That Is What Makes It Hard.

The papers are on the table. You have read them until the words stopped landing, and the deadline has not moved an inch. A prayer for wisdom to make a decision usually gets prayed at exactly this hour — not because you lack information, but because you have plenty and it still will not resolve.

The hardest choices are rarely right against wrong. They are reasonable against reasonable.

The Word Behind “Upbraideth Not” Is the Word for Mockery

Scripture has one famous line for this, and most people quote half of it and stop.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5, KJV

Upbraideth is a word nobody uses at a bus stop, and that is a pity, because the Greek underneath is sharper than the English sounds. The verb is oneidizō — to reproach, to taunt, to rail at. Mark uses that same verb for the two men dying beside Jesus: “And they that were crucified with him reviled him” (Mark 15:32, KJV).

So James is not making the mild point that God is patient with questions. James is saying God will not do to you what that crowd did at the cross. No sneer. No “you should have worked this out by now.”

Then comes the part that stops people cold. “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering” (James 1:6, KJV), and two lines later, “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8, KJV). Plenty of readers reach that, decide they are disqualified, and close the book — wavering is the exact reason they opened it.

Look at what the wavering is about, though. The doubt in verse 6 is doubt about whether God gives at all — not uncertainty over which job, which city, which hospital. You can be completely unsure of your answer and completely settled about God’s generosity. James only asks you to settle the second one. The word he uses for wisdom is sophia, worth knowing on its own.

Paul Had Two Doors Shut Before One Opened

Acts 16 is the passage to sit with when you cannot choose, and it almost never gets used that way.

“Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.” — Acts 16:6-7, KJV

Two plans. Two refusals. They reach the coast by elimination — “And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas” (Acts 16:8, KJV) — and that night a vision arrives: a man of Macedonia asking for help.

Here is the line everyone reads past. After the vision, Luke writes that they “immediately… endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them” (Acts 16:10, KJV).

Assuredly gathering is one Greek word: symbibazontes, from sumbibazō, which means to bring things together — and so, to conclude. Luke uses the same verb for Saul in Damascus, “proving that this is very Christ” (Acts 9:22, KJV).

Read that again. Paul had a vision in the night, and Luke still describes the next move as putting pieces together and concluding. Even with the clearest signal in the book, somebody had to reason. Nobody was handed a map.

The same town turns up later with the opposite outcome. Writing about Troas, Paul says “a door was opened unto me of the Lord” — then, “I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia” (2 Corinthians 2:12-13, KJV). An open door he walked away from, without ever explaining why, and the account does not criticise him.

Between them, those two scenes dismantle what most of us are really waiting for. Not wisdom. Certainty. The king who prayed “neither know we what to do” never got a strategy either — what arrived was a direction and one day’s worth of road. Proverbs tells you to lean your whole weight on God and then, a chapter later, to go and get understanding anyway. Both are true at once.

Which is why the prayer in the video ends somewhere unexpected. It never asks for the answer. It asks, “whichever way I choose, walk it with me.” Company rather than certainty — a smaller request, and a far bigger one.

Actions to Take This Week

Write each option as one plain sentence on the same sheet of paper and read both aloud, because the one you have secretly already chosen tends to sound different in your own voice.

Name the fear sitting underneath the choice in a single written line, since “I am afraid of looking foolish” is something you can pray about and “I don’t know” is not.

Take the smallest reversible step toward one option today — one phone call, one email, one honest question — and notice what it does to the knot.

A Prayer for Wisdom to Make a Decision

God, I have turned this over so many times the edges are worn smooth, and I still do not know. Both roads look reasonable. Both could go wrong. I have asked everyone I trust, and now I am asking You. Give me wisdom I do not have on my own. Show me what I am not seeing. Amen.

Journal Prompts

Which option are you already leaning towards, and what would it cost you to say that out loud?

Whose approval have you quietly folded into this decision, and did you mean to?

If both roads turned out well, what would you still grieve about the one you did not take?

When has a choice you made badly still ended up somewhere good?

I keep waiting for God to hand me certainty. Paul got a vision and still had to put the pieces together himself. Nobody was handed a map.

#PrayerForWisdom #FaithAndDecisions #Acts16 #ChristianEncouragement #OneBreathPrayer

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for Wisdom to Make a Decision

What is a good short prayer for wisdom to make a decision?

A short prayer works best when it admits the real problem rather than dressing it up: that both options look reasonable and you cannot see which is right. Ask for wisdom you do not have, ask to be shown what you are missing, and ask God to come with you down whichever road you end up taking. James 1:5 is the warrant for asking plainly — anyone who lacks wisdom is invited to ask for it.

Does James 1:5 mean God will tell me which option to choose?

James 1:5 promises wisdom, which is not the same as being handed an answer. The verse says God gives “liberally, and upbraideth not” — generously, and without reproaching the person who asked. What usually arrives is the capacity to see the choice clearly, not a voice naming one of the two options.

Is it a lack of faith to feel unsure about a big decision?

No. The “wavering” James warns about in James 1:6 is doubt about whether God gives at all, not uncertainty about which school, job or treatment to choose. Being unsure of your answer and being settled about God’s character are two different things, and only the second one is being asked of you.

What does “assuredly gathering” mean in Acts 16:10?

“Assuredly gathering” translates the Greek symbibazontes, from sumbibazō, which means to bring things together and so to infer or conclude. Luke uses the same verb in Acts 9:22 for Saul “proving” his case in Damascus. The striking part is where it sits — straight after a night vision. Even then, Paul and his companions had to reason their way to the conclusion that God was calling them to Macedonia.

Does an open door always mean it is God’s will?

Not according to Paul. In 2 Corinthians 2:12-13 he describes arriving at Troas, where “a door was opened unto me of the Lord,” and then leaving anyway because he had no rest in his spirit and could not find Titus. An opportunity standing open is real information, but Scripture does not treat it as an instruction that overrides everything else.

The Papers Will Still Be on the Table Tomorrow

They will. The deadline is real, but the person who has to meet it does not have to be certain first — only honest, and willing to move.

Paul kept walking while he did not know. Two doors closed before one opened, and even the vision left him reasoning. Not knowing what to do has never meant you are weak. Usually it means this one matters.

If you are sitting with a decision right now, leave a comment and say what you are weighing — not for advice, just so it is said out loud. Someone reading this is holding the same two roads.

Watch One Breath Prayer for Wisdom to Make
