It was delivered. Maybe it was even read. And then nothing came back. Not that day, not that week, not ever.

No fight. No goodbye. Just a door that closed so quietly you are not even sure it closed.

If you are asking what is ghosting, that is it. And if it just happened to you, you probably already know it hurts more than it “should.” There is a real reason for that, and researchers have measured it.

What Is Ghosting? The Simple Definition

Ghosting is ending a relationship by simply disappearing. The person stops answering messages and calls, often with no warning and no explanation. Sometimes they also unfollow or block you. They go quiet, like a ghost.

The word got so common that Merriam-Webster added it to its dictionary in February 2017. Its definition: abruptly cutting off all contact with someone by no longer accepting or responding to calls or messages.

It happens in dating most of all. But people also ghost friends, job candidates, employers and even family members. Anywhere two people can keep talking, one of them can stop.

Here is a surprise. In a 2019 study of 554 American adults, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, only about 45% had even heard the word “ghosting.” Yet about 1 in 4 (25.3%) said a romantic partner had done it to them, and about 1 in 5 (21.7%) said they had done it to someone else. Plenty of people had lived it before they had a name for it.

Why Ghosting Hurts More Than a Clear “No”

Most of us assume a direct rejection would feel worse. Hearing “I don’t want to see you again” out loud sounds brutal.

The research says the opposite.

In a 2022 study, psychologists Luca Pancani, Nicolas Aureli and Paolo Riva asked 176 young adults to remember a real breakup. Some had been told directly. Some had been ghosted. The ghosted group reported more negative feelings. They felt more shut out. They felt they had less control. They saw what happened as more unexpected and more unfair.

There was one twist. The people rejected face to face felt more angry at the other person. The ghosted people felt less anger. That sounds like good news, but it is not. When someone gives you a reason, you have somewhere to put your anger. When they give you silence, the only person left in the room to blame is you.

(A fair caveat from the study itself: those relationships had lasted about three years on average, so it may not map perfectly onto a match you chatted with for a week.)

That matches what people who have been ghosted say. Communication researcher Leah LeFebvre, who has studied ghosting for years, has found that people who are ghosted often assume they were the problem. Too needy. Too much. Not enough. The silence gets filled with the worst story they can think of.

If short silences tend to feel like a verdict on your worth, you are not strange. There is a name for that too, and we wrote about it here: what rejection sensitivity is and why a short text can feel like a judgment.

Why Do People Ghost?

This is the part people who have been ghosted rarely get to hear. Most ghosting is not cruelty. It is fear.

Saying “this isn’t working for me” means sitting through a few very uncomfortable minutes. You might see the other person’s face fall. They might argue. They might cry. Disappearing skips all of that. For the person who ghosts, silence feels like the kind option, or at least the easy one.

Researchers have found some other patterns too:

Safety. Sometimes people ghost because an earlier conversation felt threatening or unsafe. In those cases, going quiet can be the wise choice, not the cowardly one.

Beliefs about love. The 2019 study found that people who believe relationships are simply “meant to be or not” rated ghosting as more acceptable. If it was never going to work, why explain?

Friends get ghosted too. People in that same study rated ghosting as more acceptable for ending a friendship than a romance, especially a short one. That may be why so many friendships just quietly fade.

We looked more closely at this side of it, including why the ghoster is usually escaping their own discomfort, in why do people ghost you.

One more thing is worth knowing. Ghosting does not always feel good for the one who does it, either. Research on friendships has found that some people report feeling sad or low after they ghost a friend. Hiding from a hard conversation does not make the hard feelings go away. It just leaves them with nowhere to go.

If You Have Been Ghosted: What Actually Helps

None of these cost money, and none of them need a therapist. They just need a little honesty with yourself.

Name it. Say it plainly: “I was ghosted.” Naming it turns a fog into a fact. You are no longer waiting. Something happened.

Refuse to write their reason for them. Your mind will offer the worst explanation first. You do not know their reason. Very often, it had more to do with their fear than with your worth.

Send one message, then stop. If it helps, send a single calm note like “I haven’t heard from you, so I’ll take that as your answer. I wish you well.” Then close the chat. You are ending the story yourself, instead of leaving it open forever.

Tell one real person. Ghosting makes you feel invisible. Being seen by someone who cares about you is the direct opposite of that.

Notice your pattern. Studies have found that people with a more anxious attachment style are more likely to say they have been ghosted. If that sounds like you, our free What Is My Attachment Style? quiz takes a few minutes and can explain a lot.

If You Are Tempted to Ghost Someone

Maybe you came here from the other side. There is someone you are not replying to, and every day it gets harder to start.

Here is the good news. A kind goodbye does not need to be long. Two honest sentences are enough:

“I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you, but I don’t see this going further. I didn’t want to just disappear on you. I wish you the best.”

That’s it. It takes about a minute to type. The research suggests a clear answer, even a disappointing one, is easier to live with than silence. And if the conversation ever felt unsafe, you do not owe anyone anything more than distance.

The Oldest Story About Hiding

There is something striking about this. Long before phones, one of the oldest stories people have ever told is about someone who went quiet and hid.

In that ancient story, the first man hides among the trees when God comes near. When asked why, his answer sounds like almost every ghoster since: “I was afraid, … and I hid myself.” Fear first. Then silence. Then hiding.

But the part that surprises people is what came next. God did not go silent in return. God did not block, unfollow or walk away. God came walking and asked a question: “Where art thou?” In the oldest version of this story, the one who was hidden from is the one who goes looking.

Whatever you believe, that is worth sitting with. If you were ghosted, it means your worth was never decided by someone else’s silence. And if you are the one hiding, it means the door has never been shut from the other side.

You Are Not a Ghost

Ghosting leaves you with no ending. So you get to write one. Not the worst-case version your mind hands you at 2am, but an honest one: someone was afraid, and they left quietly. That is sad. It is not a verdict on you.

And if you are on the other side of it, you can still be the person who says goodbye out loud. Two sentences. One minute. It is one of the kindest small things a person can do.

Discussion Question

Is it ever okay to ghost someone, or should everyone get at least a short goodbye? The person stops replying to messages and calls and may unfollow or block the other person online. Merriam-Webster added this meaning of “ghosting” to its dictionary in February 2017.

How common is ghosting?

Ghosting is common. In a 2019 study of 554 American adults published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 25.3% said a romantic partner had ghosted them and 21.7% said they had ghosted a romantic partner. Only 45.3% of those adults were familiar with the word “ghosting” at the time.

Is being ghosted worse than being rejected?

Research suggests being ghosted often feels worse than a direct rejection. A 2022 study by Pancani, Aureli and Riva found that people who were ghosted reported more negative emotions, stronger feelings of being excluded and less sense of control than people who were rejected directly, though the directly rejected people felt more anger toward their former partner.

Why do people ghost instead of saying goodbye?

Most people who ghost are avoiding an uncomfortable conversation rather than trying to cause pain. Other reasons include feeling unsafe after a bad interaction and believing a relationship was simply never “meant to be.” Studies also show people see ghosting as more acceptable for ending a friendship than a romantic relationship.

How do you move on after being ghosted?

Moving on after being ghosted starts with naming what happened and refusing to invent the worst possible reason for the silence. Sending one calm closing message and then stopping, talking to a trusted friend, and understanding your own attachment style can all help bring an ending to a relationship that stopped without one.
