Not does God exist. Something smaller and sharper: have I done enough this week?

Two verses in a letter to the church at Ephesus were written for exactly that question. Most people can half-quote them. Far fewer read the sentence that comes next — which is why Ephesians 2:8-9 explained properly turns out to be a bigger relief than those two verses on their own.

You were patient on Tuesday. You lost your temper on Thursday. You meant to pray more than you did. Somewhere in the back of your mind a ledger is running, and most days you are not sure whether you are ahead or behind.

Ephesians 2:8-9 Explained: What the Two Verses Say

Here is the text, word for word:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9, KJV

Four moves in two short verses. Grace is how it happens. Faith is how it is received. It did not come from you. And nobody gets to boast about it.

That is already good news. But read on its own, it only answers half of the Sunday-evening question. It tells you the ledger is not how you got in. It does not yet tell you what the ledger was ever for.

What Comes Before: “Even When We Were Dead”

Verse 8 starts with “For,” which means it is finishing an argument, not starting one. Back up a few lines and the argument is blunt:

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)”
Ephesians 2:4-5, KJV

Notice who is doing things in that sentence. God is rich in mercy. God loved. God made alive. The reader appears only as the one it happens to — and the word used for the reader’s condition is dead.

That single word settles the argument before the argument starts. A sick person can cooperate with treatment. A dead person cannot contribute anything at all. It is the same shape as the parable of the lost sheep, where the sheep never walks home. It gets carried.

The Old Argument About the Word “That”

“And that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” What is that? Grace? Faith? Both?

People have argued about this for centuries, and the Greek gives us a real clue. In Greek, nouns carry gender, and words that point back at them normally match. The word translated “that” is touto, and it is neuter. “Grace” (charis) is feminine. “Faith” (pistis) is feminine too.

So “that” does not grammatically match either word. Because of this, most interpreters read it as pointing at the whole arrangement — being saved by grace through faith, the entire package — rather than at one word inside it. A minority still argue it singles out faith as the thing given. The text does not force the question shut, and it is honest to say so.

But here is what both readings share, and it is the part that matters on a Sunday evening: whichever word you attach “that” to, none of them came from you.

Who Was Boasting, and About What

“Lest any man should boast” is usually read as a warning about general pride. In context it is more specific than that.

Keep reading a little further and you find out who Paul is talking to. He reminds them they were “Gentiles in the flesh,” “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise” (Ephesians 2:11-12). Then, in verse 14, he says Christ “hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.”

So the boasting being ruled out is not only “I am a good person.” It is also “I was born on the right side of the wall.” Pedigree. Family. The religious résumé you did not choose and did nothing to earn. It is the same idea behind what the olive branch means in the Bible — belonging held up by a root you did not grow.

Which is quietly levelling. If nobody earned their way in, then nobody in the room is further along than you.

The Verse That Finishes the Thought

Verses 8 and 9 are quoted constantly. Verse 10 — the sentence that finishes Paul’s thought — is far less often read alongside them. People stop at “not of works,” which is a bit like stopping a sentence at the comma.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10, KJV

Read verses 9 and 10 back to back and watch one small word change everything. Verse 9: not of works. Verse 10: created unto good works.

Not of — they are not where salvation comes from. Unto — they are what it was heading toward all along. The works are not the payment. They are the point.

Two words in verse 10 are worth slowing down for.

“Workmanship” is the Greek poiēma — a made thing, something crafted. It is the word English gets “poem” from. You are not God’s paperwork. You are something shaped on purpose.

“Before ordained” translates a verb meaning prepared beforehand. The good works were got ready in advance. They are not a quota handed to you at the door. They are already there, laid out ahead of you, and the instruction is simply to walk in them.

That is the turn. The question stops being have I done enough? and becomes what has already been put in front of me? One of those questions you can never finish answering. The other one you can answer before lunch.

And it is grace that does the shaping, not the scorekeeping — the same pattern sitting inside the Greek word for discipline, where grace itself is what teaches.

What To Do With This Today

Name the measure. Write down, on paper, the one thing you have been using this week to decide whether God is pleased with you. You are not God’s paperwork.

Q&A

What does Ephesians 2:8-9 mean?

Ephesians 2:8-9 says that salvation is a gift given by grace and received through faith, not something earned by good deeds. The passage states plainly that it did not originate with the person receiving it, and it closes by ruling out boasting: no one can take credit for being rescued.

In Ephesians 2:8, what does “and that not of yourselves” refer to?

In the Greek text the word translated “that” is touto, which is neuter, while both “grace” (charis) and “faith” (pistis) are feminine nouns. Because the grammatical genders do not match, most interpreters read “that” as pointing to the whole arrangement — being saved by grace through faith — rather than to the single word “faith.” A minority read it as singling out faith as the gift. The wording leaves the question genuinely open.

Does Ephesians 2:8-9 mean good works do not matter?

No. Ephesians 2:10, the very next verse, reads: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” In this passage good works are not the cause of salvation, but they are described as its purpose and result — prepared in advance for the believer to walk in.

What does “workmanship” mean in Ephesians 2:10?

The Greek word behind “workmanship” in Ephesians 2:10 is poiēma, meaning a made thing or a piece of craft. It is the word the English word “poem” descends from. The term describes a person as something deliberately shaped rather than accidentally produced.

Who was boasting in Ephesians 2:9?

The surrounding chapter is addressed to Gentile readers, described as “Gentiles in the flesh” and “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel” (Ephesians 2:11-12), and verse 14 speaks of a “middle wall of partition” being broken down. The boasting ruled out in verse 9 is therefore tied to religious pedigree and ancestry as much as to general self-righteousness.
