You check. Nothing, or the wrong thing. You put it face down on the floor beside you and tell yourself you won&#8217;t do that again. Four minutes later, you do.<\/p>\n\n<p>The prayer for a broken heart in the Short above catches that exact motion, and then it asks for almost nothing. No explanation. No fix. &#8220;I don&#8217;t need all the answers tonight. Just come close.&#8221; Then one more request: &#8220;Get me through tonight and meet me in the morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>It sounds like a small prayer. It is actually built on two of the oldest promises in the Psalms.<\/p>\n\n<h2>A Prayer for a Broken Heart Starts With &#8220;Come Close&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p>The verse people reach for at a time like this is Psalm 34:18: &#8220;The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Look at the two Hebrew phrases doing the work there. &#8220;Broken heart&#8221; is <em>nishbere lev<\/em>, from <em>shabar<\/em>, the ordinary verb for shattering something, the same word used for smashing a clay pot. &#8220;Contrite spirit&#8221; is <em>dakke ruach<\/em>, and <em>daka<\/em> means crushed or ground down. Spirit, <em>ruach<\/em>, is also the word for breath. Read literally, the verse describes a person in pieces and a person who can barely breathe.<\/p>\n\n<p>And the promise is not that God fixes them first. It is that God is <em>nigh<\/em>. Near. The Short&#8217;s request, &#8220;just come close,&#8221; turns out to be the one thing this verse says is already true.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is the complication worth sitting with. Psalm 34 was not written from a peaceful place. Its heading links it to the time David fled from King Saul to a Philistine city and, afraid for his life, &#8220;feigned himself mad&#8221; in front of its king, scratching at the gate and letting spit run down his beard (1 Samuel 21:13). That is the man who wrote &#8220;This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him&#8221; (Psalm 34:6). The nearness he describes was not something he felt while composed. He found it while humiliated, alone and on the run.<\/p>\n\n<p>So if you do not feel God close right now, the verse is not broken. David wrote it about the worst day he could remember.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Weeping Is a Guest That Stays One Night<\/h2>\n\n<p>The second half of the Short, &#8220;get me through tonight and meet me in the morning,&#8221; has a direct ancestor in Psalm 30:5: &#8220;weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Most people hear that as a cheerful slogan. The Hebrew is more careful than that. The verb translated &#8220;endure&#8221; is <em>yalin<\/em>, which means to lodge, to stay the night. It is travelling language. Weeping is pictured as a guest who arrives in the evening and takes the spare room. Nobody pretends it is not in the house.<\/p>\n\n<p>What the verse promises is about the lease, not the pain. A lodger checks out. And what arrives in the morning is <em>rinnah<\/em>, which is not a quiet feeling of being okay. It is a ringing shout, the sound people make when something good finally happens.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two honest cautions:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;A night&#8221; is poetry, not a timetable.<\/strong> Heartbreak often takes far longer than one evening. The psalm&#8217;s point is that sorrow is a visitor rather than the owner of the house.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Morning does not mean pretending.<\/strong> The same psalm says &#8220;Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing&#8221; (Psalm 30:11). Mourning came first, and it was real.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>That is why the Short&#8217;s prayer is so wise. It does not ask for joy tonight. It asks for company tonight and for God to be there when the lodger leaves.<\/p>\n\n<p>One more thread most readers miss. Isaiah 61:1 says the Anointed One was sent &#8220;to bind up the brokenhearted.&#8221; When Jesus read from that scroll in Nazareth, the King James Version has him say he was sent &#8220;to heal the brokenhearted&#8221; (Luke 4:18). Some of the oldest surviving manuscripts of Luke leave that phrase out, which is why several modern translations skip it. But it stands in Isaiah either way, and it is the job description Jesus claimed for himself. Broken hearts were on the list from the beginning. Just stay in this room with me while the hurt lodges here. Get me through the dark hours, and when morning comes, be the first thing waiting for me. Scripture treats tears as something God keeps and remembers.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Until the Lodger Leaves<\/h2>\n\n<p>The phone is still face down on the floor. Leave it there. Tonight you don&#8217;t need to fix anything.
