Somewhere in Darwin, in the far north of Australia, there is a building full of rock.<\/p>\n\n

Long grey tubes of it, drilled out of the ground by mining companies looking for metal, then boxed up and stored by the Northern Territory Geological Survey. Most people would walk past those boxes without a second look.<\/p>\n\n

Inside them, scientists have now found the oldest complex life fossils<\/strong> known anywhere on Earth. More than 12,000 of them. The oldest are about 1.75 billion years old.<\/p>\n\n

And they only show up in one kind of place: where the water had oxygen in it.<\/p>\n\n

What Scientists Found in the Oldest Complex Life Fossils<\/h2>\n\n

The study was published in the journal Nature<\/em> under the title “Early fossil eukaryotes were benthic aerobes.” The authors are Maxwell Lechte, Leigh Anne Riedman, Susannah Porter, Galen Halverson and Margaret Whelan, with Riedman and Porter based at the University of California, Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n\n

That title sounds like a mouthful, so here it is in plain words.<\/p>\n\n

  • Eukaryotes<\/strong> are cells with a proper centre, a nucleus, and working parts inside. Every plant, every animal, every mushroom and every person is built from them. They are what scientists mean by “complex life.”<\/li>\n
  • Benthic<\/strong> means living on or in the seafloor, not floating up in the water.<\/li>\n
  • Aerobes<\/strong> are living things that need oxygen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    So the title is saying: the earliest complex cells lived on the sea bottom, and they needed air in the water.<\/p>\n\n

    The rocks came from the McArthur and Birrindudu basins in the Northern Territory. Between about 1.75 and 1.4 billion years ago, that land was under a shallow inland sea, with lagoons, mudflats and calm coastal water. The team dissolved small pieces of the old mud-rock and looked at what was left under a microscope. They also read the chemistry of the rock to work out how much oxygen the water held when that mud settled.<\/p>\n\n

    Here is the pattern they found. In rock that formed where the water had oxygen, there were complex cells. In rock that formed where the water had none, there were only simple cells, the kind with no nucleus, which scientists call prokaryotes.<\/p>\n\n

    “We found that the oldest eukaryotes that we’ve seen so far already needed oxygen in some capacity,” Riedman said.<\/p>\n\n

    That is worth sitting with for a second. There was very little oxygen around back then. Porter put the air at the time at “1% or less of modern levels.” Oxygen in the sea came in patches. And the complex cells were found in the patches.<\/p>\n\n
