But nobody asks what Sunday actually looks like from where you are standing.

Maybe nothing is within an hour of you. Maybe you work Sundays. Maybe the nearest building is one you walked out of years ago and cannot make yourself walk back into. Maybe you are the only believer in your house, and arriving alone at a door full of people who all seem to know each other is enough on its own. Whatever the reason, you said yes to Jesus, you have no congregation, and underneath it sits a quiet worry that you cannot properly start until that part is solved.

You can. Luke wrote down exactly where the first missionary to Europe went on the sabbath when the usual building was not an option, and it is smaller and far more reachable than you would guess.

Take the First Step

Paul’s habit was the synagogue. In Philippi he went to a riverbank.

Luke is matter-of-fact about Paul’s usual pattern: arrive in a city, find the synagogue, start there — “And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them” (Acts 17:2). Then he reaches Philippi, and the routine is not available:

“And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.” — Acts 16:13

Read it slowly, because everything in it is smaller than you expect. Out of the city, not into a sacred district. By a river side. Where prayer was wont to be made — old English for where people were in the habit of praying. No building. No leader named. No service begins. A few women met at a riverbank because that is where they had got used to meeting, and Paul sat down on the ground with them and talked.

Luke never says Philippi had no synagogue. He only tells us where Paul went instead: a spot by the water with a praying habit attached to it. That was the entire infrastructure.

That riverbank became a living room

One of the women listening was a fabric trader from another city — “a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira” (Acts 16:14). She was baptised, then argued Paul’s team into staying at her place; Luke says simply, “she constrained us” (Acts 16:15). A few paragraphs later Paul and Silas have been jailed, beaten and released, and Luke notes where they went on the way out of town:

“And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.” — Acts 16:40

Notice the word brethren. Plural. There is now a group of believers in Philippi, and the address Luke gives for them is somebody’s house. Between the riverbank and that sentence, nobody built, rented or organised anything. People met, and that was the church. Years later Paul wrote them a letter we still read, and it is one of the warmest things in the Bible.

Four of Paul’s greetings name a church by whose house it met in

You can check every one of these:

“greet the church that is in their house” — Romans 16:5, Priscilla and Aquila

“with the church that is in their house” — 1 Corinthians 16:19, the same couple again

“Nymphas, and the church which is in his house” — Colossians 4:15, in Laodicea

“and to the church in thy house” — Philemon 1:2, to Philemon and Archippus

Four greetings, four churches, four front doors. The word our Bibles translate as church is not a word for a building — it means an assembly of people, which is why it sits inside somebody’s house without sounding odd to anyone writing or reading these letters. So the thing you are missing is real and it matters. But it is not a postcode. It is people.

The smallest number Jesus put on it was two

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” — Matthew 18:20

Be fair to the passage: Jesus says this inside instructions about settling a disagreement between believers, not as a formula for planting a congregation, and that is worth knowing before you quote it at anybody. But the number he reached for is still the number. Two. Not twenty, not a building full. Which means your first move is not a search for an institution. It is one message to one person.

What to do this week, with no church to go to

Keep the daily thing going anyway. Reading does not wait on the room. Ten minutes in one Gospel, at a size you would still manage on a bad morning — reading one Gospel twice in a month is built for exactly this, and it needs nobody’s permission.

Find your one person. Not a mentor, not a pastor. One believer you can message honestly — a cousin, an old friend, someone at work you half suspect. Ask them to read the same chapter and talk about it once a week. That is two, and two is the smallest real church in the New Testament.

Read it out loud when you are alone. Almost nobody in the Bible read silently, and hearing the words in your own voice makes a room with one person in it feel markedly less empty.

Take the imperfect option you can reach. A service forty minutes away you make twice a month. A midweek group when Sunday is impossible. A livestream, counted honestly for what it is: real teaching, and genuinely not the same as being in the room.

Lower the bar for a first visit. You are not choosing a church for life. You are going once, sitting near the back and leaving. Ask the one Christian you already know where they go and arrive together — walking in beside somebody is a different experience entirely from walking in alone.

One honest counterweight, because the Bible does not leave this open: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is” (Hebrews 10:25). Gathering is not extra credit. None of the above is permission to stop looking. It is what you do in the meantime — and the meantime is allowed to be long.

Something to walk through while you look

You can assemble all of this yourself, and if you do, it works. Pick Mark. Ten minutes. Message one person this week.

What that will not do is sit beside you at 6:40 and tell you what you just read. That gap — not the reading, the meaning of the reading — is the one a church normally fills for a new believer, and it is the one you are feeling most right now. It is also what 30 Days Walking with Jesus was built to close. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time, in order, so you are never standing there deciding what comes next. Each day carries a short devotional video of under a minute and a full-chapter audio reading — a voice in the room, which is not nothing when you are doing this alone — plus a PDF study guide of journal prompts and five quick-reference scripture guides for finding something fast.

Under ten minutes a day, and it ends: thirty days, and you will have finished something. It is free — no payment, no card, no expiration and no upsell on the other side — because the words of Jesus should not sit behind a paywall. Access is instant on any device, and it is yours to keep. It will not replace the room. It will keep you walking until you find one.

Paul sat down on a riverbank with a few people who had no building, and what started there outlasted the city. You have a Gospel, a phone and thirty mornings. That is already more than Lydia had the day her heart was opened.

Start Walking with Jesus – Day 1

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What should I do as a new Christian without a church?
A: Start with the parts that need no building, and keep looking for people at the same time. Read one Gospel daily in a portion small enough to manage on a bad morning, read it out loud when you are alone, and find one other believer you can message honestly and read alongside — in Matthew 18:20 the number Jesus names is two or three, not a full room. Take whatever imperfect gathering you can actually reach. Hebrews 10:25 warns against giving up on gathering altogether, so this is what you do while you search, not instead of searching.

Q: Can you be a Christian without going to church?
A: The New Testament never treats gathering as optional — Hebrews 10:25 says “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together” — but it also never uses the word translated “church” to mean a building. It means an assembly of people. Four of Paul’s greetings identify a church by the house it met in: Romans 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:19, Colossians 4:15 and Philemon 1:2. So the real question is less about an address and more about whether you are connected to other believers at all — and that can start with one person rather than an institution.

Q: Where did the first church in Philippi meet?
A: By a river, and then in a house. Acts 16:13 says that on the sabbath Paul and his companions “went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made,” sat down, and spoke with the women who gathered there. One of them, Lydia, a seller of purple from Thyatira, believed and was baptised, then pressed them to stay at her home (Acts 16:14-15). By Acts 16:40, after Paul and Silas were released from prison, they went to Lydia’s house and saw “the brethren” there — a group of believers meeting at a private address.

Q: How do I find a church when I do not know anyone?
A: Lower the stakes on the first visit. You are not choosing a church for life; you are going once, sitting near the back and leaving, and nobody expects you to know the routine. If you know even one Christian, ask where they go and arrive together, because walking in beside somebody is a completely different experience from walking in alone. Midweek groups are often easier to enter than a Sunday service, being smaller and built around conversation. If nothing is reachable yet, start with one other believer and a shared chapter.

Q: Is there a free plan for a new Christian with no church?
A: Yes. 30 Days Walking with Jesus walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time and is free — no payment, no card required, no expiration and no upsell. It includes 30 short devotional videos of under a minute each, 30 full-chapter audio readings, a PDF study guide with journal prompts, and five quick-reference scripture guides. It takes under ten minutes a day, access is instant on any device, and it is yours to keep. It does not replace meeting with other believers, but it gives you a path to walk while you look for them.

            <div
