves. Carry what I cannot carry from here. When they are lonely, let this small light say what I would say if I were in the chair across from them. Keep us both until we are at the same table again — and if the miles stay a long time, keep us anyway. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A shorter line for a gift tag: “Sunday at eight. I’ll be praying at the same time you are. Merry Christmas.”

The Candle That Already Has the Words on It

The hardest night is never Christmas Day. It is some evening in January, when the decorations are down and they are tired and they want to pray and cannot find a single word. That is the night this gift is actually for, and it is why the words on the glass matter more than the scent.

Every candle in the MyCandlePrayers scripture line carries a Bible verse on the front in faith-centered artwork, and on it a QR code that opens more than 100 written prayers sorted by need: strength, healing, peace, gratitude, guidance, protection. No app, no account, no subscription. So when their hour comes round and they have nothing to say, the prayer is already written and one scan away, sitting on their own table.

Pick the verse that fits the year they have had. God, Grant Me Serenity carries Philippians 4:7, for a mind that will not slow down. Fill Me With Hope, Lord carries Romans 15:13, for someone waiting on news. Give Me Courage, Lord carries Joshua 1:9, a good one for a first Christmas somewhere new. For the day itself, there are the Birth of Jesus candles. There is more on giving a Christmas candle with a prayer tied on if you want help reading the person on your list.

Each candle is 9 oz of soy wax with a 50 to 60 hour burn time in a reusable glass vessel — burned only for your agreed hour, once a week, that is roughly a year of them before the wax runs out, and then the glass stays. Candles ship to your door, so if you are sending one onward, check the shipping details on the page against where it needs to go.

If the distance you are dealing with is a funeral rather than a Christmas, these long distance sympathy gift ideas fit that week better. If the empty chair this year belongs to someone who died, start with this prayer for the first holiday without a loved one instead.

You cannot be at their table on the twenty-fifth. You can hand them a verse, a time, and the promise that somebody a thousand miles away is praying the same words at the same moment. Daniel made do with a direction and an open window. Choose the verse that fits them, and set the hour.

Choose Your Prayer Candle

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is a good Christmas candle gift for someone far away?
A: A candle suits a long-distance Christmas because it is small, it gets used rather than stored, and it can carry an arrangement rather than just a sentiment. Choose one whose words fit the year that person has had, then name a specific day and time in the card and tell them you will light yours at the same time. You can choose the verse that fits them rather than guessing at a scent.

Q: Is it superstitious for two people to light a candle at the same time?
A: No, as long as you are clear about what the candle is and is not. The wax and the flame have no power of their own, and lighting one does not make a prayer travel further or work better. What you are doing is keeping an agreed time to pray, an ordinary Christian practice with a long history: Psalm 55:17 says “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray,” and in Daniel 6:10 Daniel prayed three times a day toward Jerusalem while in exile in Babylon. The candle is a reminder with a time attached, not a mechanism.

Q: How do you pray at the same time across time zones?
A: Write both clock times in the card so nobody does arithmetic on the night: “8pm your time, 1pm mine.” If the gap is large enough that one of you would be asleep, agree on the day rather than the minute and overlap somewhere inside it. Keeping the appointment matters far more than keeping it to the second.

Q: What do you write on the card when you cannot be there at Christmas?
A: Keep it short and concrete rather than apologetic. Name the day and time you have chosen, say one specific thing you will be praying for them, and tell them plainly that if they miss it nothing is broken. For example: “Sunday evenings at eight, I’ll light mine too. I’m going to be asking God to make that flat feel like home. If you forget, no harm done.” Skip the long explanation of why you cannot be there; they already know.

            <div
