Luke records a small moment that’s easy to read past. Jesus finishes praying. Nobody knows how long He’s been at it. And one of His friends, someone who has already watched Him heal the sick and calm a storm, walks up and asks for just one thing: teach us to pray.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

If you’ve ever sat down to pray and not known what to say first, you’re in good company. The people closest to Jesus didn’t know either. What’s worth noticing is how they found out. Nobody handed them a rulebook. They watched Him pray, and afterward they asked. That order is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about how to pray.<\/p>\n\n

They Asked After They Watched<\/h2>\n\n

Here is the verse, word for word:<\/p>\n\n

“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

Read it slowly. “As he was praying… when he ceased.”<\/strong> The question didn’t come out of a class. It came out of watching. Something about the way Jesus prayed made His friends want what He had.<\/p>\n\n

That’s good news if prayer feels stiff or awkward for you. You don’t have to invent it from nothing. You can do what those first friends did: spend time around Jesus, see how He talks with the Father, and let that shape the way you talk too.<\/p>\n\n

The Answer Jesus Gave Was Short<\/h2>\n\n

When they asked, Jesus didn’t give a lecture. He gave them a few plain lines:<\/p>\n\n

“When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.” (Luke 11:2-4, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

You can say it out loud in well under a minute. And it isn’t a magic formula. It reads more like a path you can walk, with a few simple turns:<\/p>\n\n
