It was first spoken to a man who had just been handed the job of the most celebrated leader the nation had ever had, while that nation was still in mourning. If you have gone looking for a prayer for the first day at a new job, that detail is worth more than the mug is — because the verse was built for exactly this, and not for a general feeling of positivity.

The prayer above runs forty-eight seconds. What follows is the part it had no room for.

Two Words That Do Not Mean “Cheer Up”

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” — Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

English flattens this. “Be not afraid” translates arats, which Brown-Driver-Briggs glosses as “cause to tremble, tremble” and Strong’s renders with phrases like “shake terribly.” It is a word about the body, not the mood. “Neither be thou dismayed” translates chathath, and both lexicons put breaking first: Strong’s has “properly, to prostrate; hence, to break down,” and Brown-Driver-Briggs heads the entry “be shattered, dismayed,” noting its literal use of bows snapping.

So the two things forbidden are shaking and shattering. Not nerves. Nothing in Joshua 1:9 says your stomach should be calm on a first morning.

The positive half is physical too. “Be strong” is chazaq. Strong’s puts “to fasten upon” at the root and treats strength and courage as extensions of it; Brown-Driver-Briggs leads with firmness and lists grasping as a separate major sense. The lexicons genuinely disagree about which came first, which is worth saying plainly rather than picking the tidier answer. Either way the word sits nearer to holding on than to feeling brave — and that is a different word again from oz, the Hebrew word for strength as sheer power.

Which leaves a problem the verse does not hide. Nobody can be ordered into feeling courageous. But a person can be told to hold on and keep walking, and that is much closer to what the Hebrew is actually doing.

He Had Walked Through That Door Once Before. It Nearly Killed Him.

Joshua was not facing an unknown country. Forty years earlier he had gone into it as one of the scouts, and he came back convinced. He and Caleb told the crowd it was “an exceeding good land” (Numbers 14:7). The crowd’s answer is one line long:

“But all the congregation bade stone them with stones.” — Numbers 14:10 (KJV)

That is the man standing at the Jordan in chapter one. His first-day dread was not ignorance. It was memory. He had been in that room before, said the honest thing, and watched people reach for rocks.

Now count who tells him to be strong. Moses says it to him out loud, in front of everyone, in Deuteronomy 31:7. God says it in Deuteronomy 31:23. It comes three more times in the opening chapter of Joshua — verses 6, 7 and 9. Then, at the close of that chapter, the people say it back to him (Joshua 1:18). Six times, from three directions.

Nobody repeats a thing six times to someone who is fine.

There is one more line, easy to read straight past, that answers the exact thing the prayer in the video asks for. The prayer says: Go in ahead of me. Deuteronomy 31:8 had already settled it:

“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” — Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV)

The request had been granted before it was ever made. And the comparison problem gets answered head-on as well — “as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee” (Joshua 1:5). Joshua’s real dread was never the river. It was that every person in that camp had known the last one to hold this job.

Actions to Take This Week

Decide tonight on the exact words you will use tomorrow when you are lost, so you are not inventing a sentence while your stomach is in knots.

Write down every name you are given before you leave the building, because forgetting them is what makes day two harder than day one.

Set a reminder for tomorrow evening carrying one question — where was God in today? — and answer it before you sleep.

A Prayer for the First Day at a New Job

God, I am standing outside a building I do not know, and my body knows it before my mind does. Go in ahead of me. Steady my hands and slow my voice. Let me ask the question I would rather not ask, and let me be patient with myself while I learn where everything is. Keep me from coming apart over small things today. And tonight, when the building is quiet and I am home, show me where You were in it. Amen.

Journal Prompts

Whose shoes are you stepping into, and what have you already been told about them?

When you picture tomorrow going badly, what is the specific moment you see?

Where have you already survived a first day you were certain you would not?

What would it look like to be patient with yourself for the first month, not just the first morning?

Six different voices told Joshua to be strong before he walked in. Nobody says it six times to someone who is fine.

#FirstDayNerves #NewJob #Joshua19 #FaithAtWork #PrayerForCourage

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for My First Day at a New Job

What is a good prayer for the first day at a new job?

A short one you can actually say in a car park. Ask for three concrete things — a clear head, a steady voice, and the nerve to ask when you are lost — rather than asking for the whole day to go well. The one-breath prayer on this page is built for the gap between the car park and the door.

What does Joshua 1:9 mean?

It is a command given to Joshua as he took over from Moses, and it pairs an order with a reason: hold firm, do not tremble or come apart, because God is with you wherever you go. The Hebrew words behind “afraid” and “dismayed” describe shaking and breaking rather than ordinary nervousness, so the verse is not a promise that you will feel calm.

Who was Joshua 1:9 originally spoken to?

Joshua, son of Nun, immediately after the death of Moses (Joshua 1:1-2). He was taking command of a nation from its most celebrated leader, which is why Joshua 1:5 says “as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee” — the comparison was the part that stung.

Is it normal to feel sick before starting a new job?

Common enough that Joshua 1:9, the verse people reach for when they need nerve, was first given to someone in that exact position, with the charge repeated to him six separate times. A knotted stomach and shallow breathing are a body reacting to an unfamiliar room, not evidence that you have made a mistake.

What does “be not dismayed” mean in Hebrew?

It translates chathath, which Strong’s defines as “properly, to prostrate; hence, to break down,” and which Brown-Driver-Briggs heads as “be shattered, dismayed.” The picture is of something snapping under load — Brown-Driver-Briggs cites its literal use of bows. “Do not come apart” is closer to the sense than “do not worry.”

One More Breath, Then the Door

The prayer ends by telling you to take one more breath and go on in. That is not a motivational flourish. It is close to what Joshua was told at the edge of his own river — a man with the memory of a crowd reaching for stones, a dead predecessor everyone still talked about, and water in front of him. He was told six times to hold on, and once, before he ever asked for it, that someone had already gone in ahead.

If tomorrow is your first day, you are not the first person to stand outside a door and have to make yourself open it. Scripture has a great deal to say about beginnings — and if this is not your first fresh start but your fourth, the particular weariness of starting over gets its own honest treatment.

Tell us in the comments what you are walking into this week.
