You have been awake for hours. Your phone is somewhere in the sheets, and getting up feels like lifting a car.

The prayer for depression in the Short above starts right there: “God, I’m still in bed and I don’t know how to get up.” Then it asks for surprisingly little. Not a cure. Not a breakthrough. It asks God to stay, for enough strength for one small thing, and for someone to tell.

Those three requests are older than they look. One of them was made, almost word for word, by Jesus.

“Tarry Ye Here, and Watch With Me”

On the night before the cross, Jesus took three friends into the garden of Gethsemane. Matthew says he “began to be sorrowful and very heavy” (Matthew 26:37). Heavy. The same word people with depression reach for when every other word fails.

Then he said this: “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me” (Matthew 26:38).

Read that next to the Short. “Just stay here with me.” Jesus did not ask Peter, James and John to fix anything. He did not ask them to explain the night. He asked them to stay close while he carried it. And when he prayed, he did ask for the cup to pass. It did not pass. What he received, in Luke’s account, was strength to go through it: “there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:43). That verse is missing from some early manuscripts, which is worth knowing. But the shape of the story holds in every Gospel. The night was not cancelled. He was given enough to walk into it.

That is exactly what “I’m not asking you to fix everything today” means. It is not a small-faith prayer. It is a Gethsemane prayer.

Now the part that should not be smoothed over. The friends fell asleep. Three times. “What, could ye not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). If you work up the courage to tell someone how heavy it is and they get it wrong, change the subject or go quiet, you are in good company. Jesus asked for help from people who let him down, and asked again anyway.

And look at how Luke describes those sleeping disciples: “he found them sleeping for sorrow” (Luke 22:45). Not sleeping from laziness. Sleeping because grief had worn them out. The Bible noticed, two thousand years ago, that sorrow can pin a body down. The Short says it plainly: you’re not lazy, and you’re not the only one.

The Psalm That Never Cheers Up

Most sad psalms turn a corner. They start in the pit and end with “yet will I praise.” Psalm 88 does not. It is credited to Heman the Ezrahite, and it is widely called the darkest prayer in the Bible.

Some of its lines read like a description of a bad day in bed:

The exhaustion: “I am as a man that hath no strength” (Psalm 88:4).

The stuck feeling: “I am shut up, and I cannot come forth” (Psalm 88:8).

The length of it: “I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up” (Psalm 88:15). This is not one bad week.

The loneliness: “Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness” (Psalm 88:18).

That last verse is the end of the psalm. In Hebrew, the very last word is “darkness.” No bow on top.

Here is why that matters for anyone who has prayed and still woke up heavy. This psalm made it into the Bible. It was sung. Someone decided a prayer with no happy ending was still a real prayer, and worth keeping. You do not have to feel better by the end of your prayer for it to count.

And notice what the psalm grieves most at its close: not pain, but the absence of people. “Lover and friend hast thou put far from me.” The Short’s last request, “send me someone I can tell,” is the answer to the exact wound Psalm 88 ends on. Heman could not find his people. The prayer asks God to send one.

There is one more small line worth finding. “In the morning shall my prayer prevent thee” (Psalm 88:13). In 1611 English, “prevent” meant to go before. The writer was praying before the sun was fully up, before any feeling came back. Showing up with nothing is still showing up.

Actions to Take This Week

Text one person a single honest sentence today, such as “I’m having a really heavy day and I wanted someone to know.”

Pick one small thing, like a glass of water, opening the curtain or a shower, and let finishing it count as today’s win.

Save a crisis line in your phone right now (988 in the US and Canada, or find your country’s line at findahelpline.com) so it is there if things get darker.

A Prayer for Depression That Won’t Let Go

God, I am still here, under the weight of it. Even Jesus asked his friends to stay with him in the dark. Tell one person today.

#PrayerForDepression #OneBreathPrayer #YouAreNotAlone #Psalm88 #FaithAndMentalHealth

Q&A: One Breath Prayer for Depression That Won’t Let Go

What is a short prayer for depression?

A short prayer for depression can be as simple as: “God, I’m still in bed and I don’t know how to get up. Stay here with me, give me enough for one small thing, and send me someone I can tell.” It asks for presence, a little strength and one honest connection rather than an instant cure.

Is it a sin to be depressed as a Christian?

Depression is not a sin. The Bible keeps whole prayers of people in deep darkness, including Psalm 88, which says “I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up” and ends without any turn to hope. Heavy sorrow is treated in scripture as suffering to be brought to God, not as a failure of faith.

Is staying in bed all day with depression laziness?

Staying in bed because of depression is not the same as laziness. Luke 22:45 describes Jesus’ disciples as “sleeping for sorrow,” recognising that grief can exhaust the body. If it goes on for weeks, it is worth talking to a doctor, because depression is a real illness that often responds to treatment.

Did Jesus ever feel depressed?

The Gospels do not use the word depression, but they describe Jesus in deep distress. Matthew 26:37-38 says he “began to be sorrowful and very heavy” and told his friends, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.” He knew heaviness from the inside and asked others to stay with him in it.

What is the darkest psalm in the Bible?

Psalm 88, credited to Heman the Ezrahite, is widely considered the darkest psalm. Unlike most laments, it never turns to praise, and in Hebrew its final word is “darkness.” Its place in the Bible shows that an honest prayer with no happy ending is still a real prayer.

Still in Bed, and Still Not Alone

The light on the wall will keep moving whether you get up or not. You don’t need to win the whole day. The Short asks for one small thing and one person, and Gethsemane shows that even Jesus asked for exactly that.

If this feels familiar, you might also find help in a prayer for the person who is too tired to pray.
