That Was the Wrong Way Round.

You came over to help. Ten minutes later your friend is the one filling the kettle, finding a clean mug, asking if you still take sugar, because doing something with their hands is easier than sitting still with what happened.

And you let them, because you didn’t know what else to do either.

If you are looking for a prayer for a grieving friend, you are probably somewhere near that kitchen. You love this person. Every sentence you try sounds too small. The prayer in the Short above says the honest thing out loud: “my friend is broken and I cannot fix it.” This page is about why that sentence is not a failure, and about the one person in the Gospels who asked his friends for exactly what yours needs.

What Psalm 34:18 Promises, and What It Doesn’t Ask of You

The Short closes on one verse:

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18, KJV)

The Hebrew is blunter than the English. “Nigh” is qarov, simply “near,” close enough to touch. “Broken” comes from shavar, the verb for shattering pottery or snapping a bone. And “contrite” translates a word built on dakka, crushed, ground down, pressed low. In church English “contrite” sounds like an apology. In this verse it describes a person flattened by something heavier than they are.

Read slowly, the verse also says what it does not say. It does not promise that the right friend will find the right words. The nearness belongs to God. That is the quiet relief inside the Short’s line “be near them where I cannot reach.” There are rooms in your friend’s grief you will never get into: the 4am ones, the moment they reach for the phone to call the person who is gone. You were never meant to be the presence in those rooms.

Here is the tension, though. Psalm 34 has a heading that ties it to David’s escape from a Philistine king in 1 Samuel 21:10-15, when he pretended to be mad to get out alive and was driven away. He wrote “the LORD is nigh” as a man with no friend in the room. The verse is true without us. And yet scripture never lets that become an excuse to stay home. “Weep with them that weep” (Romans 12:15) is a command to show up, and notice what it asks for. Not wisdom. Weeping.

What Most People Miss: Jesus Asked His Friends to Stay, Not to Fix

The night before he died, Jesus took Peter, James and John a little apart in Gethsemane and told them the truth about himself: “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me” (Matthew 26:38).

He didn’t ask them for a plan. He didn’t ask for a verse. He asked them to stay awake near him.

They fell asleep. Three times. “What, could ye not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). Luke adds a detail almost everyone reads past: Jesus “found them sleeping for sorrow” (Luke 22:45). They were not careless. They were overwhelmed by their own grief, and it put them under.

Then, an hour later, when the soldiers arrived, Peter finally did something. He drew a sword and cut off a servant’s ear (John 18:10). He slept through the moment that asked for stillness and swung a blade in the moment that asked for none.

That is the pattern the Short names when it prays, “when I want to fix this more for me than for them, keep me in the room anyway.” The urge to fix usually shows up in one of three shapes:

Explaining: reaching for a reason, a verse, a bigger purpose, so the loss makes sense to you.

Organising: jumping to meals, paperwork and schedules, which helps, but can also be a way of leaving the room while still standing in it.

Brightening: steering toward a good memory or a hopeful thought before your friend is ready to go there.

None of these are wicked. Peter loved Jesus. But each one quietly moves the attention from your friend’s pain to your discomfort with it. If you want the longer practical guide to words that help and words that sting, our article on what to say to someone who is grieving covers it. The prayer here is about something underneath the words: asking to be kept in the room.

And the most hopeful part of Gethsemane is what Jesus did with friends who failed him. He came back to them. Every time. The New Testament’s word for comfort, paraklesis, literally means one called alongside. Not one who explains. One who comes and stays.

Actions to Take This Week

Sit with your friend for twenty minutes today without offering a single explanation, plan or silver lining, and let the silence be theirs to break.

Say the name of the person who died out loud in your next conversation, because grieving people often notice everyone else has stopped using it.

Put a reminder in your phone for one month from now to check in again, when most of the cards and visits have quietly stopped.

A Prayer for a Grieving Friend

God, my friend is carrying something I cannot lift, and I keep wanting to make it lighter so I can breathe easier. Forgive me for that. Be near them in the places I cannot go: the long nights, the empty chair, the moment they forget and then remember. Make me someone who stays. Keep me awake when they need company and quiet when they need silence. When I fall asleep on the watch, as the disciples did, wake me and send me back. Let them feel You close, even through me. Amen.

Journal Prompts

When I am near someone else’s pain, what do I most want to do with my hands or my mouth, and who is that urge really for?

Who sat with me in a hard season without trying to fix it, and what did that feel like?

What would it look like for me to trust God with the parts of my friend’s grief I cannot reach?

Is there anyone I stopped checking on once the funeral was over?

“You don’t have to say anything wise to your grieving friend tonight. Just stay. The nearness is God’s job. The staying is yours.”

#Grief #PrayerForAFriend #Psalm3418 #Comfort #Friendship

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for My Grieving Friend

How do I pray for a friend who just lost someone?

Pray simply and specifically: ask God to be near your friend in the hours you cannot be there, to give them sleep, and to give you the patience to stay without fixing. Psalm 34:18 says “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart,” so you are asking God to do what God has already promised to do.

What Bible verse can I send to a grieving friend?

Psalm 34:18 is one of the gentlest because it asks nothing of the grieving person; it only promises that God is near the broken-hearted. Send it on its own, without explaining it, and without adding “everything happens for a reason.”

Is it okay to say nothing to someone who is grieving?

Yes, as long as you are present while you say nothing. Romans 12:15 tells Christians to “weep with them that weep,” which is a call to share the sorrow, not to resolve it. A quiet “I’m so sorry, I’m here” is usually enough.

What does “contrite spirit” mean in Psalm 34:18?

The Hebrew word behind “contrite” comes from dakka, meaning crushed or pressed low. In Psalm 34:18 it describes someone flattened by sorrow, not only someone feeling guilty, which is why the verse speaks so directly to people in grief.

What did Jesus ask of his friends when he was grieving?

In Gethsemane Jesus told Peter, James and John, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me” (Matthew 26:38). He asked them to stay awake and stay near, not to solve anything, which is a helpful model for supporting a grieving friend today.

Back to the Kitchen

Next time you are in that kitchen, let your friend fill the kettle if they need to. Then take the mug, sit down, and don’t get up again. You do not have to have anything wise to say. The Short ends with the best advice on this page: “Just stay.”

If you are walking with someone through loss right now, tell us their first name in the comments. We will pray for them, and for you, by name. And if the grief is your own, our prayer for grief was written for you.

Watch <a
