Not a map. Not a globe on a desk. The real thing, small enough to cover with your thumb, with every person you have ever loved somewhere on it.

A few hundred people have seen that with their own eyes. Many of them came home saying the same strange thing: it changed them, and they could not quite explain how. That change has a name. It is called the overview effect, and every month thousands of people look it up, usually after seeing a photo from space and feeling a little something themselves.

Here is what it is, where the name came from, what the research actually found, and the part most explanations leave out: the same view has sent astronauts home with very different answers.

What Is the Overview Effect?

The overview effect is a shift in how a person sees the world after seeing Earth from space. People who have it often describe three things at once:

Smallness. The planet looks tiny and thin against the dark. You feel very small too.

Unity. From up there you cannot see borders. The lines people fight over are not visible. It looks like one home.

Fragility. The air we breathe looks like a thin blue skin around the planet. It suddenly looks easy to break.

Many astronauts say the feeling came on fast and strong, sometimes with tears, and that it stayed with them for years after they landed.

The name comes from a writer named Frank White, not an astronaut. He talked with many people who had flown in space, and in 1987 he published a book called The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution. He gave a name to something astronauts had been trying to describe for decades.

The Photo That Started It All: Earthrise

In December 1968, three men became the first people ever to fly around the Moon. Their mission was called Apollo 8. The crew was Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders.

Their job was the Moon. They were there to study it and photograph it, to scout for future landings. But on Christmas Eve, as their ship came around from the far side, Anders saw the Earth rising over the grey edge of the Moon. He grabbed a camera. The photo he took is now called Earthrise, and it is one of the most famous pictures ever made.

Anders later summed up the trip in one line that gets quoted all the time: “We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth.”

That same night, the crew sent a live TV broadcast home. They had been told they would have one of the biggest audiences in history, and they did not know what to say. Borman took a friend’s suggestion to go “back to the beginning.” So the three of them took turns reading the opening lines of the creation story from the book of Genesis, starting with Anders: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Borman closed by wishing “God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.” The broadcast is often estimated to have reached around a billion people.

What the Research Says About the Overview Effect

For a long time the overview effect was just stories. In 2016, a team led by the psychologist David Yaden published one of the first serious studies of it, called “The Overview Effect: Awe and Self-Transcendent Experience in Space Flight.” They gathered astronauts’ own written and spoken accounts and looked for what kept coming up.

The same themes appeared again and again:

A strong sense of beauty.

Emotion that was unexpected, and sometimes overwhelming.

A deeper feeling of connection to other people and to the Earth as a whole.

The researchers linked it to awe, the feeling you get in front of something so big your mind has to stretch to take it in. They suggested it comes from two kinds of bigness at once. One is something huge in front of your eyes, like standing at the edge of a giant canyon. The other is a huge idea, like trying to picture forever. In space, both hit together.

It is worth being honest about the limits. The study was built from astronauts’ own accounts, not from a lab test. So it tells us what astronauts report, very clearly. It does not prove that everyone who sees Earth from space feels the same thing.

The Same View, Very Different Answers

This is the part most articles about the overview effect skip, and it may be the most interesting part.

Bill Anders, the man who took Earthrise and read the first line of Genesis to the world, did not come home with stronger faith. Decades later, in a 2018 interview with The Guardian, he said the experience “really undercut my religious beliefs.” Seeing Earth so small made it hard for him to believe that anyone up there was paying attention to one person down here.

The actor William Shatner flew to the edge of space in 2021, at 90 years old. He expected joy. Instead, he wrote later, “my trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.” Looking from the cold black of space back to the warm blue planet filled him with a deep sadness for the world below.

Others came home with a sense of peace, belonging, or wonder that never left them. When the Artemis II crew flew around the Moon in April 2026, the first people to do it in more than fifty years, they photographed Earth setting behind the Moon’s edge, a deliberate nod to the picture Anders had taken. (We wrote about what that crew chose to do next in this piece on the Artemis II astronauts.)

So the overview effect does not hand everyone the same conclusion. What it seems to hand everyone is the same question. You see how small we are, and how much is at stake on that small blue ball, and you have to decide what that smallness means.

Does being small mean you don’t matter? Or does it make it even more surprising that you are here at all?

A Question Asked Long Before Rockets

Here is the strange thing. That question did not start in space.

There is a short poem, around three thousand years old, traditionally credited to a young shepherd who later became a king. It is about the night sky. He looked up, not down. He saw the moon and the stars and felt exactly what Anders and Shatner felt: next to all of that, what is a person? Why would anyone even notice us?

But the poem does not stop at smallness. In the very next breath, the shepherd says that we are noticed. Remembered. Cared for. Given something like a crown. He holds both feelings at once without letting go of either one: you are tiny, and you are not forgotten.

That is the double movement so many astronauts describe, small and connected, humbled and somehow held. The shepherd simply had a name for who was doing the holding. He believed the same God who made the stars was mindful of him. Maybe the overview effect is not new at all. Maybe it is a very old feeling, finally seen from the other side.

Can You Feel the Overview Effect Without Going to Space?

Almost none of us will ever leave the Earth. But awe is not only for astronauts, and you don’t need money or special gear to make room for it.

Look at Earthrise slowly. Find the photo and give it a full minute. Remember that every person who has ever lived is somewhere in that blue curve.

Go outside at night. Even in a city you can usually find the Moon. Look up the way the shepherd did.

Find a high place. A hill, a rooftop, the top floor of a building. Watching a whole town at once can give you a small taste of the view from above.

Play with the size of things. Our free How Old Is the Universe? explorer lets you feel just how big, and how old, our home really is.

None of these will feel like orbit. But they can move you a step back from the one problem filling your whole view today, which is part of what the astronauts brought home.

The View From Here

Most of us live with our faces close to our own lives: the bills, the to-do list, the argument we keep replaying. The overview effect is what happens when someone gets pulled far enough back to see the whole thing at once.

You don’t have to fly to the Moon to ask the question it raises. Tonight, if the sky is clear, step outside and look up for a minute. You are very small under all of that. And you are still here, still seen by someone, still in the middle of a story that isn’t over yet.

If that question is one you’d like to keep sitting with, here is a good place to start:

A good place to start:
The Beginner’s Guide to Feeling God’s Presence Every Day
A short, simple guide to noticing God in the ordinary moments of real life, even on the busy, small-feeling days.
Get the free guide
Free.

Discussion Question

If you could see the whole Earth from space just once, do you think it would make you feel more small, or more connected? Astronauts who experience it often describe feeling very small, seeing the planet as one fragile home without visible borders, and feeling a deeper connection to other people. The term was coined by writer Frank White in his 1987 book The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution.

Who coined the term overview effect?

The term “overview effect” was coined by Frank White, an American writer who interviewed many astronauts about their experiences. He introduced it in his 1987 book The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution. White was not an astronaut himself; he named a feeling that astronauts had been describing since the early years of spaceflight.

Do all astronauts experience the overview effect?

No. Many astronauts describe awe, beauty and a stronger sense of connection after seeing Earth from space, but their reactions differ. Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders said in a 2018 interview that the experience undercut his religious beliefs, while actor William Shatner said his 2021 suborbital flight felt like a funeral and filled him with sadness. A 2016 study led by psychologist David Yaden found common themes in astronauts’ accounts but did not show that every astronaut has the same experience.

What did the Apollo 8 astronauts read from space?

On Christmas Eve 1968, the Apollo 8 crew of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders read the first ten verses of the book of Genesis during a live television broadcast while orbiting the Moon. Each astronaut read part of the creation account, beginning with “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Borman closed the broadcast by wishing God’s blessing on “all of you on the good Earth.”

Can you experience the overview effect on Earth?

The full overview effect is linked to seeing Earth from space, but the awe behind it can be felt on the ground. Researchers connect the overview effect to awe, which comes from facing something vast, such as a huge landscape, a night sky full of stars, or a big idea like the age of the universe. Looking slowly at the Earthrise photograph, watching the night sky, or viewing a whole town from a high place are free ways to experience a small version of that feeling.
        <div
