Maybe you heard it second-hand: “Be careful around her. She has a Jezebel spirit.”

It might have come after you asked a hard question in a meeting. Or after you disagreed with a leader. Or after nothing you can even point to. And now you are up late, typing into a search bar: what is a Jezebel spirit? Under that sits a quieter worry: is that what I am?

You are not the only one asking. The keyword tool we use estimates about 27,000 searches a month for this phrase in the United States alone.

So let’s look at it slowly, like two friends with a Bible open on the table. Here is the short answer first. The phrase “Jezebel spirit” is not in the Bible. Not once. But there are two Jezebels in the Bible, and Jesus said one sentence about the second one that almost nobody quotes.

What Is a Jezebel Spirit?

When people say “Jezebel spirit,” they usually mean a controlling, manipulative influence. Some describe it as an evil spirit that works through a person to take over a church, a family or a leader. Many websites give long lists of “signs.”

Here is what is certain. The words “Jezebel spirit” and “spirit of Jezebel” never appear in Scripture. The name Jezebel does. It belongs to a queen in the books of 1 and 2 Kings, and it is used one more time for a woman in a church in Revelation 2. That is all.

So where did the phrase come from? Honestly, we could not find anyone who has pinned down who said it first. It is older than many people think. One writer, Jackie David Johns, recalls hearing evangelists use it during a childhood in the 1950s and 60s. As Johns remembers it, they aimed it mostly at women who wore make-up and jewellery, or who were said to boss their husbands.

Later, books on spiritual warfare carried the idea much further. Francis Frangipane’s The Three Battlegrounds, first published in 1989, gave it whole chapters. John Paul Jackson’s Unmasking the Jezebel Spirit put it in a title.

To be fair, many of those teachers were trying to name something real. Control and manipulation do happen in churches, and they do real harm. Many also say the label can fit a man as easily as a woman. But in everyday use, it lands mostly on women. And often the only “sign” is that she spoke up.

So the honest way to answer the question is to stop reading lists and go read the two Jezebels.

The First Jezebel: The Queen in 1 Kings

The first Jezebel was a princess from Sidon, on the coast north of Israel. She married Ahab, king of Israel, nearly 2,900 years ago (1 Kings 16:31). The Bible is very plain about what she did.

She had God’s prophets killed. “Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD” (1 Kings 18:4, KJV). She sent a death threat to the prophet Elijah, and he ran for his life (1 Kings 19:2-3).

Then there is Naboth. Naboth owned a vineyard next to the palace. King Ahab wanted it. Naboth said no. So Jezebel took over:

“So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth.” (1 Kings 21:8, KJV)

The letters told the town leaders to “proclaim a fast,” seat Naboth in front of everyone, and bring in two liars to accuse him of cursing God and the king (1 Kings 21:9-10). They did. Naboth was stoned to death. Ahab got his vineyard.

Read that again slowly. In this story, the person who used a religious gathering and a religious charge to ruin an innocent neighbour was Jezebel. That should make every one of us slow to throw a religious charge at anyone.

Now look at what is not on her list. Being confident is not there. Having opinions is not there. Leading is not there. Yes, on the last day of her life “she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window” (2 Kings 9:30, KJV). That one line is where the old insult “painted Jezebel” comes from. But the Bible’s case against her is about blood and idols. It is not about eye paint.

The Mercy in the Same Chapter

Here is a detail that is easy to read past. Right after Naboth’s murder, the Bible sums up the royal couple in one hard sentence:

“But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.” (1 Kings 21:25, KJV)

None like him. The worst. And then, two verses later, Ahab hears God’s judgment, tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth and goes quiet. Look at how God responds:

“Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days.” (1 Kings 21:29, KJV)

God noticed at once. Even in that house, the door was open. We looked closely at that moment in our study of the Hebrew word for humility. The Bible never records Jezebel doing the same. But hold on to this: mercy was on the table, even there.

The Second Jezebel: A Woman in Thyatira

Many centuries later, Jesus sends seven short letters to seven churches. They are in Revelation 2 and 3. One goes to a town called Thyatira, in what is now Turkey.

Jesus starts with praise. “I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience” (Revelation 2:19, KJV). This is a loving, hard-working church. Then comes the problem:

“Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.” (Revelation 2:20, KJV)

A few things help here.

“Jezebel” was probably not her real name. Many Bible scholars read it as a nickname. It was a way of saying, “She is doing what that old queen did. She is pulling God’s people toward idols.” Some ancient copies of Revelation even read “your wife Jezebel,” which would mean she was married to a leader of the church. We do not know for sure.

Her problem was what she taught. Jesus calls it “this doctrine” (Revelation 2:24). Thyatira was a working town, known for its trade guilds: groups of dyers, weavers, potters and metal workers. Historians say guild meals were often held in honour of a guild’s god. Many scholars think her message was close to this: “Go ahead, join in. It won’t hurt you.” That part is a well-supported guess, not a quote. What the verse itself names is clear: she taught people toward idols and toward sexual sin.

The letter is written to the church. “Thou sufferest” means “you put up with it.” Jesus is talking to a whole community about a teaching they allowed. It is not a tool for one person to tag another.

And here is something that surprised us. The Bible mentions one other woman from Thyatira. Her name is Lydia:

“And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened.” (Acts 16:14, KJV)

Lydia ran a business. She led a household. When she wanted Paul and his friends to stay at her home, the next verse says, “she constrained us” (Acts 16:15, KJV). She would not take no for an answer. And the Bible tells her story with warmth.

Same city. Two strong women. One is praised and one is warned. The difference was never strength. It was where each one was leading people.

The Line Most People Skip: “I Gave Her Space to Repent”

Now read the very next verse. Most lists of “signs” never mention it.

“And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.” (Revelation 2:21, KJV)

The Greek word behind “space” is chronos. It is the everyday word for time. Jesus is saying, “I gave her time.”

Think about who is speaking. A few verses earlier He is described as having “eyes like unto a flame of fire” (Revelation 2:18). He sees everything about her. And the first thing He did with what He saw was wait.

She did not take the time she was given. The warning that follows is severe, and we should not soften it. But even inside the warning there is a door: “except they repent of their deeds” (Revelation 2:22, KJV).

Then Jesus turns to everyone else in that church and says, “I will put upon you none other burden” (Revelation 2:24, KJV). No extra weight. No hunt for hidden Jezebels. Just hold on to what you have.

So here is what we found. In the one place where Jesus speaks about a “Jezebel,” He does three things:

He names what she did. Teaching. Leading people to idols.

He gave her time.

He left a door open.

The way the label is often used today does the opposite on all three. It is vague. It is instant. And it is final. A label says what you are. Jesus said what she did.

If someone has put this name on you, hold it up against the passage. Are you teaching people to walk away from God? Have you lied in someone else’s name, like the queen did? Have you harmed an innocent person to get what you wanted? If not, these verses are not describing you. Being direct is not in them. Asking questions is not in them.

And if there is something in you that needs to change, as there is in all of us, notice the tone Jesus takes. Time, and an open door.

One more thing. Jesus knows how this feels. People in the crowd once said of Him, “He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?” (John 10:20, KJV). He has been told He had an evil spirit. You are not bringing Him a hurt He has never felt.

What If You Really Are Dealing With a Controlling Person?

That is real too. Some readers are here because someone is truly controlling or lying to them. You do not need a label to face that. Do what Jesus did and name the behaviour. “You read my messages.” “You told the group something untrue about me.” A behaviour can be talked about, checked and changed. A label cannot. And if you are not safe, get some distance and tell one person you trust.

A good place to start: The Beginner’s Guide to Feeling God’s Presence Every Day. You would not be the first faithful person to be misread by a religious leader. A priest once watched Hannah praying and decided she was drunk. He was wrong, and God heard her anyway.

Actions to Take Today

Read the seven verses yourself. Open Revelation 2:18-24. It takes about three minutes. Note every action Jesus names. Then count how many are about personality. You will not find one.

Write two short lists. On one side: “What I was called.” On the other: “What I actually did.” Use actions only, no labels. If something real shows up on the second list, that is good news. A real action can be put right. If all it says is “I disagreed,” you have your answer.

Read both lists to one person outside the situation. Choose a friend who is not part of that group. Ask, “What do you see?” This is the hardest step and the one that helps most.

If the words still sting, and you are wondering what to do about the person who said them, our free Am I Ready to Forgive? quiz is a gentle way to see where your heart is. Is that belief anywhere in Revelation 2?

Where in your life has God already given you “space,” time to grow instead of a quick verdict?

A Prayer for When You Have Been Labelled

God, someone put a name on me and I can’t shake it. The phrase is not in the Bible. It borrows the name of Queen Jezebel in 1 and 2 Kings and of a woman Jesus calls “Jezebel” in Revelation 2:20, who taught people in the church at Thyatira toward idols and sexual sin.

Is the Jezebel spirit in the Bible?

No. The phrases “Jezebel spirit” and “spirit of Jezebel” do not appear anywhere in the Bible. The name Jezebel appears for a queen of Israel in 1 and 2 Kings and once in Revelation 2:20 for a woman in the church at Thyatira. The idea of a “Jezebel spirit” grew up later in preaching and in books on spiritual warfare.

What did Jezebel do in the Bible?

Queen Jezebel, wife of King Ahab, had the prophets of the LORD killed (1 Kings 18:4), threatened the prophet Elijah (1 Kings 19:2), and arranged the death of an innocent man named Naboth by writing letters in the king’s name and using false witnesses, so Ahab could take his vineyard (1 Kings 21:8-16). The Bible’s charges against Jezebel are murder, idol worship and abuse of power.

Who was the Jezebel in Revelation 2:20?

The Jezebel in Revelation 2:20 was a woman in the church at Thyatira who called herself a prophetess and taught believers to eat food offered to idols and to commit sexual sin. Many scholars think “Jezebel” was a nickname comparing her to the Old Testament queen and not her real name. Jesus says in Revelation 2:21, “I gave her space to repent,” meaning she was given time to change.

What should I do if someone says I have a Jezebel spirit?

Read Revelation 2:18-24 and compare it honestly with your own actions. The passage names specific behaviour: teaching people toward idols and sexual sin. It does not name confidence, leadership or disagreement. Write down what you actually did, share it with a trusted person outside the situation, and remember that Jesus gave even the woman in Thyatira time to repent before any judgment.
        <div
