Maybe you’re waiting on a decision that won’t come until next week. You remember the tall glass candles from your grandmother’s kitchen or the back of a church, the ones that seemed to burn for days, and you think: I want to keep a light on for this. So you search “7 day prayer candle.”

That instinct is old and good. Keeping a light on is a way of saying, I haven’t stopped praying about this. But there’s a detail in the oldest “keep it burning” command in the Bible that most people read right past, and it changes how you’d use any prayer candle this week.

What a 7 Day Prayer Candle Actually Is

A 7 day prayer candle is a tall, narrow candle poured straight into a glass cylinder, usually about eight inches tall and around two inches across. The name is a promise about burn time: sellers list them anywhere from roughly 100 to 170 hours, meant to burn more or less nonstop for about a week. You’ll also hear them called vigil candles, sanctuary candles, or novena candles. (A novena is nine days of prayer, so the “seven day” and “novena” labels overlap more than they match.)

They grew up in Catholic devotion, where a candle is lit as a sign of a prayer you’re keeping before God. If you want the meaning behind the words vigil and votive, we unpacked them in Catholic prayer candles: what votive and vigil really mean.

One honest note. The same tall jars are also sold for folk magic and “spell” work, and you’ll run into that when you shop. A candle doesn’t carry a prayer anywhere and doesn’t make anything happen. God hears you whether the wick is lit or not. The light is for you: a reminder you can see that you’ve handed something to God and are keeping watch.

The Lamp That Burned “Always” Was Never Left Alone

Here’s the detail. When God told Moses how to light the tabernacle, the instruction sounds just like a seven day candle:

“And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.” (Exodus 27:20, KJV)

The lampstand held seven lamps (Exodus 25:37). The word behind “always” and “continually” is the Hebrew tamid, which means steady and regular. Read the very next line, though: Aaron and his sons “shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD” (Exodus 27:21). And a few chapters later we find out how: the priest tended the lamps “every morning,” and again “when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even” (Exodus 30:7-8).

So the light that burned “always” was a light somebody came back to twice a day. Morning and evening, a person showed up, trimmed it, and prayed. The steadiness came from the tending.

That’s good news if you’re tempted to buy a candle and let it do your praying while you’re at work or asleep. Fire safety groups like the National Fire Protection Association say the same thing in plainer words: blow a candle out before you leave the room or go to bed. You don’t need a flame burning in an empty house to keep a vigil. What you need is a light you come back to.

A 7 Day Prayer You Can Start Tonight

Here’s a simple way to keep a seven day vigil the way the tabernacle lamp was kept. Light your candle in the morning while you pray, and again in the evening. Blow it out when you leave. Each day has one verse and one short prayer. Pray it out loud if you can, then add the name of the person or the thing you’re carrying.

Day 1, Strength. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped” (Psalm 28:7). God, I don’t have much left today. Be my strength for this one day, and help me notice the help when it comes.

Day 2, Peace. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). God, I can’t make sense of all this yet. Guard my heart and my mind anyway, even before I understand.

Day 3, Hope. “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13). God, fill the empty places with hope. Not wishful thinking. The real kind that comes from You.

Day 4, Trust. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28). God, I can’t see how this works out. I’m choosing to trust that You can.

Day 5, Courage. “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). God, go with me into the room I’m dreading. Let me walk in brave because I’m not walking in alone.

Day 6, Protection. “The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psalm 121:8). God, watch over the one I’m praying for, when they leave in the morning and when they come home.

Day 7, Rest. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8). God, I’ve brought this to You every day this week. Tonight I’m putting it down. Let me sleep.

Notice what happens by Day 7. You haven’t fixed the situation. But you’ve shown up fourteen times, morning and evening, and you’ve said out loud what you’re afraid of and who you’re trusting. That’s what a vigil does. It turns a worry you carry all day into a prayer you keep.

Find the Verse That Fits

A Different Kind of 7 Day Candle

If what you want is a tall jar that burns nonstop for a week, a classic vigil candle does that. But if what you want is the vigil itself, a light you come back to morning and evening, there’s another option worth knowing about.

Five of the verses in the prayer above are printed on our scripture candles. God, Be My Strength carries Psalm 28:7. God, Grant Me Serenity carries Philippians 4:7. Fill Me With Hope, Lord carries Romans 15:13. Trust In God’s Plan carries Romans 8:28. Give Me Courage, Lord carries Joshua 1:9. So the verse for the day you need most can sit on your table where you’ll actually see it, every time you strike the match.

Each one is a 9 oz soy candle with a 50 to 60 hour burn. That’s built for lighting and blowing out, not for burning around the clock, which makes it a natural fit for a morning-and-evening vigil. Light it for your prayers each day and it will carry you well past one week. (Just how far depends on how long you pray.)

And on every candle there’s a QR code. Scan it and you’ll find more than 100 written prayers, sorted by need: strength, healing, peace, gratitude, guidance, and protection. No app, no account, no subscription. So on Day 8, when the week is over but the hard thing isn’t, the next prayer is already written and waiting for you. When the wax is gone, the glass is yours to keep and reuse.

If you’re keeping this vigil for someone else, a candle can be a way to hand them the vigil too. We wrote more about that in what a woman in 2 Kings knew about giving light.

How to Keep the Light Going After Day 7

A week is a good start, not a finish line. The psalmist prayed “evening, and morning, and at noon” (Psalm 55:17). That’s not a rule to keep. It’s a rhythm to borrow. A few ways to keep it going:

Keep your two times. Morning and evening worked for the tabernacle for centuries. Tie them to something you already do, like your first coffee and the moment you turn off the kitchen light.

Write the name down. Put the name of the person or need on a slip of paper next to the candle. When the answer comes, write the date beside it.

Change the verse with the season. Courage before the surgery, peace while you wait, hope when the news is slow. If you need words for the waiting, our prayer for peace and strength is a good place to start.

Whatever you choose, the point is the same as it was in the tabernacle. The light stays on because someone keeps coming back to it. And God, who heard you on Day 1, is still listening on Day 70.

Light the Verse You Need Today

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is a 7 day prayer candle?
A: A 7 day prayer candle is a tall candle poured into a glass cylinder, usually about eight inches tall, made to burn for around a week. Sellers list burn times anywhere from about 100 to 170 hours. It comes from Catholic devotion, where a lit candle is a visible sign of a prayer you’re keeping before God. The candle itself doesn’t make anything happen. It’s a reminder that you’ve brought something to God.

Q: Is it safe to let a 7 day candle burn while I sleep or leave the house?
A: Fire safety groups, including the National Fire Protection Association, say to blow out any candle before you leave the room or go to sleep. Even the tabernacle lamp in Exodus that burned “always” was tended by a priest every morning and every evening. You can keep a prayer vigil by lighting your candle when you pray and putting it out when you go.

Q: What should I pray with a 7 day prayer candle?
A: Try one short prayer and one verse each day for seven days, morning and evening: strength (Psalm 28:7), peace (Philippians 4:7), hope (Romans 15:13), trust (Romans 8:28), courage (Joshua 1:9), protection (Psalm 121:8), and rest (Psalm 4:8). Add the name of the person or need you’re carrying each time you pray.

Q: Is there a Christian prayer candle that has the verse printed on it?
A: Yes. The MyCandlePrayers scripture candles each carry a Bible verse on the front, such as Psalm 28:7, Philippians 4:7, or Joshua 1:9, plus a QR code that opens more than 100 written prayers sorted by need. They’re 9 oz soy candles with a 50 to 60 hour burn, made for lighting at prayer time rather than burning nonstop. You can see which verse candle fits.

Q: Does lighting a prayer candle make a prayer more powerful?
A: No. God hears a prayer whether a candle is lit or not. A candle is a reminder and a way to keep watch, something you can see that says “I haven’t stopped praying about this.” Many people find that the steady habit of lighting it each morning and evening is what keeps them praying.
