Or the job is gone. Or she has been carrying something for months that she will not quite name, and tonight she cried in the car and said it was nothing. Now she is asleep, and you are lying next to her in the dark wondering what you are even supposed to say to God about it.

If you are looking for a prayer for my wife, there is one at the bottom of this page that you can pray tonight, word for word. But first, there is a husband in Genesis who prayed for his wife, and the way the Bible tells his story changes what that kind of prayer is.

A Prayer for My Wife Starts With a Verse That Covers Twenty Years

Isaac is one of the quiet men of the Bible. When he marries Rebekah, Genesis says it plainly: “and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death” (Genesis 24:67). A grieving man loved his wife, and she was a comfort to him.

Then a hard thing arrives. They cannot have children. Here is the whole of what the Bible says about how Isaac answered it:

“And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” (Genesis 25:21)

It reads like a quick prayer and a quick answer. Look at the verses on either side of it, though. Verse 20 says “Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife.” Verse 26 says “Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.” Threescore is sixty.

So that one short verse holds about twenty years. Twenty years of asking for the same thing for the same woman. Genesis does not tell us how many times he prayed, what he said, or how many years went by with no answer. It just folds two decades into a single sentence.

That matters if you have been praying for your wife for a long time and nothing seems to move. Long waiting is not a sign that you are praying wrong. One of the first husbands in the Bible recorded praying for his wife waited a very long time too.

What Most People Miss: Rebekah Prayed Too

The answer came, and it was not easy. Rebekah was carrying twins, and the pregnancy was hard. The very next verse says:

“And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.” (Genesis 25:22)

Notice what happens there. Isaac had prayed for her. But when the trouble was in her own body, Rebekah did not send her husband to ask. She went herself. And God answered her directly: “And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb” (Genesis 25:23).

That is the part a husband can miss. Praying for your wife is not praying instead of her. Isaac’s prayer did not replace Rebekah’s own conversation with God. If anything, it came before it. He carried her to God for years, and then she walked in and asked her own question.

So a good prayer for your wife does not try to speak for her. It asks God to meet her where she is, in her own words and her own fears, even the ones she has not told you yet.

The Verse That Ties a Husband’s Prayers to How He Treats His Wife

The New Testament adds one more piece. Peter writes to husbands:

“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” (1 Peter 3:7)

The phrase “weaker vessel” trips many readers up, and Bible teachers do not all explain it the same way. But look at what surrounds it. The wife is to be given honour. She is called an heir together with her husband, an equal sharer in the same grace. And then the verse ends with prayer.

Peter links the way a husband lives with his wife and the way his prayers go. “Dwell with them according to knowledge” means living with her as someone who actually knows her: what scares her, what tires her, what she is carrying today. You cannot pray well for a person you have stopped paying attention to.

Put Isaac and Peter side by side and a picture forms. A prayer for my wife is not a speech. It is twenty years of showing up for one person, learning who she is, and handing her to God again and again, while leaving room for her to talk to God herself.

If your marriage feels more distant than you want to admit, read the Bible’s most honest portrait of being lonely in marriage. Just let her know she was carried.

Journal Prompts

What is your wife carrying right now that you have not asked her about?

Where have you been trying to pray for her in place of letting her bring it to God herself?

What prayer for her have you stopped praying because it has taken so long?

A Prayer for My Wife

God, thank you for my wife. You know what she is carrying tonight better than I do, even the parts she has not told me. Meet her right there, in her own words and her own fears, and let her hear from you directly. Teach me to really know her, to honour her, and to keep showing up for her even when the answer is slow. I am putting her in your hands again tonight, and I will do it again tomorrow. Amen.

Discussion Question

Isaac’s twenty years of praying fit into one verse of Genesis. Why do you think the Bible so often leaves out the long waiting parts of people’s stories? Genesis fits all of it into one verse. If you’ve been praying for yours a long time, keep going.

Praying for my wife isn’t praying instead of her. It’s carrying her to God until she can walk in and ask her own question.

#PrayerForMyWife #MarriagePrayer #Genesis25 #PrayingHusband

Q&A: Prayer for My Wife

What is a short prayer for my wife?

A short prayer for a wife can be simple and honest: “God, thank you for my wife. Meet her in whatever she is carrying today, teach me to know her and honour her, and keep her close to you. Amen.” It thanks God for her, asks God to meet her directly, and asks for the husband’s own faithfulness too.

Who in the Bible prayed for his wife?

Isaac is the clearest example of a husband in the Bible praying for his wife. Genesis 25:21 says, “And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” Genesis 25:20 and 25:26 show that Isaac was forty when he married Rebekah and sixty when their twins were born.

How long did Isaac pray for Rebekah?

The Bible does not say exactly how long Isaac prayed for Rebekah, but the dates around his prayer suggest a long wait. Genesis 25:20 says Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, and Genesis 25:26 says he was sixty when Esau and Jacob were born. That leaves about twenty years between the wedding and the answer.

What Bible verse should a husband pray for his wife?

1 Peter 3:7 is a good verse for a husband to pray over his marriage, because it connects how he treats his wife with his own prayers: “giving honour unto the wife … as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” It calls the wife an equal heir of God’s grace alongside her husband.

Should I pray for my wife or with my wife?

Both have a place. In Genesis 25, Isaac prayed for his wife Rebekah, and later Rebekah “went to enquire of the LORD” herself when her pregnancy was hard. A husband’s prayers for his wife do not replace her own prayers. Asking a wife what she would like prayed for, and then praying it, joins the two together.

Back to the Dark Bedroom

She is still asleep. Thursday is still coming. You do not have to find perfect words tonight. Isaac’s words are not even recorded, only that he kept asking.

Put your hand on her shoulder, say her name to God, and hand her over. Tomorrow, ask her what she wants you to pray. Then keep going, for as long as it takes.

If you are praying for your wife tonight, leave her first name in the comments. Other readers will pray for her by name, too.

                <div
