Somebody used the word “monitor” and somebody else used the word “rest,” and now you are home, lying on your left side because you were told to, feeling a small heel press up under your ribs and not knowing whether to be glad of it or afraid.

The thirty seconds above were made for that hour. This page is for the hours after it, because a prayer for a high-risk pregnancy has a much older precedent than most people realise. The Bible records a frightening pregnancy in plain words, and the woman carrying it did not stay calm. She asked a question.

Prayer for a High-Risk Pregnancy Begins With “Why Am I Thus?”

Rebekah waited a long time for her children. Genesis gives the numbers without comment: Isaac was forty when he married her (Genesis 25:20) and sixty when the twins were born (Genesis 25:26). Twenty years. Her husband prayed for her, and she conceived.

Then the pregnancy went wrong, or at least it felt that way from the inside.

“And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.” (Genesis 25:22)

“Struggled” is gentle. The Hebrew verb comes from a root used for crushing and dashing, in a form that suggests the two babies were striking against each other. Her question is even shorter in Hebrew than in English, three clipped words that read like someone too tired to finish the sentence. If this is what I prayed for, why is it like this?

Two things stand out. She did not pretend to be fine. And she did not keep the fear to herself either. She went and asked.

Here is the complication thirty seconds had no room for. The answer she got did not make the pregnancy easier. God told her there were two nations in her womb and that they would be divided (Genesis 25:23). The struggle was explained, not removed. The twins were born fighting, the second one holding his brother’s heel, and they went on fighting for years. So Rebekah’s story does not promise that asking makes the danger disappear. It shows that asking was allowed, that God answered, and that the pregnancy came to term.

That is close to what the Short asks for in its last line: if I cannot be calm, let me not be alone. Calm was not on offer for Rebekah either. Company was.

What Most People Miss: The Shepherd Who Slows Down for Mothers

Isaiah 40:11 is often given to expectant mothers, and it deserves a closer look than it usually gets.

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.” (Isaiah 40:11)

“Those that are with young” translates a single Hebrew word that means ewes who are nursing. It is a rare word. One of its few other appearances is in Genesis 33:13, where a grown man refuses to rush his animals:

“My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.” (Genesis 33:13)

The man saying that is Jacob, the baby who came out of Rebekah’s difficult pregnancy holding a heel. Grown up, with his own children and flocks, he knows that mothers and their young cannot be driven at the pace of everyone else. Push them too hard for even one day and you lose them.

Isaiah uses that word to describe God. The picture is not a shepherd who removes every hill. It is a shepherd who changes the pace of the whole flock so that the ones carrying and feeding young are not left behind. If you have been told to slow down, rest, cancel things and wait, you are not failing a test of faith. You are being led at the pace Isaiah describes.

And there is the line in the Short that says God knows this child already. Psalm 139:16 says “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect.” That phrase translates one Hebrew word, golem, which appears nowhere else in the Bible and refers to something unformed, an embryo. Before there was a face on a scan, there was someone watching.

Rebekah was not the only woman in scripture who prayed hard over a child. Hannah prayed so intensely that a priest thought she was drunk. If the hardest part right now is the gap between appointments, there is more on that in waiting on test results.

One honest word before the practical part. Prayer is not a replacement for the phone call. If something feels wrong tonight, call your midwife, doctor or hospital first, and pray on the way.

Actions to Take This Week

Write down the one question you were too overwhelmed to ask at the last appointment, and keep it in your bag for the next one.

Choose one person who agrees to answer a text at 2am this week, and tell them that listening is the whole job.

Read Genesis 25:21-23 aloud, then say Rebekah’s question in your own words, because God answered it once and it has never been off-limits since.

A Prayer for a High-Risk Pregnancy

God, I am scared, and I am tired of pretending I am not. Set my pace and help me rest without guilt. When the monitor beeps and my mind runs ahead, stay close. If I cannot be calm, do not let me be alone. Amen.

Journal Prompts

What exactly is the fear you have not said out loud to anyone yet?

Where have you been treating rest as failure, and what would change if you saw it as being led?

Who has quietly slowed down for you during this pregnancy, and have you told them it mattered?

If you could ask God one “why am I thus?” question tonight, what would it be?

Rebekah’s pregnancy frightened her, and she asked God why. You are allowed to ask too. Calm may not come tonight, but you do not have to be alone.

#HighRiskPregnancy #PrayerForPregnancy #OneBreathPrayer #ExpectingMom #SameGodYourStory

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for a High-Risk Pregnancy

What is a good prayer for a high-risk pregnancy?

A good prayer for a high-risk pregnancy is honest about fear and asks for presence as well as protection. The one-breath prayer on this page asks God to “hold tonight what my body cannot hold” and, if calm will not come, not to leave the mother alone. Psalm 56:3 says the same thing in the King James wording: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

Is there a woman in the Bible with a difficult pregnancy?

Yes. Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, waited close to twenty years for children, and then her twins “struggled together within her” so badly that she asked, “why am I thus?” (Genesis 25:22). She went to enquire of the LORD, received an answer, and gave birth to Esau and Jacob.

What Bible verse is for pregnant women who are scared?

Isaiah 40:11 says God “shall gently lead those that are with young.” The Hebrew word behind “with young” refers to mothers nursing their young, the same word Jacob uses in Genesis 33:13 when he refuses to overdrive his flocks. It describes a God who changes the pace for mothers rather than leaving them behind.

Is it a lack of faith to be afraid during pregnancy?

No. Rebekah was distressed enough to question the pregnancy she had waited so many years for, and scripture records her going to God with that question rather than being rebuked for it. Fear that is brought to God is part of faith, not proof that faith is missing.

Does God know my baby before birth?

Psalm 139:16 says “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect,” using a Hebrew word, golem, that means unformed and describes an embryo. Jeremiah 1:5 adds, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee.” Both verses describe God knowing a child before anyone else can see them.

A Heel Under Your Ribs

The heel you feel tonight is not a promise. Nobody honest can give you one about how this ends. But it is a reminder that someone small is still in there, and that God’s eyes saw this child before any scan did.

Rebekah’s twins kicked so hard she wondered why she had prayed for them. One of them grew up to say that mothers and little ones must not be driven too hard, or they will not survive. The Bible kept both details. Rest tonight at the pace you have been given, and say the prayer again when the fear comes back.

If you are carrying a high-risk pregnancy, or praying for someone who is, leave a first name and a due month in the comments. Someone reading in another time zone will pray for you by name tonight.

Watch the prayer again: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbbKuGrSyo0" target="_blank"
