You notice it when you help your mother up from the chair, or when your father reaches for his cup and you steady it without saying a word. This same hand once gripped yours at the edge of a road and would not let go until it was safe to cross.

The Short above is a prayer for aging parents, written for the one doing the holding now. “God, I’m holding the hand that used to hold mine, and it gets weaker every week.” Before it asks for anything, it settles a worry you may never have said out loud. “If you’re worn out and already grieving, you’re not doing it wrong.”

Thirty-four seconds can tell you that. They have no room to show you whose prayer the closing verse really is.

A Prayer for Aging Parents That Your Parent Prayed First

The Short ends on half a verse. Here is all of it: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth” (Psalm 71:9).

Read it again and listen for who is speaking. It is not the tired son or daughter. It is the old person.

Psalm 71 has no title in the Hebrew text, so nobody can say for certain who wrote it, though the old Greek translation put David’s name on it. But the speaker tells us their age twice: once here, and again near the end. “Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not” (Psalm 71:18).

Look at what this person remembers. “By thee have I been holden up from the womb” (Psalm 71:6). Held up since birth. The fear in verse 9 is that the holding will stop now, at the end, when there is nothing left to give back.

“Faileth” translates the Hebrew verb kalah. It means to be finished, used up, spent. In other places the KJV renders the same verb “consume” and “end.” So this line is not about one bad week. It is about strength that is running out.

That is the prayer your parent may no longer be able to pray. Some days they can’t find the word for breakfast. But long ago someone old, and afraid of being dropped, put that fear into words. Now you can say it for them.

Here is the hard part. Verse 9 does not ask for the strength to come back. It asks for one thing. Don’t leave me while it goes.

The Short’s prayer is just as modest. It does not ask for a cure. “Let them feel safe today, even when they’re confused.” One day. Safe. If the confusion is worst late in the day, here is why evenings are harder with dementia.

So when you sit down beside the bed again tomorrow, you are one of the ways “forsake me not” gets answered.

What Most People Miss: You Are Being Carried Too

A second voice in the Bible answers the old person’s fear almost line for line. It is in Isaiah.

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you” (Isaiah 46:4).

“Hoar hairs” is old English for white hair. “Carry” comes twice, and both times it is the Hebrew sabal, which means to bear a heavy load.

The verses just before it set up a contrast. Isaiah pictures the statues of Babylon’s gods, Bel and Nebo, loaded onto animals: “they are a burden to the weary beast” (Isaiah 46:1). Those gods have to be carried. Then God speaks to people who have been “carried from the womb” (Isaiah 46:3) and says the carrying will go on until their hair is white.

Isaiah was speaking to a whole nation, not to one family at a bedside. But the picture is a life carried from birth to white hair.

Notice who gets weary in that picture. The one doing the carrying. You know that already. The promise is that God carries the one you are carrying. The weight on your arms is not only on your arms.

Then there is a line for the day they look at you and can’t find your name.

“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee” (Isaiah 49:15).

It was first said to Zion, a people who had just said, “The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me” (Isaiah 49:14). It was not written about illness. But read the middle of it. They may forget. Scripture says out loud that a mother’s memory of her own child can fail. And it says God’s memory does not. If your mother has forgotten your name, you are not forgotten. Neither is she.

Actions to Take This Week

Read Psalm 71:9 out loud beside your parent today, slowly, as their prayer and not yours.

Hold their hand for one full minute today without fixing, feeding or tidying anything.

Ask one person by name today for one specific hour this week, so you can sleep or sit outside.

A Prayer for Aging Parents and the One Who Cares for Them

God, the hand I am holding used to hold mine, and it is lighter every week. I am tired, and I already miss someone who is still here. Carry the one I am carrying. Let them feel safe today, even in the hours they don’t know where they are. When they forget my name, remember theirs, and remember mine. Give me enough patience for this afternoon and enough sleep for tomorrow. Do not leave either of us while their strength runs out. Amen.

Journal Prompts

What is one thing this hand did for you as a child that you now do for them?

Which loss has hurt most so far: the walking, the remembering, the talking, or something nobody else would notice?

What are you already grieving that you have not told anyone?

Who could carry one hour of this, if you asked them plainly?

I’m holding the hand that used to hold mine. Psalm 71:9 is my parent’s prayer: “forsake me not when my strength faileth.” Today I get to be part of the answer.

#AgingParents #CaregiverPrayer #Psalm71 #OneBreathPrayer

Q&A: One Breath Prayer While Caring for a Parent Who Is Fading

What is a short prayer for aging parents?

A short prayer for aging parents is: “God, I’m holding the hand that used to hold mine, and it gets weaker every week. I’m tired, and it hurts to lose them a little at a time. Let them feel safe today, even when they’re confused. And give me strength to keep loving them well. Amen.” It is short enough to pray out loud at the bedside or silently in a waiting room.

What Bible verse is good for a parent who is getting old and weak?

Psalm 71:9 is the Bible’s own prayer for old age: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.” Isaiah 46:4 reads like an answer to it: “And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you.” The first is spoken by an old person. The second is spoken by God.

Is it normal to grieve a parent who is still alive?

Grieving a parent who is still alive is common, and it is often called anticipatory grief. It happens when a person is lost a little at a time, through age, illness or memory loss, so the mourning starts before the death does. Feeling it does not mean a caregiver has given up or loves the parent any less.

How do you pray for a parent with dementia?

A prayer for a parent with dementia can be small and sized for one day: that they feel safe, that they are calm this evening, that they sense they are loved even when they cannot place a face. Psalm 71:9 can be prayed for them, in their voice: “forsake me not when my strength faileth.” It can be said out loud beside them or silently from the next room.

Does God forget a person who has lost their memory?

The Bible says God does not forget people, even when people forget each other. Isaiah 49:15 says, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” The verse was first spoken to the people of Zion, but it shows that being remembered by God does not depend on anyone’s memory holding.

Tomorrow, the Same Chair

Tomorrow you will pull up the same chair and take the same hand, and it may be a little lighter again. That is not you failing. That is you being part of how an old prayer gets answered. And under both of your hands is the one who says, “even to hoar hairs will I carry you.”

If the tiredness and the sadness keep arriving together, what anticipatory grief is explains why you can mourn someone who is still here. And for the practical side, who helps and who decides, see what the Bible says about caring for aging parents.

If you would like to, leave your mother’s or father’s first name in the comments, and one thing their hands used to do.

Watch One Breath Prayer While Caring for a Parent Who Is Fading on YouTube.
