Somebody says, “What if every family who lost someone this year went home with a candle?” Or it’s the women’s retreat, the volunteer thank-you night, the Christmas Eve service, the box of gifts for the nursing home down the road. Everyone nods. Then someone has to actually find forty candles that say the right thing, and that someone is you. So you search “bulk prayer candles.”

Before you compare a single jar, there’s a story in Exodus worth knowing. It’s about the first time God’s people gathered lamp supplies for a whole congregation, and it ended in a way nobody expected.

The First Bulk Order for the Light

When Israel built the tabernacle, the lamp in it was meant to burn every night. That took oil, and lots of it. God didn’t hand Moses a supplier. The people supplied it. “Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually” (Leviticus 24:2, KJV).

And here’s how the first collection went. “And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing” (Exodus 35:21). The leaders brought the “oil for the light” (Exodus 35:27-28), and everyone else brought whatever they had: gold, yarn, wood, skins, skilled hands. Nobody was assigned a quota.

Then the people doing the work went to Moses with a problem nobody on a church budget committee has ever had: “The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make” (Exodus 36:5). So Moses sent word through the camp to stop. “So the people were restrained from bringing. For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much” (Exodus 36:6-7).

That’s the detail most people read right past. The light in God’s house was never one person’s purchase. It was a whole community saying, together, we want this light to keep burning. When your church orders a box of prayer candles to hand out, you’re standing in a very old line.

What to Check Before You Buy Prayer Candles in Bulk

When you’re buying one candle, you can go with your gut. When you’re buying for a room full of people, a few questions save you headaches:

Who is it for? A grieving widow, a new volunteer, and a couple on their wedding day need different words. A single generic candle for everyone is easier to order but harder to give.

What does it say? A plain candle is a nice gift. A candle with a verse on it keeps talking after the event is over. Make sure the words are actual scripture, not a vague slogan.

What’s in the wax? If these are going into homes, care homes, or hospital rooms, look for clean ingredients and a stated safety standard, not just a pretty label.

How long does it burn? A short-burn candle is a one-night thing. A longer burn means the person lights it again and again, which is the whole point.

What happens when it’s gone? A vessel people can keep and reuse is a gift that stays on the shelf for years.

How will you hand it out? Plan the tag, the card, or the short prayer that goes with it. That’s the part people remember.

One honest note about price. A lot of bulk candle listings lead with a per-unit number. We don’t publish a bulk or bundle price for our candles, so we won’t pretend to here. Current pricing is on the candle page, and it’s worth checking before you set your budget.

A Prayer to Pray Over the Box Before You Give Them Away

This is the part that turns a supply order into a ministry. Before the candles go out, gather whoever is helping, set the box on the table, put your hands on it if you like, and pray something like this:

God, these are just candles. Wax and glass and a wick. But the people who will hold them are not just anybody. You know each name before we write it on the tag. Some of them are grieving. Some are tired. Some are starting something new and scared to say so. Let each one land in the right hands. When they strike the match, remind them they’re not alone, and that a whole church is praying with them. Let the verse on the glass say what we don’t know how to say. And when the wax is gone, let the light stay. Amen.

It takes a minute. It changes how your volunteers carry the box out to the car.

Choose Your Prayer Candle

One Box, Many Verses: Matching the Candle to the Group

Here’s where a scripture candle beats a generic bulk candle. You don’t have to give everyone the same words. Our MyCandlePrayers candles each carry a different Bible verse on the front, so you can choose the verse that fits each group:

Grief or bereavement ministry: The Empty Tomb – Jesus Is Risen, from Matthew 27-28. For the families who will face their first holidays with an empty chair. (Our sympathy gift ideas post has more on what actually helps.)

Hospital visitation or care team: Fill Me With Hope, Lord, which carries Romans 15:13: “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.”

Caregivers and worn-out volunteers: God, Be My Strength, which carries Psalm 28:7: “The LORD is my strength and my shield.”

Graduates, new members, or anyone starting over: Give Me Courage, Lord, from Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and of a good courage.”

Anxious seasons and recovery groups: God, Grant Me Serenity, from Philippians 4:7, “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding.”

Marriage retreats and anniversary Sundays: The Marriage Candle, from Matthew 19:5.

Every candle is a 9 oz soy wax candle with a 50 to 60 hour burn. It meets ASTM safety standards and is made without lead, parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, or plastics. The glass is made to be kept and reused after the wax is gone.

The Part That Keeps Ministering After the Event

Most bulk candles do their job on the night you hand them out. These keep going. On every candle there’s a QR code that opens more than 100 written prayers, sorted by need: strength, healing, peace, gratitude, guidance, and protection. No app, no account, no subscription.

Think about what that means for the widow who takes one home from your memorial service. Three weeks later, at 2 a.m., when the casseroles have stopped coming and she doesn’t have words, the prayer is already written and sitting on her kitchen table. Your church can’t be in her kitchen at 2 a.m. The candle can.

That’s the real reason to give scripture candles as a group instead of one at a time. Jesus said, “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house” (Matthew 5:15). A candle your church gives away doesn’t light up your sanctuary. It lights somebody else’s house. If you’re giving to just one person instead of a crowd, our post on choosing a candle gift walks through that too, and if you want a simple rhythm to suggest with each candle, try the morning-and-evening pattern in our 7 day prayer candle guide.

A Few Practical Tips for Ordering for a Group

Order early. Give yourself plenty of time before the event for shipping and for sorting.

Make a simple count by verse. List your groups, how many people are in each, and which verse fits them. That turns one big order into a thoughtful one.

Write the tags by hand. A first name and “We’re praying for you” is enough. Handwriting tells people a person thought of them.

Pray over the box. Use the prayer above, or your own. Let your volunteers know they’re part of the gift.

The people of Israel brought so much for God’s house that they had to be told to stop. You don’t need to go that far. You just need enough for the people God has put in front of you this season, and the right words on each one.

Find the Right Candle for Them

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What are bulk prayer candles used for in a church?
A: Churches buy prayer candles in larger numbers to give away at memorial services, Christmas Eve or candlelight services, volunteer appreciation nights, retreats, and visits to hospitals or care homes. A candle with a Bible verse on it gives each person something to take home that keeps reminding them they’re being prayed for.

Q: What should I look for when buying prayer candles in bulk?
A: Check who the candles are for, what words or scripture they carry, what the wax is made of, how long they burn, whether the container can be reused, and how you’ll hand them out. A candle with a real verse and a longer burn time keeps ministering long after the event.

Q: Can I give different verse candles to different groups in one order?
A: Yes. The MyCandlePrayers scripture candles each carry a different verse, such as Psalm 28:7 for strength, Romans 15:13 for hope, Joshua 1:9 for courage, and the Empty Tomb candle for grief. Each also has a QR code that opens more than 100 written prayers sorted by need. You can choose the verse that fits them and see current pricing on the candle page.

Q: Is there a Bible story about a congregation providing light together?
A: Yes. In Exodus 35, Israel’s leaders brought “oil for the light” for the tabernacle, while the rest of the people gave what they could, every one “whose heart stirred him up.” They gave so much that Moses had to tell them to stop, because “the people bring much more than enough” (Exodus 36:5, KJV). The lamp in God’s house was kept burning by a whole community.

Q: Does lighting a prayer candle make a prayer work better?
A: No. God hears a prayer whether a candle is lit or not. A prayer candle is a reminder and an act of prayer, not a way to make something happen. Its value is that it gives a person something they can see, which helps them keep praying.

            <div
