The lights were off. You could see him from the kitchen window, just sitting there with his hands on the wheel. When he finally came in he said he was fine, and you both knew he wasn’t.

If you are looking for a prayer for my husband going through a hard time, the one in the Short above says two things most prayers for a husband skip. The first is “I can’t fix it, and trying has worn me thin.” The second is the last request, which is not for him at all: “give me the patience to stay.” This page is about the space between those two lines.

A Prayer for My Husband Going Through a Hard Time Starts With Two Kinds of Burden

Read Galatians 6 closely and it seems to argue with itself. Verse 2 says “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Three verses later, verse 5 says “For every man shall bear his own burden.”

Which is it?

Both, because Paul uses two different Greek words. In verse 2 the word is baros, a weight. It is the word the vineyard workers use in Matthew 20:12 when they complain they “have borne the burden and heat of the day.” It means a heaviness that presses down on a person. In verse 5 the word is phortion, a load that belongs to someone. Luke uses it in Acts 27:10 for a ship’s cargo, which the King James calls its “lading.”

Commentators do not all draw the line in exactly the same place, but most read the two verses together like this. Some of what your husband is carrying is weight, and weight can be shared. Some of it is his own load, and nobody can carry that for him. That includes his own grief, his own choices and his own honest conversation with God.

Here is the hard part, and fifty seconds had no room for it. “Trying has worn me thin” often means you have been trying to carry his load and not just the weight. You can sit under the heaviness with him. You can cook, answer the phone and take the children out so the house is quiet. What you cannot do is grieve for him, decide for him or find his hope for him. Trying to do that is what wears a wife thin.

Then there is a detail that changes how the whole passage reads. Phortion, the load Galatians says each person carries, is the same word Jesus uses in Matthew 11:30: “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” The load you cannot carry for your husband is the one load Jesus offers to carry with him. You were never meant to be the only one under it.

If what you are seeing looks less like a bad season and more like a man who has stopped getting out of bed, our prayer for depression sits with exactly that. If he is still going to work while coming apart inside, read what quiet cracking looks like. And if he ever talks about not wanting to be here, do not carry that alone either. Call a doctor or your local crisis line that same day.

What Most People Miss: Job’s Wife Was Worn Thin Too

Job’s wife gets one line in the whole book, and centuries of bad press for it:

“Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.” (Job 2:9)

Look at what came just before. Job 1 records the death of all ten children, seven sons and three daughters, and the loss of everything the household owned. Most readers assume, reasonably, that those were her children and her home too. Then she watched her husband sit in the ashes, scraping his sores with a piece of broken pottery (Job 2:8). Her line sounds less like cruelty and more like someone who could not watch it any longer.

Job pushes back, but read his answer carefully: “shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” (Job 2:10). He says “we.” Even while correcting her, he counts her inside the suffering, not outside it.

Then the three friends arrive, and for one week they get it exactly right:

“So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.” (Job 2:13)

Their trouble started when they opened their mouths. Most of the book is their explanations, and at the end God says to them, “ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right” (Job 42:7). The silence was the best thing they did.

That is good news if you have run out of things to say. The Short asks God to “hold him when I’m out of words,” and Paul admits the same limit: “for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). Being out of words is not failing him. Sometimes it is the most honest prayer in the house.

Actions to Take This Week

Sit beside your husband for ten minutes tonight without asking what is wrong or offering a single fix.

Write two short lists, one for the weight you can share and one for the load that is his, then quietly take one thing off the first list tomorrow.

Tell one trusted friend how worn thin you are, so someone is helping to carry your weight too.

A Prayer for My Husband Going Through a Hard Time

God, my husband is under something heavy, and I cannot lift it off him. Show me which part of this weight I can share and which part only he can carry with you. Where I cannot reach him, stay close to him. When I run out of words, pray for us both, the way your Spirit prays when we do not know how. Give him back his hope, one ordinary day at a time. But I can sit beside him under the weight, and I don’t have to be the only one holding him up.

#PrayerForMyHusband #MarriageInHardTimes #Galatians6 #OneBreathPrayer #SameGodYourStory

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for My Husband Going Through a Hard Time

What is a short prayer for my husband going through a hard time?

A short prayer for a husband going through a hard time can be honest about your limits: “God, my husband is carrying something heavy and I can’t fix it. Stay close to him when I can’t reach him, give him back his hope, and give me the patience to stay. Amen.” It asks God to be present where a wife cannot be, and it prays for the wife’s endurance as well as the husband’s.

What Bible verse can I pray for my husband when he is struggling?

Galatians 6:2, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ,” is a good verse for a wife who wants to help. Matthew 11:28 suits the husband himself: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Praying the second verse over him by name hands his load to Jesus rather than to you.

How do I support my husband when he won’t talk about it?

Stay near without demanding that he talk. In Job 2:13 Job’s friends sat with him “seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him,” and that silence was the wisest thing they did. Take practical weight off him, keep the door open, and if he shows signs of depression or speaks of harming himself, involve a doctor.

Is it normal to feel exhausted from supporting a struggling husband?

Yes. Supporting someone through a long hard season is tiring, and scripture does not hide it. Job’s wife, who most readers assume had lost the same ten children as Job, broke under the strain in Job 2:9. Feeling worn thin is a sign that you need support too, not a sign that you have failed him.

What is the difference between Galatians 6:2 and Galatians 6:5?

Galatians 6:2 says “Bear ye one another’s burdens” and Galatians 6:5 says “every man shall bear his own burden,” but the Greek uses two different words. Verse 2 uses baros, a crushing weight that others can help carry. Verse 5 uses phortion, a person’s own load or cargo, which no one else can carry for them.

Back to the Car in the Driveway

He may sit out there again tomorrow. You may stand at the window again, wanting to run out and fix it. Some nights the most loving thing you can do is walk out, open the passenger door and sit down beside him without saying a word.

The weight can be shared. His own load has another Helper, the one who said that burden is light. Your job was never to carry everything. It was to stay.

If you are praying for your husband tonight, leave his first name in the comments. Other wives reading this page will pray for him by name, and maybe for you too.

Watch the prayer again: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNhf1SMDoPs" target="_blank"
