It is the 50th Games. To mark the round number, the Capitol makes one change. Every district must send twice as many children.

Not two tributes from each district. Four. That is 48 children in the arena instead of 24.

Stop and look at that for a second. A country turns fifty, and its way of celebrating is to take more.

That choice is the key to the whole story. It also happens to be the exact opposite of the most famous fiftieth year in history. More on that in a moment. First, the film.

What Is Sunrise on the Reaping About?

Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins’s 2025 novel. It is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen ever volunteers. Francis Lawrence directs, as he has for every Hunger Games film since Catching Fire.

The story belongs to Haymitch Abernathy. Most of us met him as the drunk, sharp-tongued mentor in the first film. Here he is 16, played by Joseph Zada. The reaping falls on his birthday.

He is not even supposed to go. A boy from District 12 is shot trying to run, and Haymitch is pulled in to take his place. He goes into the arena with three other kids from his district, including Maysilee Donner, the girl who first owned the mockingjay pin.

Ralph Fiennes plays a younger President Snow. Elle Fanning, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin and Maya Hawke are also in the cast.

No spoilers for the ending here. But you already know Haymitch survives, because he is alive in the first film. The real question the story asks is not will he live? It is what did living cost him?

What Is a Quarter Quell?

Every 25 years, Panem holds a special Games called a Quarter Quell. Each one adds a twist, and each twist is a message to the districts.

The 25th Quell made the districts vote for their own tributes. Neighbours had to choose whose child would die. The 75th Quell, in Catching Fire, pulled past winners back into the arena. And the 50th, Haymitch’s Games, doubled the number of children taken.

Look at what each twist really says:

The 25th: you will help us do this to you.

The 50th: the older we get, the more we take.

The 75th: even winning will not set you free.

A normal anniversary looks back with thanks. A Quarter Quell looks back and adds to the bill. The Capitol uses the calendar itself to remind people who owns them.

The Detail Most Viewers Will Miss: A Song About Stolen Land

Here is the part of Sunrise on the Reaping that is easy to read past.

Haymitch loves a girl named Lenore Dove. She comes from the Covey, the travelling music family that also gave Panem Lucy Gray Baird. In the book, Lenore Dove sings from a real old English rhyme called “The Goose and the Common.”

Nobody knows who wrote it. It dates from around the 1700s, when rich landowners in England were fencing off the “commons” — open land that poor families had always shared for grazing animals and gathering food. The most quoted lines go like this:

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common,
But lets the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.

In other words: if you are poor and take a goose, you go to jail. If you are rich and take the whole field, you get to keep it.

That is a very pointed song for a girl to sing in District 12. The districts have lost far more than their land. They have lost their own children to a lottery. And the people who did it are never punished, because they write the law.

Collins has said where the idea came from. She was inspired by the philosopher David Hume and what he called “implicit submission” — his surprise at “the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.” Even the country’s name points the same way. “Panem” comes from an old Roman phrase, panem et circenses: bread and circuses. Keep people fed just enough, and keep them watching a show, and they will not look up.

So the 50th Games is not only a cruel twist. It is the Capitol saying the quiet part out loud. Fifty years in, we own more of you than ever.

Squid Game asked a similar question from the other side — what happens when the door out is open and people walk back in anyway. We dug into that in what Squid Game is really about.

The Other 50th Year: Built to Give Everything Back

Long before Panem, there was another country that put a special mark on every fiftieth year. It is written down in an old law in the Hebrew Bible, and it is called the Jubilee.

Here is what was supposed to happen when the Jubilee year came:

Debts were cancelled.

People who had sold themselves into work to pay off what they owed walked free.

Family land that had been sold went back to the family that first owned it.

Think about what that means. Nobody could build up land forever by buying out their struggling neighbours. Every fifty years, the field went back to the goose. It is “The Goose and the Common” turned into law — written down centuries before anyone thought to sing the song.

The year did not start with a party. It started with a ram’s horn blown across the land on the Day of Atonement, the one day set aside for forgiveness. The freedom came out of the forgiveness. The word “jubilee” itself most likely comes from the Hebrew word for that horn. (We traced that word in the real meaning of jubilee.)

To be honest, there is no clear record that ancient Israel ever kept the Jubilee in full. Scholars still argue about it. It may have stayed more of a promise than a practice. But even as a promise, it says something no Quarter Quell ever could.

The old law even gave its reason. The land would always come back because it never really belonged to the buyer in the first place. It belonged to God, and the people were only guests living on it.

That is the whole difference between the two fiftieth years. Panem’s anniversary proves who is in charge by taking more. The Jubilee proved who was in charge by giving everything back. One kind of power gets stronger by holding on. The other shows itself by letting go.

A good place to start:
The Beginner’s Guide to Feeling God’s Presence Every Day
A short, simple guide to noticing God in ordinary days — including the hard ones.
Get the free guide
Free.

Why the 50th Games Still Hits So Hard

Most of us will never live in Panem. But most of us know what it feels like when time only seems to add to what we owe. Another year, another bill. Another birthday, another reason to feel behind.

That is why Haymitch’s story lands. He is a kid whose birthday was turned against him. And the most hopeful thing in his story is a girl singing an old song that says, plainly, this was never yours to take.

When you watch it this November, notice what the anniversary is for. Panem uses its fiftieth year to remind people what they have lost. Somewhere, a long time ago, someone imagined a fiftieth year that existed only to hand it all back.

Both ideas are still around. You get to choose which one you think a good life looks like.

If you like finding these kinds of threads in films, you can explore more with our free Movies & the Bible AI assistant (it opens in ChatGPT).

Discussion Question

The Capitol marked its 50th Games by taking twice as many children. If you could invent the rule for the 50th Games instead — one twist meant to push back against the Capitol — what would it be? It is directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Suzanne Collins’s 2025 novel of the same name.

What is the twist in the 50th Hunger Games?

The 50th Hunger Games is the Second Quarter Quell. Its twist is that every district must send twice the usual number of tributes — four children instead of two — so 48 tributes enter the arena instead of 24. Haymitch Abernathy, aged 16, is one of the four tributes from District 12.

What song does Lenore Dove sing in Sunrise on the Reaping?

In the novel Sunrise on the Reaping, Lenore Dove sings from “The Goose and the Common,” an anonymous English rhyme from around the 1700s. The rhyme protests the enclosure of common land, when wealthy landowners fenced off fields that poor families had shared. Its best-known line says the law punishes the poor person who steals a goose but lets off the “greater villain” who “steals the common from the goose.”

What does Panem mean in The Hunger Games?

Panem comes from the Latin phrase panem et circenses, meaning “bread and circuses.” The phrase describes keeping a population quiet by giving it food and entertainment so it does not question its rulers. In The Hunger Games, the televised Games are the circus.

What was the Jubilee year in the Bible?

The Jubilee was a law in the Hebrew Bible marking every fiftieth year as a year of release. Debts were cancelled, people working off debts were freed, and family land that had been sold returned to its original family. It was announced by a ram’s horn on the Day of Atonement. Scholars debate whether it was ever fully practised in ancient Israel.
