No glowing galaxies. Nothing shining anywhere. Astronomers call this stretch the cosmic dark ages, and almost nobody has ever tried to see it, because there was nothing in it to see.

Now a team led by the University of Cambridge wants to do something stranger than see it. They want to hear it. Their plan is a satellite about the size of a suitcase, called CosmoCube, that would circle the Moon and listen from the far side, where Earth’s noise can’t reach. The design was laid out in a paper in the journal Nature Astronomy this year, and shared by the university this week.

It is a small machine chasing the oldest, quietest thing there is. Here is how it would work, and why it matters.

What Were the Cosmic Dark Ages?

Start at the beginning, or close to it.

After the Big Bang, the young universe was hot and bright. As it spread out and cooled, that first glow faded. Scientists can still pick up what is left of it today as a faint haze of microwaves across the whole sky.

Then came the dark.

For roughly 150 million years after that afterglow, the universe was mostly a thin fog of hydrogen gas drifting in the black. The first stars had not switched on yet. There were no galaxies. If you could have floated there, you would have seen nothing.

That is the cosmic dark ages. It ended with what scientists call “Cosmic Dawn,” when the very first stars finally lit up.

Here is the problem for anyone who wants to study it. Telescopes like the James Webb catch light. But the dark ages had no light to catch. So how do you look at a time when nothing was shining?

How Do You Hear the Universe Before the First Star?

You listen to the hydrogen.

Hydrogen atoms give off a very faint radio signal with a wavelength of 21 centimeters. It is so weak that a single atom would never be noticed. But the dark ages were full of hydrogen, and all of it together made a whisper that should still be traveling through space today, more than 13.5 billion years later.

Over all that time, the universe kept stretching, and the whisper stretched with it. By now it has become a very long, very low radio wave. CosmoCube is built to listen between 10 and 100 megahertz, the low part of the radio dial where that stretched signal should be.

That part of the dial is exactly where Earth is loudest. Radio, TV, phones and power lines all spill out noise. On top of that, the upper layer of our atmosphere bends and scrambles low radio waves before they reach the ground.

Professor Eloy de Lera Acedo, who leads the project, put it this way when the idea was first presented: “It’s like trying to hear that whisper while a loud concert is playing next door.”

Why the Far Side of the Moon?

Because the Moon is a wall.

When a satellite swings behind the Moon, the whole Moon sits between it and Earth. All of our radio noise gets blocked. No atmosphere, no phones, no concert next door.

CosmoCube’s plan is simple. Every two hours it would loop around the Moon. For about 40 minutes of each loop, the Moon would block Earth completely, and the satellite would listen. Over a two-year mission, the team hopes to gather around 1,000 hours of quiet listening.

“The far side of the Moon is really the only option,” de Lera Acedo said. “It solves multiple problems at once, opening a clear window to the very early universe.”

Inside the small box is a tiny, carefully tuned radio receiver, plus a built-in reference that lets the team keep checking the machine against itself, so they can tell the difference between a signal from the sky and a hum from their own electronics. The spacecraft body is being built by Surrey Space Technology in the UK, with partners at the University of Portsmouth and STFC RAL Space. The team is aiming for a cost under 50 million euros and a launch within about five years.

If you follow the Moon news, this is part of a bigger picture. The Moon is slowly turning into a place we go to learn things we can’t learn from home, from moonquakes that may reveal hidden ice to quiet places like this one.

The Part Nobody Mentions: This Whisper Has Fooled Scientists Before

It is worth being honest about how hard this is, because the history is surprising.

In 2018, a small radio experiment in the Australian outback called EDGES announced that it had picked up a hydrogen signal from Cosmic Dawn, the moment right after the dark ages when the first stars came on. It was big news. The signal was deeper than the standard theories expected, and some scientists wondered if it pointed to strange new physics.

Then another team checked. An Indian instrument called SARAS 3, floated on lakes in southern India to get cleaner readings, went looking for the same signal. In 2022 its team reported that they found no sign of it. Their data rejected the EDGES signal with about 95% confidence.

Nobody is saying anyone cheated. The lesson is how faint this whisper is. It is easy to hear your own equipment, or the ground, or the sky’s other noise, and mistake it for the early universe. That is the whole reason CosmoCube is going to the Moon, and why it carries a way to keep checking itself.

So it’s fair to be careful about what we say. CosmoCube has not heard anything yet. It has not launched. It is a design with lab prototypes being tested. If it works, it will be the first clear listen to an era no human has ever measured directly. If it doesn’t, we will still learn a lot about what that era was not.

The Dark Wasn’t Empty

Here is the detail that stays with me.

We call it the dark ages, and it sounds like nothing was happening. But the scientists say the opposite. That long darkness was when gravity, and the unseen stuff they call dark matter, was quietly pulling the hydrogen together into clumps. De Lera Acedo hopes CosmoCube will show “the role of dark matter in the early universe, how it worked to pull together hydrogen into the first stars and galaxies.”

In other words, the dark was a workshop. Every star that would ever shine was being gathered in it, long before a single one lit up.

It’s funny how old that idea is. The oldest creation story many of us grew up with starts in exactly this place: darkness over the deep, before any light, and God already at work in it. People have read that line for thousands of years as a picture of their own lives, the seasons where nothing seems to be happening and the lights have not come on yet. It turns out the universe itself began that way. The dark came first. The light was being prepared inside it.

If you’re in a stretch like that right now, that might be worth carrying around for a while.

What Happens Next

For now, CosmoCube is a plan, a paper, and a few prototypes on lab benches. The team is testing how the parts handle the cold, shaking and radiation of space. If all goes well, a small box will someday slip behind the Moon, go quiet for 40 minutes, and listen for a whisper that left its hydrogen more than 13.5 billion years ago.

It’s a lovely thing to picture. A tiny machine, alone in the silence, waiting to hear the part of the story that came before the first light.

If you enjoy big questions like this, you might like our look at whether the universe is infinite, or the oldest complex-life fossils ever found, which waited a very long time for their moment too.

Discussion Question

If CosmoCube does hear the cosmic dark ages, what do you think would be the most exciting thing to learn from it: how the first stars formed, what dark matter really is, or something nobody has thought to ask yet? Us. Earth’s radio noise is so loud that the only quiet place left is the far side of the Moon.

Questions People Ask About the Cosmic Dark Ages

What are the cosmic dark ages?

The cosmic dark ages are the period in the early universe after the afterglow of the Big Bang faded and before the first stars formed. It lasted roughly 150 million years. During that time the universe was mostly thin hydrogen gas with no stars or galaxies, so there was no light to see.

What is CosmoCube?

CosmoCube is a proposed suitcase-sized satellite led by the University of Cambridge. It is designed to orbit the Moon and listen, from the Moon’s far side, for a faint radio signal from hydrogen in the cosmic dark ages. The team aims to launch it within about five years.

Why do scientists want to listen from the far side of the Moon?

The far side of the Moon is shielded from Earth’s radio noise, because the Moon itself blocks it. The signal from the cosmic dark ages sits in low radio frequencies where Earth’s broadcasts and upper atmosphere cause heavy interference, so the lunar far side is one of the few quiet places to listen.

What is the 21-centimeter hydrogen signal?

The 21-centimeter signal is a faint radio emission given off by hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen from the early universe produced this signal, and the expansion of the universe has since stretched it into very long, low-frequency radio waves. Detecting it would let scientists study the universe before the first stars existed.

Has anyone detected a signal from the early universe’s hydrogen yet?

Not in a way scientists agree on. In 2018 the EDGES experiment reported a hydrogen signal from Cosmic Dawn, the era just after the dark ages, but in 2022 the SARAS 3 experiment found no evidence of that signal. The cosmic dark ages themselves have never been directly measured.
