The coffee is made. Your Bible is open to the page you marked last night, and you’ve read exactly one verse when a door creaks down the hall and a small voice calls your name.

By the time you get back to the chair, the coffee is cold and the morning has moved on without you. And a familiar voice in your head says what it always says: You blew it again. Maybe quiet time with God just isn’t for people like you.

Here’s something that might change how tomorrow morning feels. The most famous quiet time in the Gospels got interrupted too. It was Jesus’ own. And what He did next takes most of the pressure off yours.

Show Me Day 1

The Verse Everyone Quotes, and the Two Everyone Skips

If you’ve looked up quiet time with God before, you’ve probably seen this verse:

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” (Mark 1:35, KJV)

Early, alone, quiet. Most people stop reading there, but the next two verses tell a different story:

“And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.” (Mark 1:36-37, KJV)

His friends came looking for Him. The word Mark uses for “followed after” is a strong one. It shows up only this once in the whole New Testament, and it carries the sense of tracking someone down.

That is an interrupted quiet time. And here’s the part worth sitting with. Mark records no complaint, no sigh, and no “give me ten more minutes.” Jesus simply answers:

“Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.” (Mark 1:38, KJV)

Notice the word us. He doesn’t send them away so He can finish. He gets up and takes the people who interrupted Him along with Him.

It Happened Again, and This Time It Was His Idea

Five chapters later, the disciples come back worn out from a stretch of teaching and traveling. Jesus is the one who suggests a break:

“Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” (Mark 6:31, KJV)

That changes what quiet time is. Jesus doesn’t frame it as homework. He frames it as rest, offered to tired people who hadn’t even had time to eat. It’s an invitation, not an assignment.

So they get in a boat and head somewhere private. And it doesn’t work. Mark says the people saw them leaving, ran ahead on foot from all the towns, and “outwent them” (Mark 6:33, KJV). The crowd got to the quiet place before they did.

Jesus’ response? He “was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things” (Mark 6:34, KJV). That long day ends with the crowd being fed.

And then comes the line that’s easy to read past:

“And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.” (Mark 6:46, KJV)

The quiet time didn’t get canceled. It got moved. The plan fell through, so it happened later, on a mountain, after everyone else had gone home.

What This Means for Your Quiet Time With God

If Jesus’ own time alone with God got interrupted, then an interrupted morning is not proof that you’re doing it wrong. It’s proof that you’re living a real life, and a real life is exactly what quiet time is for. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Make it small enough to survive a knock on the door. One short reading and a few honest sentences to God.

Pick your “mountain” ahead of time. Decide now where the backup goes: the car before you walk into work, the lunch break, the ten minutes after the house goes quiet at night. Then an interruption isn’t the end of the day’s quiet time. It just sends you to plan B.

Start with Jesus, not a checklist. You don’t need a system to master first. Read a little of what Jesus said and did, then talk to God about it the way you’d talk to a trusted friend. If prayer itself feels awkward, here’s how the disciples learned it by watching Jesus first.

Take the “us” with you. When someone interrupts you, let them become the first thing you pray about. That’s what Jesus did with the people who interrupted Him. He didn’t treat them as the enemy of His time with God. He took them along.

The Quiet Was Never the Point

Here’s the gold nugget hiding in those two stories. Both times Jesus went somewhere quiet, He came out of it walking toward people, not away from them. The quiet wasn’t a wall to keep the world out. It was where He started from.

So maybe the question isn’t “Did I get thirty uninterrupted minutes today?” Maybe it’s this: “Did I spend some time with Jesus today, even a little, and did it change how I met the people who interrupted me?”

That’s a quiet time a parent of toddlers, a nurse on night shift, or someone who said yes to Jesus last week can actually keep. It’s the same idea behind the morning Jesus started with breakfast.

A Rhythm That Fits a Real Morning

Maybe you’re thinking, “I’d love that. I just don’t know what to read when I sit down.” That’s the gap 30 Days Walking with Jesus was made to fill.

It’s a beginner-friendly reading plan that walks you through the life of Jesus one day at a time, straight through the Gospels. Each day takes under 10 minutes, and it’s built for mornings that don’t go to plan:

30 short devotional videos, each under 60 seconds, for the days you only have a minute.

30 full-chapter audio readings, so when the chair gets taken you can still listen in the car or on a walk. That’s your mountain later in the day.

A complete PDF study guide with journal prompts, for the mornings that stay quiet.

5 quick-reference scripture guides to keep close by.

Picture a month from now. The kids may still wake up early. The phone will still buzz. But you’ll know where you are in the story of Jesus, and you’ll know where you’re picking back up tomorrow. An interruption won’t feel like failing anymore. It’ll just be the place where you take the “us” along, the way Jesus did. For more on a daily rhythm, here’s the story of the bread that wouldn’t keep overnight.

Here’s the honest ask. 30 Days Walking with Jesus is free. No payment, no card required, no upsell. The words of Jesus shouldn’t sit behind a paywall. You get instant access on any device, it’s yours forever, and Day 1 is ready whenever you are, even if “whenever” turns out to be tonight on the mountain instead of tomorrow at dawn.

Start Day 1 Today

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is quiet time with God?
A: Quiet time with God is a regular stretch of time set aside to be with God, usually by reading a short part of the Bible, praying in your own words, and sitting still for a minute or two. It doesn’t need a set length or a perfect place. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus went out “a great while before day” to “a solitary place” to pray (Mark 1:35, KJV), and later invited His tired friends to “come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:31, KJV).

Q: What should I do during quiet time with God?
A: Keep it simple. Read a short passage, and one of the four Gospels is a good place to start because it shows you Jesus directly. Then talk to God about what you read, the way you’d talk to a trusted friend, and finish with a quiet minute. A daily reading plan saves you from deciding what to read from scratch each morning.

Q: What if my quiet time with God keeps getting interrupted?
A: An interrupted quiet time is not a failed one. Jesus’ own early-morning prayer in Mark 1:35-38 was interrupted when Simon and the others found Him and said “All men seek for thee,” and Mark records no complaint, only Jesus saying “Let us go into the next towns.” In Mark 6, a planned time of rest was taken over by a crowd, and later that day Jesus “departed into a mountain to pray” (Mark 6:46, KJV). If your morning gets taken, move your quiet time to a later moment instead of giving up on the day.

Q: How long should quiet time with God be?
A: The Bible doesn’t set a length for it. A short time you can actually keep tends to serve you better than a long one you dread or keep missing. If you’d like a guided start, 30 Days
