Or the nurse has said the kind thing nurses say and walked you to the door. You made it as far as the car. The key is in your hand, and your hand is not moving.

The Short above is a prayer for the loss of a loved one, written for exactly this minute: “God, I just said goodbye to someone I love, and I can’t make myself start the car.” Before the prayer even begins, it tells you something you may need more than the prayer. “Nothing is wrong with you. Grief takes its time.”

Forty-six seconds can say that. It cannot show you that the Bible wrote this scene down, almost to the detail.

A Prayer for the Loss of a Loved One Begins With Two Women Who Sat

Late on the day Jesus died, a man named Joseph did everything that needed doing. He asked for the body. He wrapped it in clean linen. He laid it in a tomb cut from rock, rolled a great stone across the door, “and departed” (Matthew 27:60).

Then Matthew adds one more sentence.

“And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre” (Matthew 27:61).

“Over against” is older English for opposite. The Greek word underneath it, apenanti, means directly across from. So the picture is plain. The stone is shut, the practical man has left, there is nothing more to do, and two women are sitting there looking at a closed door.

That is the car park. That is you, with the engine off.

Notice what Matthew leaves out. He doesn’t say they should have gone. He doesn’t say how long they stayed. Nobody walks over to tell them it is time. He simply records that they sat, as if the sitting were a part of the story worth keeping.

Now the hard part, because it would be easy to make this neater than it is. Nothing happened that evening. Matthew records no angel, no voice, no sudden peace. The stone stayed shut and the night came on. If you are in the car waiting to feel something from God and you feel nothing at all, you are not being passed over. You are in a part of the story the Gospels tell honestly.

The Short’s prayer seems to know this. “I don’t need you to explain this. I just need you close.” It asks for no reasons. That Friday evening, nobody was given any.

What They Did Next Is the Part Most People Miss

Luke follows the same women a few hours further.

“And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment” (Luke 23:55-56).

Read it as a record of what grieving people actually did in the first day:

They looked. They “beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.” They needed to see where Jesus was and that the body had been handled gently.

They went home. “They returned.” The hardest walk of their lives gets two words.

They did one small thing with their hands. They “prepared spices and ointments.”

They stopped. They “rested the sabbath day.”

The spices are the detail to hold on to. John says another man, Nicodemus, had already brought “a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight,” and that the body was wound in linen “with the spices” (John 19:39-40). Whether the women knew how much had been done, the Gospels don’t say. They prepared theirs anyway. Love still needed somewhere to go, so it went into their hands.

The Short asks for the same thing in its last line: “help me carry their love with me, not only the loss.” On the first night, that can be as small as phoning their oldest friend so the news comes from someone who loved them.

And then the women rested, on a day with no answers in it. Luke gives their Saturday half a verse.

One honest caution. Those women were given a Sunday morning nobody else has had. Your loss will not be undone in three days, and I won’t pretend it will. What carries over is smaller and still solid: Scripture did not skip the sitting, the trip home or the empty day after. And for the moment the Short describes as “when it hits me out of nowhere,” there is an old line too. “When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up” (Psalm 94:18). The holding came at the slipping. Not before it.

Actions to Take This Week

Sit for five more minutes before you drive and say out loud, “God, I just need you close.”

Text one person the words “I’m heading home now” so that someone is waiting to hear you got there.

Do one small thing with your hands tonight for the person you lost, such as setting their photo where you will see it in the morning.

A Prayer for the Loss of a Loved One

God, I have just said goodbye and I don’t know what to do with my hands. Then I read that two women sat facing a closed tomb, and nobody told them to leave.

#PrayerForGrief #LossOfALovedOne #GriefTakesItsTime #OneBreathPrayer

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for the Loss of a Loved One

What is a short prayer for the loss of a loved one?

A short prayer for the loss of a loved one is: “God, I just said goodbye to someone I love. I don’t need you to explain this. I just need you close. When it hits me out of nowhere, hold me up, and help me carry their love with me, not only the loss. Amen.” It asks for God’s nearness instead of reasons, and it can be prayed as many times as needed.

What does the Bible say to someone who has just lost a loved one?

The Bible shows people who have just lost a loved one being allowed to stay, to weep and to rest. After Jesus was buried, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sat facing the closed tomb (Matthew 27:61), and Luke 23:56 says the women went home, prepared spices and rested. Psalm 94:18 speaks to the worst moments: “When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.”

Is it normal to not want to leave after a funeral?

Not wanting to leave after a funeral, a burial or a hospital goodbye is very common in early grief, because leaving can feel like making the loss real. Matthew 27:60-61 records that after Joseph of Arimathaea closed the tomb of Jesus and departed, two women stayed sitting opposite it, and the text offers no criticism of them. Staying a while is not a failure to cope.

What does “sitting over against the sepulchre” mean?

“Sitting over against the sepulchre” in Matthew 27:61 means sitting opposite the tomb, facing it. “Over against” is older English for “across from,” translating the Greek word apenanti, and “sepulchre” is an older word for a tomb. The verse describes Mary Magdalene and another Mary remaining at the grave of Jesus on the evening of the burial.

How do you pray when you are too sad to find words?

When you are too sad to find words, a prayer can be one sentence, or someone else’s sentence borrowed and repeated. “God, I just need you close” is a complete prayer. Romans 8:26 says “the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered,” so prayer does not depend on finding the right words.

When You Do Turn the Key

You will start the car. Not because the grief is finished, but because the women went home too, and going home was no betrayal of the one they had sat with. Until then, leave the engine off as long as you need. Then take the love with you.

If the next two days are full of things you have never had to do before, what to do when someone dies walks through the first 48 hours one step at a time.
