Then you get home, sit on the edge of the bed, and realize you have no idea what a relationship with God is supposed to look like on a Wednesday night.

With a friend, you know what to do. You call. You show up. You hear their voice. But God is not sitting across the table, and when you try to pray it can feel like talking into an empty room. So you start to wonder if everyone else got something you didn’t. Here is the good news: the first people who walked with Jesus started in exactly the same place, and the very first thing He asked of them was simpler than anything you are worried about.

Take the First Step

The First Job Description Jesus Ever Gave

In Mark chapter 3, Jesus goes up a mountain and calls twelve ordinary men to Himself. Mark then tells us why He chose them. Read the order carefully:

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach” (Mark 3:14, KJV)

Before the preaching. Before any assignment at all, the first reason on the list was this: that they should be with him.

Not “get it right.” Just be with Him. Eat with Him, walk the roads with Him, listen to Him talk, and watch what He did with people.

For the first followers of Jesus, the relationship did not start as a feeling or a skill. It started as time in His company. And time is something you can actually give, even on a tired Wednesday.

Why a Relationship With God Feels So Far Away

Most of us try to build a relationship with God the way we would study for a test. We collect facts, try to say the right words in prayer, and wait for a warm feeling that proves it is working.

When the feeling does not come, we decide we are bad at this.

But think about how you got close to the people you love most. It was not by memorizing facts about them. It was by being around them long enough that you knew what they would say before they said it.

Jesus put it in exactly those terms on the last night before the cross:

“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” (John 15:15, KJV)

Look at what makes someone a friend in that verse. A servant just takes orders. A friend gets told what is going on, because a friend is close enough to hear it.

The Question Philip Asked That Changes Everything

Here is a detail most people read right past, and it may be the most comforting one.

On that same last night, after years of walking beside Jesus, one of the twelve still felt like God was far away. His name was Philip, and he said what a lot of us are thinking:

“Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” (John 14:8-9, KJV)

Philip had seen the miracles and heard the sermons, and he still wanted one clear look at God that would finally settle it.

Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not tell Philip to try harder, pray longer, or feel more. He pointed at Himself. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

That is the gold here for anyone who feels God is far off. You are not asked to reach into an empty sky. You are given a face, a voice, and a life to look at. The way Jesus touched the sick man nobody touched. The way He let children climb into His arms. The way He stopped for people the crowd walked past. That is what God is like, and you can read it, today, in the Gospels.

What This Changes About Your Ordinary Day

So a relationship with God is not a mystery you have to crack. It is the same thing Jesus offered those first twelve: be with Him. In real life, that can be very small.

Spend a few minutes with His life, not just His rules. Read one short scene from Mark or John. Watch what Jesus does. Ask, “What does this show me about God?”

Talk back honestly. Prayer in a relationship sounds like talking, not reciting. Tell God what you noticed, what you don’t understand, and what is weighing on you today. (If you are not sure where to begin, here is how Jesus’ own friends learned to pray.)

Come back tomorrow. Closeness grows from showing up again, not from one big moment. Missing a day does not end a friendship. Coming back is the whole point.

Don’t grade it by your feelings. Some mornings will feel warm and some will feel flat. Philip felt far away after years at Jesus’ side, and Jesus still called him a friend. If the flat days worry you, this may help: I feel nothing when I read the Bible.

Picture a few weeks of that. You wake up to someone you are getting to know, not a list you are behind on. A story from Monday comes back to you in the car on Thursday. When something hard happens, you already have a picture of how Jesus treats a person in trouble, because you have watched Him do it. That is a relationship with God growing the way every real relationship grows: one ordinary day at a time.

A Simple Way to Start Being With Him

That one-day-at-a-time rhythm is exactly why we made 30 Days Walking with Jesus. It walks through the life of Jesus one day at a time, as a beginner-friendly reading plan through the Gospels, so each morning you are spending time with Him, just like those first twelve. Each day takes under 10 minutes. It includes 30 short devotional videos (each under 60 seconds), 30 full-chapter audio readings, a complete PDF study guide with journal prompts, and 5 quick-reference scripture guides. If you like the idea of walking alongside Him, our post on what walking with Jesus really looks like is a good companion read.

And it is free. No payment, no card, no upsell, and yours to keep forever on any device. We made it that way on purpose, because the words of Jesus should not sit behind a paywall.

Jesus’ first ask was simple: be with Him. You can start that tomorrow morning.

Start Day 1 Today

Questions People Are Asking

Q: How do I start a relationship with God?
A: Start by spending time with Jesus, because the Bible presents Jesus as the clearest picture of what God is like. In John 14:9 Jesus says, “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” A simple way to begin is to read one short scene from the Gospel of Mark or John each day, then talk to God honestly about what you read. A few unhurried minutes, repeated day after day, is how the relationship grows.

Q: What does it mean to have a relationship with God?
A: It means knowing God personally, not just knowing facts about God. When Jesus first chose His twelve disciples, Mark 3:14 says the first reason was “that they should be with him.” A relationship with God is built the same way any close relationship is: by spending time together, listening, and talking honestly.

Q: Why does God feel so far away when I pray?
A: Many people feel this, including the first followers of Jesus. In John 14, after years with Jesus, Philip still asked Him to “shew us the Father.” Jesus did not tell him to try harder. Jesus pointed to Himself and said that seeing Him was seeing the Father. If God feels distant, reading about the life of Jesus in the Gospels gives you a real face and voice to come back to, and feelings often follow time rather than lead it.

Q: Can I have a relationship with God if I don’t understand the Bible?
A: Yes. The disciples did not understand everything either, and Jesus still called them friends in John 15:15. You do not need to understand the whole Bible to begin. The Gospels, which tell the story of Jesus’ life, are a beginner-friendly place to start. The free 30 Days Walking with Jesus plan walks through them one day at a time in under 10 minutes a day.

            <div
