It appears more than 130 times, and almost every time it means more than being alive – it means the life that belongs to God and is given through Jesus: “In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4). It is the “life” in “eternal life,” and in John 10:10’s “life… more abundantly.” The New Testament has a second word for life, bios (G979), for ordinary existence and the money you live on – and the gap between the two is the whole point of this study.

Word Study: Where It Comes From

Zoe comes from the verb zao (G2198), “to live.” At root it simply names the fact of being alive – the difference between a living thing and a dead one. You still hear it in the girl’s name Zoe, and the very first person to carry that name was Eve. When Jewish scholars translated the Old Testament into Greek, they rendered Genesis 3:20 – “Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living” – by calling her Zoe. The mother of all living was named Life.

Here is the surprise. In everyday classical Greek, zoe was the plainer of the two words for life. Animals, plants and people all had zoe – it was the bare animal fact of breathing. The word for a human life, with a story and a shape and a career, was bios. That is why we still write a “biography”: a bios is a life you can tell from beginning to end. As the 19th-century scholar Richard Trench pointed out in his Synonyms of the New Testament, the Greek world ranked bios as the nobler word.

The New Testament turns that ranking upside down. Its writers almost never use bios for anything spiritual – it stays down at the level of livelihood, possessions and “the affairs of this life” (2 Timothy 2:4). Meanwhile zoe, the plain word for being alive, gets lifted to the top of the language. It becomes the word for the life God has in God’s own self, the life the Son carries, and the life given to anyone who belongs to Christ. John’s writings alone use it dozens of times. The humble word for “breathing” became the word for what God breathes into us.

That reversal is worth sitting with. The world measured a life by its story – what you did, what you owned, how you’ll be remembered. The New Testament measures it by something underneath the story: whether you are actually alive with the life that comes from God. A person can have an impressive bios and very little zoe. And a person with almost nothing to put in a biography can be overflowing with it.

Where This Word Appears in the Bible

Reference

KJV Text

What the word is doing

John 1:4

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Zoe as something the Word possesses in Himself, not something He received

John 10:10

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

The reason Jesus came: zoe, and more of it than you can measure

John 14:6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Life is not just a gift Jesus gives – it is who He is

John 17:3

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

The only place Jesus defines eternal zoe – and the definition is knowing God

Colossians 3:4

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

Christ is not just the source of your life – Paul calls Him your life

The “life” in John 3:16’s “everlasting life” is zoe too. The adjective in front of it, aionios, has its own story – we unpack it in What Does Eternal Life Mean in John 3:16?

Verse Deep Dive: John 10:10-11, Two Words for Life in Two Verses

Read these two sentences together, the way Jesus said them:

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:10-11)

In English, “life” appears twice and sounds like the same thing. In Greek it is two different words. The life Jesus came to give in verse 10 is zoe. The life He lays down in verse 11 is psyche (G5590) – His own natural, bodily, breathing human life, the life that can be lost. The verses sit side by side on purpose. The Shepherd spends His psyche so the sheep can have zoe. He gives up the life that can die to hand over the life that can’t. A few verses later He makes it explicit: “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish” (John 10:28) – zoe again.

Now look at “more abundantly.” The word is perissos – overflowing, more than enough, beyond what’s needed. This verse gets quoted a lot as a promise of a fuller bank account or a more comfortable life. But notice which word for life it uses. If Jesus had meant possessions and lifestyle, bios was sitting right there. He chose zoe. The overflow is in the life itself, not in the stuff around it.

Jesus said the same thing the other way round in Luke 12:15: “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” That “life” is also zoe, and “abundance” there comes from the same root as John 10:10’s “abundantly.” Put the two verses next to each other and the teaching is clear: abundant things cannot make abundant life. Only the Shepherd can – and He paid for it with His own psyche.

And notice what comes first in verse 10: the thief who comes “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” The contrast is not between a poor life and a rich one. It is between something that takes life and Someone who gives it.

Not All “Life” Is the Same

English uses one word, “life,” for three quite different Greek words. Knowing which one sits under your English Bible changes what the verse is saying:

Zoe (G2222) – life itself. The life God has and gives. “He that hath the Son hath life” (1 John 5:12). This is the word for eternal life, abundant life, and the life that is “the light of men.”

Bios (G979) – the life you live on. Your livelihood, your means, the span and business of earthly existence. It appears only about ten times in the New Testament. The widow “cast in all that she had, even all her living” (Mark 12:44) – her whole bios. The woman with the issue of blood “had spent all her living upon physicians” (Luke 8:43). And John warns against “the pride of life” (1 John 2:16) – pride in your bios, your possessions and status.

Psyche (G5590) – the life that can be lost. Your natural self, the breath-and-blood life of a person. “Whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:25). This is the life the Shepherd lays down in John 10:11.

The parable of the prodigal son shows bios and zoe in the same story. The younger son asks for his share and the father “divided unto them his living” (Luke 15:12) – his bios. The son spends it all. But when he comes home, the father says, “this my son was dead, and is alive again” (Luke 15:24) – and “alive again” comes from zao, the verb behind zoe. He lost his whole bios and came home to life.

For the Old Testament side of this word, see our study of the Hebrew word for life, chayyim.

Why the Original Word Changes the Meaning

Most of us hear “eternal life” as a length – a life that simply never ends, starting after you die. Knowing that the word is zoe adds the other half: it is a kind of life, God’s own life, and it can start now. Jesus’ own definition in John 17:3 doesn’t mention time at all: “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God.” Eternal life is not mainly a place you go later. It is Someone you know today.

It also untangles a common confusion about “abundant life.” If the promise were about bios, then a Christian who is poor, sick or struggling would be living proof the promise failed. Because the promise is about zoe, the widow who gave away her last coins – her entire bios – may have been one of the most alive people in the Temple that day.

And it changes how you hear “Christ, who is our life” (Colossians 3:4). Paul didn’t say Christ is a part of your life, or the most important thing in your schedule. Schedules are bios. He said Christ is your zoe – the life underneath all the rest of it.

Living It Out

Try a simple sorting exercise this week. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, write what fills your bios: job, bills, calendar, the things you own and worry about. On the other, write the moments you actually felt alive with God – a prayer that landed, a kindness, a quiet walk where you sensed you weren’t alone. Notice which column gets most of your attention, and which one Jesus said He came to give.

Then take John 17:3 at its word. If eternal life is knowing God, it can grow in ordinary hours – five honest minutes of prayer in the car count. You don’t have to wait for heaven to start living the zoe kind of life.

Journal Prompts

In John 10:10-11, the Shepherd gives up His psyche so you can have zoe. It appears more than 130 times in the New Testament and usually means the life that comes from God, including eternal life. Two other Greek words are also translated “life”: bios (livelihood, earthly existence) and psyche (natural life, soul).

What is the difference between zoe and bios?

Zoe is life itself – in the New Testament, the life of God given through Jesus. Bios is the life you live on: your livelihood, possessions and the span of earthly existence. The widow in Mark 12:44 gave “all her living” – her bios. Jesus came to give zoe (John 10:10).

Does “abundant life” in John 10:10 mean wealth or prosperity?

No. The verse uses zoe, not bios, the word tied to possessions and livelihood. And in Luke 12:15 Jesus says plainly that a person’s zoe “consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” The abundance is in the quality of life with God, not in material things.

Is the name Zoe from the Bible?

Yes, in a sense. Zoe is the Greek word for life, and in the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint), Eve’s name in Genesis 3:20 is rendered Zoe, because she was “the mother of all living.”

<script async data-uid="6491fb8269" src="https://bgodinspired.kit.com/6491fb8269/index.js"
