It is called Found Dogs. It has songs on it that almost nobody alive has ever heard.

John Prine died in April 2020. The day after this record arrives, 10 October, would have been his 80th birthday.

So here is the strange thing. A man who has been gone for six years is about to say something new.

What is John Prine’s Found Dogs?

John Prine’s Found Dogs is a 10-track archival album from Oh Boy Records, the label Prine started himself. It goes back to the sessions for his 1995 album Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, which turns 30 this year.

Look at the two titles side by side. In 1995 the dogs were lost. Thirty years later, somebody went back into the tapes, and the dogs were found.

The record holds three kinds of things:

Songs you know, heard a new way. A demo of “Lake Marie.” A solo acoustic “Humidity Built the Snowman.” Alternate takes of “Ain’t Hurtin Nobody” and “Quit Hollerin At Me.”

A cover. Johnny Horton’s “All for the Love of a Girl.”

Songs nobody has heard. “World Without Love,” “Hey Ah Nothin’,” “Dogs in Burlington” and “My God Thank You John.”

The press release calls it an “intimate look at his songwriting and studio process.” That is a fair description. Demos and alternate takes are the closest you can get to standing in the room while a song is still being decided.

Five unreleased songs, or four?

Most news about the album says it has five previously unreleased John Prine originals. That number comes from the announcement, and it may well be right.

But if you read the tracklist yourself, only four titles are clearly new: the four listed above. The other tracks are versions of songs that already came out on Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, plus the Horton cover. Perhaps the fifth is an early version different enough to count as its own song. Perhaps it is a counting choice. The public coverage does not say.

It is a small thing. But it is the kind of small thing Prine fans tend to care about, and it is worth knowing before you go looking for a fifth song that may turn out to be an old friend wearing a new coat.

The first new song is called “World Without Love”

The first unheard track the label released, back in July, was “World Without Love.” It was cut during the Lost Dogs sessions and then left on the shelf. Benmont Tench, best known for playing keys with Tom Petty, plays organ on it.

The video for it does not use studio footage. It uses old Super 8 home movies of the Prine family on holiday in the early 1970s. Never seen before. A young man on a family trip, decades before anyone knew how the story would go.

Think about that for a second. A song he never released, set to film he never showed, both coming out after he is gone. Neither was made for us. Both arrive anyway.

And the album did not even start in October. It first came out in April as a Record Store Day vinyl, just 2,000 copies. A few people heard these songs early. Tomorrow, everyone can.

Why does a voice keep arriving after the person is gone?

Anyone who has lost someone knows this feeling. A voicemail you can’t delete. A birthday card found in a drawer. A recipe in their handwriting. Something they said years ago that suddenly makes sense today.

You think the conversation is over. Then it isn’t.

That is what Found Dogs is, on a bigger scale. Prine’s family and his label had choices to make. They could have left the tapes alone. Instead they picked the week of his 80th birthday to let him speak one more time. In Chicago, on 8 October, the family and Oh Boy are also hosting a tribute concert, Souvenirs: 80 Years of John Prine, with John C. Reilly as host. The birthday is being kept, even without the birthday boy.

Prine was always good at this, even while he was alive. A former mail carrier from outside Chicago, he wrote plain songs about lonely old people, tired soldiers and small kitchens. Those songs kept finding new listeners for 50 years. Lots of people who first heard “Hello in There” or “Angel from Montgomery” were not born when he wrote them. A good song is a letter that keeps getting delivered.

If you have ever wondered why missing someone can feel almost like a homesickness for a place you can’t get back to, there is a word for that. Our piece on saudade, the Portuguese word for missing someone who may never come back, goes into it.

There is a very old line about the first person in the human story who ever died. It says that, though dead, he still speaks. It is not talking about a recording. It is talking about a life that was lived toward God and so kept counting after it ended. That idea is thousands of years older than vinyl. Maybe that is why a box of found tapes can feel like more than a box of tapes. Some part of us has always suspected that a life is not closed when the person is gone. That what was real in it keeps being heard.

A good place to start:

The Beginner’s Guide to Feeling God’s Presence Every Day

A short video guide and companion PDF for noticing that you are not alone in the ordinary moments, including the quiet, missing-someone ones.

Get the free guide Free.

How to listen to Found Dogs

If you are new to Prine, here is a simple way in. You don’t need to buy anything to start.

Start with “World Without Love.” It is already out, free to stream, and it is the clearest taste of the record.

Then play “Lake Marie” twice. Once the 1995 version, once the new demo. You will hear a song still finding its shape.

Save the four new songs for a quiet moment. A walk, a cup of tea, the bus home. They are worth hearing with nothing else going on.

Then think of one person whose voice you still carry. Maybe call someone who knew them too. That is its own kind of found record.

If you like reading the story behind the songs, you might also enjoy how Lena Martell’s “One Day at a Time” became a number one. Then they were found.

Tomorrow the songs come out. The day after, the birthday comes round. Somewhere a person who has never heard of John Prine will press play on a song from 1995, sung by a man who died in 2020, and it will be brand new to them.

That is not a bad thing to be, at 80. Still arriving.

Discussion question

Is it right to release songs an artist never chose to put out, or should unfinished work stay in the vault? That is one day before what would have been Prine’s 80th birthday on 10 October 2026. A limited vinyl edition of 2,000 copies was first sold for Record Store Day in April 2026.

What songs are on John Prine’s Found Dogs?

Found Dogs has 10 tracks: “Ain’t Hurtin Nobody” (alternative version), “All the Way With You” (acoustic version), “Lake Marie” (demo), “Humidity Built the Snowman” (solo acoustic), “Quit Hollerin At Me” (alternate version), “Hey Ah Nothin’,” “World Without Love,” “All for the Love of a Girl” (a Johnny Horton cover), “Dogs in Burlington” and “My God Thank You John.”

How many unreleased John Prine songs are on Found Dogs?

The album’s announcement describes five previously unreleased John Prine originals. Public coverage of the tracklist clearly identifies four new titles: “World Without Love,” “Hey Ah Nothin’,” “Dogs in Burlington” and “My God Thank You John.” The remaining tracks are alternate, acoustic or demo versions of songs from Prine’s 1995 album Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings, plus one cover.

How is Found Dogs connected to Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings?

Found Dogs is a companion to John Prine’s 1995 album Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings and marks that album’s 30th anniversary. It draws on material from the same era, including outtakes such as “World Without Love” and early or alternate versions of songs like “Lake Marie” and “Humidity Built the Snowman.”

Why do posthumous albums affect people so much?

A posthumous album lets listeners hear something new from a person who has died, which can feel like a conversation continuing after it seemed to end. Many grieving people describe the same feeling when they find an old voicemail, letter or note. For many, it suggests that what was real in a life keeps reaching people after the person is gone.

            <div
