Scientists estimate that roughly half the human genome is built from mobile elements — stretches of code whose main talent, over millions of years, was pasting fresh copies of themselves wherever they happened to land. Biologists call them jumping genes. For most of the last century, the shorter word was junk.

Most of them eventually go quiet. A few get picked up and put to work by the cell — and when that happens, they nearly always lose the ability to move. They settle down. The jumping gene BC200 never did.

And in September 2026, researchers reported where it turned up.

What the jumping gene BC200 actually is

BC200 is a short piece of genetic material that lives mostly in the nerve cells of the brain. It does not build a protein; it is not that kind of gene. Instead it appears to work on other messages inside the cell, helping regulate how instructions get turned into proteins. Scientists first noticed it in the late 1980s, simply because there was so much of it in human neurons that it was hard to miss.

It exists only in humans and our closest primate relatives. Its ancestor — an ordinary piece of mobile DNA — was first put to work in primates somewhere around forty million years ago.

And it still jumps.

That combination is the whole story. Plenty of genes started life as mobile DNA. Plenty of mobile DNA is still mobile. But a piece that does both at once — holds down a real job in the tissue you think with, and keeps the ability to pick up and move somewhere else in the genome — is a pairing the researchers say has not been seen before in a human gene.

Then they found it inside a virus

Here is the part that is easy to skip past, and it is the part doing the real work.

A team at Cornell University, led by Cedric Feschotte, looked at molluscum contagiosum virus — a poxvirus that causes the small, harmless skin bumps a lot of children get and then get over. Sitting inside the virus’s own genetic code, they found two separate copies of human BC200.

Not a lookalike. The human gene, in a virus. Twice, from two separate events, both estimated to have happened during the time of modern humans, on the order of a hundred thousand years ago. In genome terms that is recent enough to feel like last week. The likeliest route is the cell’s own copy-and-paste machinery picking BC200 up and dropping it into viral DNA while the virus was busy replicating inside an infected skin cell.

The work was published in the journal Science on 24 September 2026; a plain-language summary of the research is here.

Why the escape is the proof

You cannot get into a virus by sitting still.

That is what lifts this above a curiosity. A virus genome is a kind of snapshot: whatever is in it got in at some point and stayed. Finding BC200 inside one is physical evidence that a gene with a steady job in human neurons was still actively moving in the recent past. Not a fossil of old mobility. Current mobility, caught in the act.

It is not unprecedented in all of nature. Scientists documented jumping genes escaping from insects into insect viruses back in the late 1980s. What is rare is catching it with a human gene, in the wild, and being able to put a rough date on it.

The part that is not a tidy story

It would be easy to tell this as a clean little parable: the junk turned out to be useful, everyone go home happy. The researchers themselves are more careful than that, and this is better for following them.

Its exact job is still uncertain. Regulating protein production in neurons is the leading idea, not a settled fact. More than thirty years after it was found, what BC200 does moment to moment in a living brain is still being worked out.

The same mobility may be a liability. BC200 shows up at abnormal levels in certain tumours, and at raised levels in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers are openly asking whether a gene that can still move around is part of how some of that goes wrong. A thing can be load-bearing and risky at the same time.

Nobody knows what the virus gets out of it. Whether molluscum contagiosum is using BC200 to manipulate the cells it infects, or whether the gene is simply along for the ride as harmless cargo, is an open question.

That kind of unfinished answer is normal, and it is not a weakness. It has the same shape as the day an AI turned up a CRISPR-like system nobody could explain — the finding arrives years before the meaning does.

A good place to start:

The Beginner’s Guide to Feeling God’s Presence Every Day
A simple way to notice God in the ordinary parts of a day — the three-step rhythm, in plain language. Get the free guide. Free.

What repurposing really looks like

Step back from the virus for a moment and look at the shape of this.

A sequence that spent most of its existence being described as junk, a parasite, a freeloader, turns out to be doing something load-bearing in the tissue we think with. And here is the detail that keeps catching me: it was not cleaned up first. It did not have to stop being a jumping gene in order to become useful. The mobility that got its whole family labelled parasitic is the same mobility it still has today. It was given a purpose as exactly the thing it already was.

That pattern shows up in more places than biology. It is why a metal can be made many times stronger by deliberately putting flaws into it — the flaw is not removed, it is put to work.

And it is one of the oldest things people have said about God: that nothing is wasted. That the part of a life somebody filed under damage, or wrote off as useless, is often the part that ends up carrying weight — and that it does not have to be scrubbed clean of what it is first. The purpose does not arrive as a reward for becoming something else. It arrives while the thing is still itself.

Where that leaves you and your junk DNA

Nothing here changes your day. BC200 will carry on doing whatever it does while you read this sentence, and you will never feel it.

But it does change one small habit of mind. “Junk” was never a description of the DNA. It was a description of how much we knew about it. Half the genome got that label because, at the time, nobody had found the use yet — and the label hung around for decades after it stopped being accurate.

Most of us carry a version of that label about something in ourselves. A stretch of years that looks wasted from the outside. A job that went nowhere. A trait we have spent a long time apologising for. If the bigger question under that one — what am I actually for — is one you have been circling, the free What Is My Purpose? assessment is a short, quiet way to put some words to it.

Because the next time you read that some piece of you is junk, it is worth remembering what that word has actually meant every time scientists have used it. It means nobody has found the use yet.

What Do You Think?

Scientists called half the human genome “junk” for decades because no use for it had been found. Was that a fair label for the evidence they had at the time — or does naming something junk quietly make people stop looking? It does not code for a protein. Instead it appears to help regulate how other genetic instructions inside the cell are turned into proteins, though its exact role is still being studied. BC200 exists only in humans and closely related primates, and it evolved from a piece of mobile DNA, often called a jumping gene.

How did a human gene end up inside a virus?

Researchers at Cornell University found two copies of the human BC200 gene inside molluscum contagiosum virus, a poxvirus that causes small, harmless skin bumps. The most likely explanation is that while the virus was replicating inside an infected human skin cell, the cell’s own copy-and-paste machinery picked up BC200 and inserted it into the viral DNA. Both insertions are estimated to have happened on the order of a hundred thousand years ago.

Why is BC200 considered unusual?

Most genes that evolve from mobile DNA lose the ability to move once the cell puts them to work. BC200 did both at once: it holds a functional role in human neurons while retaining the ability to jump to new places in the genome. Researchers describe that combination as one that had not previously been documented in a human gene.

Is BC200 linked to any diseases?

BC200 appears at abnormal levels in certain tumours and at raised levels in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists have not established that BC200 causes either condition. The open question researchers are investigating is whether a gene that can still move through the genome contributes to those disease processes or is simply a marker of them.

Where was the BC200 research published?

The study was published in the journal Science on 24 September 2026 by a team at Cornell University, with Cedric Feschotte as senior author. It reported two insertions of the human BC200 gene in the genome of molluscum contagiosum virus, and described BC200 as combining active mobility with a cellular function in a way not previously seen in a human gene.
