Maybe it’s in your mother’s closet, under a tiny white gown and a card signed by people you’ve never met. It was lit once, for a few minutes, on a day you can’t remember.

That was your first Catholic prayer candle. Nobody bought it for the smell. Nobody picked it for the color. Someone lit it, handed it to the people who loved you, and gave them one job.

So if you’re looking for a Catholic prayer candle today, for your own shelf or for a godchild or a friend, it helps to start where the tradition starts. Not at the store. At the font.

What Counts as a Catholic Prayer Candle?

The phrase covers more than one thing, which is why the search results look so mixed. In plain terms:

Votive candles and vigil lights. The small candles people light in church as a sign of a prayer. We wrote a full guide to what votive and vigil really mean.

Tall glass devotional candles. The kind sold in Catholic goods stores, often with an image of Jesus, Mary or a saint and a printed prayer.

Blessed candles. Ordinary candles a priest has prayed a blessing over. Here is where that blessing actually comes from.

The baptismal candle. The one almost everybody forgets, and the one that explains all the others.

In every case the candle is a sign. It doesn’t make a prayer stronger or carry it any farther. It is a way of praying with your hands and your eyes as well as your words.

The Candle That Was Handed to You

Near the end of a Catholic baptism, after the water, the priest or deacon says five words: “Receive the light of Christ.” Someone from the family, often the father or a godparent, lights a small white candle from the tall Easter candle (also called the Paschal candle) that stands near the font.

What comes next is the part worth slowing down for. The celebrant turns to the parents and godparents and tells them “this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly.” The child, the rite goes on, is to “walk always as a child of the light.”

Two words in that sentence do a lot of work.

Entrusted. A baby can’t hold a flame. So the light is given to someone else to hold until the child can carry it. Nearly every person of faith got started this way, whatever church they grew up in. Somebody held the light for them first. A grandmother. A Sunday school teacher. A friend who prayed when they couldn’t.

Kept. Not “lit.” Kept. The candle isn’t the event. The keeping is.

And look at where that little flame comes from. Each year the big Easter candle is first lit in the dark, at the Easter Vigil, while an ancient song called the Exsultet is sung over it. One line describes its flame as “a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light” (the full text is on the U.S. bishops’ website). That is the whole idea of a prayer candle in one sentence. Light is the one thing you can give away without having any less of it.

That same Easter candle is placed near the coffin at a Catholic funeral. The light you were handed at the beginning is still standing there at the end.

What Jesus Said About Candles in Drawers

The baptism words lean on the Bible. Paul wrote, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8, KJV). And Jesus, who said “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12, KJV), once said something about candles that lands a little close if yours is in a shoebox:

“Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” (Matthew 5:15, KJV)

A bushel was a basket. Jesus is saying nobody lights a candle and then hides it under one. But that is close to what happens to plenty of baptismal candles, and to plenty of faith. Lit once, with everyone watching, then packed away with the gown.

There’s no guilt in that. A baptismal candle is a thin taper. It was never built for every day. But the instruction was “kept burning,” and keeping takes something you can light on an ordinary Tuesday. (Jesus stood in the water too, by the way. Here is why Jesus got baptized.)

That everyday job is what a home prayer candle is for. Ours each carry a Bible verse on the glass, so every time you strike the match, the words are right there in front of you.

See the Prayer Candles

A Prayer for Lighting a Catholic Prayer Candle at Home

Here is a short prayer for the moment the wick catches. Pray it slowly. Change any word that doesn’t sound like you.

God, long before I could hold a candle, someone held one for me.
Thank You for the people who kept the light when I couldn’t.
Tonight I’m lighting this one myself.
Where I have packed my faith away in a drawer, bring it back out.
Where someone I love is in the dark, let me hold the light for them,
the way it was once held for me.
Jesus, You are the light of the world.
Teach me to walk as a child of light, today, in this house, with these people.
Amen.

One small idea to go with it. Some families take the baptismal candle out once a year, on the anniversary of the baptism, light it at dinner, and say a short prayer of thanks. If you don’t know your baptism date, the parish where you were baptized keeps it on record. It’s worth a phone call.

Choosing a Catholic Prayer Candle for Your Home

A few honest pointers, depending on what you’re really after:

If you want a saint candle or a church-style votive, a Catholic goods store or your parish shop is the right place. That is a specific devotion, and they know it well.

If you want a blessed candle, you can ask your priest to bless one you already own, the same way people bring rosaries and medals.

If you want Scripture in front of you every day, look at a scripture candle. Ours are non-denominational Christian. They are not saint candles or votives, and we don’t sell them as blessed. What they carry is a Bible verse on the front, which Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox believers all share.

Whatever you choose, pick a sturdy glass jar, set it on a steady surface away from curtains, and never leave it burning in an empty room.

Keeping the Light, One Verse at a Time

A baptismal candle gets lit once. A candle on the kitchen shelf gets lit on Tuesday, and again on Thursday, and again on the morning the test results come in. That is what “kept burning” looks like in a real house.

Every MyCandlePrayers candle carries a Bible verse in faith-centered artwork on the front, so don’t pick by holiday. Choose the verse that fits. The Empty Tomb – Jesus Is Risen is a natural match for a baptism anniversary, since the baptismal flame comes from the Easter candle. Be Strong & Courageous suits a teenager getting ready for Confirmation. Jesus Praying belongs in a prayer corner. And if you’re buying for a godchild’s parents or a friend, choose the verse that fits them and the season they’re in.

Then there’s the part on the back. Every candle has a QR code that opens 100+ written prayers organized by need: strength, healing, peace, gratitude, guidance, protection. No app, no account, no subscription. So on the mornings you have no words, the words are already written and waiting.

The candle itself is 9 oz of eco-friendly soy wax with a 50-60 hour burn, in a reusable glass vessel. When the wax is gone, the glass stays. It would make a good place to stand a thin white baptismal candle, finally out of the shoebox.

Somebody held the light for you once. Now it’s yours to keep.

Choose Your Prayer Candle

Questions People Are Asking

Q: What is a Catholic prayer candle?
A: A Catholic prayer candle is a candle lit as a visible sign of prayer. The phrase can mean a small votive or vigil light in church, a tall glass devotional candle with a saint’s image, a candle a priest has blessed, or the baptismal candle given at baptism. In each case the candle is a sign of the prayer. It does not make the prayer work or carry it any farther.

Q: What is said when the candle is lit at a Catholic baptism?
A: The priest or deacon says, “Receive the light of Christ,” and a small candle is lit from the Easter (Paschal) candle. The parents and godparents are then told “this light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly,” and that the child is to “walk always as a child of the light.” The words echo Ephesians 5:8 (KJV): “walk as children of light.”

Q: What do you do with a baptismal candle after the baptism?
A: Keep it. Many families store it with the baptism gown, and some relight it each year on the anniversary of the baptism with a short prayer of thanks. If you don’t know the date, the parish where the baptism took place keeps a record of it.

Q: Can a Catholic use a non-denominational scripture candle as a prayer candle at home?
A: Yes. A home prayer candle doesn’t have to be a church votive or a saint candle. A scripture candle with a Bible verse on the glass fits naturally in a Catholic prayer corner beside a crucifix, a rosary or a Bible, and a priest can bless it if you ask. If you’d like one, you can see which verse candle fits your season.

Q: Are MyCandlePrayers candles blessed Catholic candles?
A: No. They are non-denominational Christian scripture candles, not saint candles or votives, and they are not sold as blessed. Each 9 oz soy candle carries a Bible verse on the front and a QR code that opens 100+ written prayers organized by need, with no app or account required. You can choose the verse that fits them on the candle page.

                <div
