The tall glass candles stand in rows: Saint Jude, Saint Anthony, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Michael. You pick one up and turn it around. On the back there’s a prayer, printed in small type. Someone you love has a hard day coming, and you want something to hold while you pray about it.

If you searched for a saint prayer candle, that’s probably close to where you are. You want a candle that does more than smell nice. You want one that helps you pray. So let’s talk honestly about what a saint candle is, what the Bible says about “saints” (it’s more surprising than most people expect), and how to choose a prayer candle that keeps you looking where the saints themselves looked.

What Is a Saint Prayer Candle?

A saint prayer candle is usually a tall glass candle with a picture of a saint on the front and a short prayer printed on the back. They come out of Catholic devotion, and you’ll find them in churches, religious shops, and the grocery aisles of plenty of neighborhoods. Each saint tends to be linked with a kind of need. Saint Jude is known for hard and hopeless cases. Saint Anthony is the one people ask about lost things. Saint Joseph is linked with families and work.

In Catholic teaching, lighting a candle like this is a way of asking that saint to pray for you, much like you’d ask a trusted friend to pray. The candle itself does nothing on its own. It’s a sign of the prayer, and a way to keep that prayer going after you’ve walked out of the room. (We wrote more about this in what votive and vigil candles really mean.)

That last part is worth holding on to, whatever church you call home. A prayer candle isn’t a mechanism. It’s a reminder. It’s a small light that says, “I’m still praying about this.”

The Surprise: Who the Bible Calls “Saints”

Here’s the part most people never notice. When Paul wrote his letters, he used the word “saints” for ordinary church members, people with jobs and kids and bad days. Look at how he opens his letter to a little church in Greece:

“Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.”
— Philippians 1:1 (KJV)

And to the believers in Rome he wrote: “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints.” (Romans 1:7, KJV)

So in the New Testament, a saint is someone who belongs to Jesus. Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians use the word in different ways today, and that’s a real difference worth respecting. But all of them can agree on this much: the word starts with everyday people who follow Jesus. That might include the person you’re praying for tonight.

The Bible’s Own Gallery of Saints

If you love a candle with a face on it, a story on it, a real person who walked through something hard and held on to God, the Bible has a whole chapter like that. Hebrews 11 is sometimes called the “hall of faith.” It walks through one life after another. Abraham is there: “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” (Hebrews 11:8, KJV)

Daniel is there too, though not by name. The writer says these people “through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.” (Hebrews 11:33, KJV)

Then comes the line that turns the whole chapter, and it’s the gold nugget hiding in plain sight:

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”
— Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)

The writer surrounds you with all those faithful people, and then doesn’t tell you to look at them. The writer tells you to look at Jesus. The great cloud of witnesses is there to cheer you on, and every one of them is pointing the same direction.

That is the best test for any prayer candle, saint candle or not: when you light it, where does it point your eyes?

Find the Verse That Fits

A Prayer for Lighting Your Candle

Whether your candle has a saint on it, a verse on it, or nothing at all, here is a prayer you can say as you strike the match. It leans on Hebrews 12, and you can change any word to make it yours.

God, I’m lighting this small light because I don’t want to stop praying about this.
You know the name I’m carrying tonight. You know what tomorrow holds better than I do.
Thank you for every faithful person who went before me and held on when it was hard.
Help me run my own race with patience, one ordinary day at a time.
When I get tired, turn my eyes back to Jesus, who started my faith and will finish it.
Let this light remind me, every time I see it, that I am not praying alone.
Amen.

Say it once tonight. Say it again in the morning when you see the candle on the counter. That’s really all a prayer candle is for: helping one prayer become a habit instead of a single moment.

Saint Candle or Scripture Candle? An Honest Comparison

We want to be straight with you, because trust matters more than a sale. The MyCandlePrayers candles are not saint candles. They’re scripture candles, made for Christians of any church. Here’s how they compare:

What’s on the front: A saint candle shows a saint’s image. A scripture candle shows a Bible verse in faith-centered artwork, so the words you see each morning come straight from the Bible.

What’s on the back: A saint candle usually has one printed prayer. Each MyCandlePrayers candle has a QR code that opens 100+ written prayers, sorted by need: strength, healing, peace, gratitude, guidance and protection. No app, no account, no subscription.

What’s inside: These are 9 oz eco-friendly soy wax candles with a 50-60 hour burn and an Apple Harvest scent.

What’s left after: The glass is reusable, so it keeps a place in your home after the wax is gone.

And if what draws you to saint candles is the person on the front, someone with a story, there’s a scripture-story line too. It includes Abraham, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jesus Praying, The Last Supper, and the Birth of Jesus with a Mary variant. Two of those, Abraham and Daniel, come right out of the Hebrews 11 “hall of faith” you just read.

How to Choose the One That Fits

Start with the need, not the candle. Think about the prayer you were carrying when you picked up that saint candle in the aisle.

Waiting on a hard answer? Trust In God’s Plan carries Romans 8:28.

Running on empty? God, Be My Strength carries Psalm 28:7.

Facing something scary? Give Me Courage, Lord carries Joshua 1:9.

Want a face and a story? Abraham or Daniel in the Lion’s Den, for the person who has to step out not knowing where they’re going.

Then picture the after. A week from now, the candle is on the kitchen windowsill. You walk past it with your coffee and see the verse before you see your phone. On a hard morning you scan the code and the words are already written for you. That’s the whole idea. (If you’re new to this, here’s how to use a prayer candle day to day, and why some people pray across a full week with one candle.)

If you came looking for a saint prayer candle, you may still want one, and that’s between you and your church. But if you want a light that keeps the Bible’s own words in front of you, and a hundred more prayers for the days ahead, go find the verse that fits you, or the person you’re praying for.

Choose Your Prayer Candle

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is a saint prayer candle?
A: A saint prayer candle is usually a tall glass candle with an image of a Catholic saint on the front and a prayer printed on the back. People light one as a sign of a prayer they are carrying, often asking that saint to pray for them. The candle is a reminder and an act of prayer, not something that works on its own.

Q: Who does the Bible call saints?
A: In the New Testament, Paul uses “saints” for ordinary believers. He writes “to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi” (Philippians 1:1, KJV) and to those in Rome “called to be saints” (Romans 1:7, KJV). Different Christian traditions use the word in different ways today, but it begins with everyday people who belong to Jesus.

Q: Can a non-Catholic use a prayer candle?
A: Yes. Christians from many traditions light a candle while they pray as a simple reminder to keep praying. A scripture candle, which carries a Bible verse instead of a saint’s image, works well for anyone who wants the Bible’s own words in front of them each day.

Q: Is there a prayer candle with a Bible person on it instead of a saint?
A: Yes. The MyCandlePrayers scripture-story line includes Abraham, Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Jesus Praying, The Last Supper and the Birth of Jesus, and every candle carries a QR code to 100+ written prayers by need. You can see which verse candle fits on the prayer candles page.

Q: What should I pray when I light a prayer candle?
A: Keep it simple and honest. Name the person or need, thank God for the faithful people who went before you, and ask for patience to keep praying. Hebrews 12:1-2 is a good guide: it reminds you of the “cloud of witnesses” and then tells you to keep “looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”
