Ask a man what he wants and you will get one of two answers. “Nothing, I’m good.” Or a very specific drill bit that costs less than the gas to go buy it.<\/p>\n\n

So you end up guessing. And if you want the gift to mean something about faith, the guessing gets harder. Most of what turns up when you search for Christian gifts men might like is a slogan on a mug, a verse on a keychain, or a leather Bible cover he will be polite about. You can feel it before you buy it: this is going to live in a drawer.<\/p>\n\n

There is a better place to start, and it is hiding in the last few lines of a letter most people skim past.<\/p>\n\n

The last wish list in the New Testament<\/h2>\n\n

Second Timothy is widely read as Paul’s final letter. He is in prison, in a chain, and he knows how this is likely to end. You would expect his closing lines to be grand. Instead, they read like a note left on the kitchen counter:<\/p>\n\n

“Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world… Only Luke is with me.” (2 Timothy 4:9-11, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

“The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.” (2 Timothy 4:13, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

“Do thy diligence to come before winter.” (2 Timothy 4:21, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

That is the list. Come see me. Bring my coat, because it is getting cold. Bring me something to read, and especially the parchments.<\/p>\n\n

Here is the part worth slowing down for. The most famous missionary in history, near the end, did not ask for a plaque about his legacy. He asked for three plain things: a person, some warmth, and words.<\/strong> That is still the best shopping list for a Christian man that anyone has written.<\/p>\n\n

And he says it again earlier in the same letter, about a friend named Onesiphorus: “he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain” (2 Timothy 1:16, KJV). Not a gift that impressed him. A friend who kept showing up and made the hard place feel a little less hard.<\/p>\n\n

You can run almost any gift idea through those three things. It takes about a minute.<\/p>\n\n

  1. Does it bring you closer?<\/strong> The first thing Paul asked for was a visit. The best gifts carry a bit of you with them: a note in your handwriting, a plan to do something together, a reason for him to call you. If the gift could have come from anyone, it will feel like it came from no one.<\/li>\n
  2. Does it make an ordinary hour warmer?<\/strong> The coat was not symbolic. It was cold in there. Think about the actual hours of his week: the 5 a.m. alarm, the drive, the garage, the late shift. What would make one of those hours better?<\/li>\n
  3. Does it hand him words?<\/strong> “Especially the parchments.” Paul wanted something to read. A lot of men carry more than they talk about, and many of them are not sure how to pray about it. A gift that gives him a few good words for the morning is worth more than one that makes a statement about him.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n
